Effect of Consulting on Microcredit Repayment in Korea

OH, YOONHAE Korea Development Institute 2015 KDI Journal of Economic Policy (KDI JEP) Vol.37 No.3

This study examines the effect of a one-on-one outsourced pre-lending consulting service on the repayment behavior of microcredit borrowers in Korea with administrative data from the Smile Microcredit Bank. A random change in the cut-off loan amount for mandatory consulting is utilized as an identification strategy. This three-day pre-lending business consulting service is effective in encouraging repayment behavior of existing businesses but it has no significant effect on start-up loans. The effectiveness of the consulting service in deterring delinquency with regard to existing loans is greater among male borrowers than among females.

Sales Compensation and Recommendations as the Fund of the Month

OH, YOONHAE Korea Development Institute 2019 KDI Journal of Economic Policy (KDI JEP) Vol.41 No.2

This study analyzes whether mutual fund distributors are more likely to recommend products with higher sales compensation to maximize their profit. The lists of the 'fund of the month' on their webpages are utilized from April of 2015 to August of 2015. A simple comparative analysis shows that the average sales fees and the average front-end load are significantly higher in the recommended funds among the A share class of domestic equity funds. The results of a regression analysis confirm that funds with high sales compensation levels are more likely to be recommended. This holds true for both domestic equity funds and hybrid bond funds even after controlling for fund age, fund size, and past returns.

      • Highly Angiogenic, Nonthrombogenic Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cell–Derived Spheroids in Intraportal Islet Transplantation

        Oh, Bae Jun,Jin, Sang-Man,Hwang, Yoonha,Choi, Jin Myung,Lee, Han-Sin,Kim, Gyuri,Kim, Geunsoo,Park, Hyo Jun,Kim, Pilhan,Kim, Sung Joo,Kim, Jae Hyeon American Diabetes Association 2018 Diabetes Vol.67 No.3

<P>Highly angiogenic bone marrow mononuclear cell-derived spheroids (BM-spheroids), formed by selective proliferation of the CD31(+) CD14(+) CD34(+) monocyte subset via three dimensional (3D) culture, have had robust angiogenetic capacity in rodent syngeneic renal subcapsular islet transplantation. We wondered whether the efficacy of BM-spheroids could be demonstrated in clinically relevant intraportal islet transplantation models without increasing the risk of portal thrombosis. The thrombogenic potential of intraportally infused BM-spheroids was compared with that of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and MSC-derived spheroids (MSC-spheroids). The angiogenic efficacy and persistence in portal sinusoids of BM-spheroids were examined in rodent syngeneic and primate allogeneic intraportal islet transplantation models. In contrast to MSCs and MSC-spheroids, intraportal infusion of BM-spheroids did not evoke portal thrombosis. BM-spheroids had robust angiogenetic capacity in both the rodent and primate intraportal islet transplantation models and improved post-transplant glycemic outcomes. MRI and intravital microscopy findings revealed the persistence of intraportally infused BM-spheroids in portal sinusoids. Intraportal cotransplantation of allogeneic islets with autologous BM-spheroids in nonhuman primates further confirmed the clinical feasibility of this approach. In conclusion, cotransplantation of BM-spheroids enhances intraportal islet transplantation outcome without portal thrombosis in mice and nonhuman primates. Generating BM-spheroids by 3D culture prevented the rapid migration and disappearance of intraportally infused therapeutic cells.</P>

Comparison of Initial Presentation of Pediatric Diabetes Before and During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic Era

        Lee Yoonha,Kim Minseung,Oh Kyeongeun,Kang Eungu,Rhie Young-Jun,Lee Jieun,Hong Yong Hee,Shin Young-Lim,Kim Jae Hyun 대한의학회 2022 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.37 No.22

Background: Hospital visitation has become challenging during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic because of quarantine measures and fear of infection. Consequently, newly diagnosed patients may present with more severe diseases during the pandemic. The present study analyzed the differences in the initial clinical presentations of newly diagnosed patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), comparing pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Methods: Newly diagnosed patients with T1D or T2D and aged < 18 years during 2018–2020 were included in the study. Data were collected retrospectively from four academic centers in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Initial clinical data were compared between the pre-pandemic (2018–2019) and pandemic (2020) periods. Results: In the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, 99 patients (41 T1D and 58 T2D patients) and 84 patients (51 T1D and 33 T2D patients) were identified, respectively. During the pandemic, the proportion of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) cases increased compared to the pre-pandemic period (21.2% during 2018–2019 vs. 38.1% in 2020; P = 0.012). In the prepandemic and pandemic periods, initial pH was 7.32 ± 0.14 and 7.27 ± 0.15, respectively (P = 0.040), and HbA1c values were 11.18 ± 2.46% and 12.42 ± 2.87%, respectively (P = 0.002). During the pandemic, there was an increased risk of DKA in patients with T1D (odds ratio, 2.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.04–5.62; P = 0.040). Conclusion: During the pandemic, the proportion of DKA in newly diagnosed patients with T1D increased and clinical parameters showed a deteriorating pattern. Increased awareness of pediatric diabetes, especially DKA, could facilitate visit to the hospital for an early diagnosis; thus, reducing the number of DKA cases during the pandemic era.

To evaluate the overall level of pollution in surface sediments of weir-constructed sections in the Geum River, samples were collected at nine sites four times during the period from 2015 to 2016 (a total of 36 samples). Particle size distribution, organic matter, nutrients, and heavy metals were analyzed. The surface sediments were composed mainly of sand, and the sediment types were S (sand), zS (silty sand), and sZ (sandy silt). The concentrations of IL, T-N, and T-P were lower than the values of the class IV sediment pollution evaluation level (National Institute of Environmental Research standards). The results showed that the research sites were not severely or apparently not polluted by organic matter and nutrients. The pollution assessment and ecological risk of heavy metals were evaluated using various geochemical assessment indices (Igeo, EF, mPELkQ, and PLI). Our results indicate that there was anthropogenic pollution in the study area, moderately polluted especially by Cd and Zn.

Combined Method of Neuronal Cell-Inducible Vector and Valproic Acid for Enhanced Gene Expression under Hypoxic Conditions

        윤여민,백다예,Dongsu Lee,Eunji Cheong,김장환,오진수,Yoonha Oh 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2020 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.17 No.1

BACKGROUND: Gene therapy shows the ability to restore neuronal dysfunction via therapeutic gene expression. The efficiency of gene expression and delivery to hypoxic injury sites is important for successful gene therapy. Therefore, we established a gene/stem cell therapy system using neuron-specific enolase promoter and induced neural stem cells in combination with valproic acid to increase therapeutic gene expression in hypoxic spinal cord injury. METHODS: To examine the effect of combined method on enhancing gene expression, we compared neuronal cellinducible luciferase levels under normoxia or hypoxia conditions in induced neural stem cells with valproic acid. Therapeutic gene, vascular endothelial growth factor, expression with combined method was investigated in hypoxic spinal cord injury model. We verified gene expression levels and the effect of different methods of valproic acid administration in vivo. RESULTS: The results showed that neuron-specific enolase promoter enhanced gene expression levels in induced neural stem cells compared to Simian Virus 40 promoter under hypoxic conditions. Valproic acid treatment showed higher gene expression of neuron-specific enolase promoter than without treatment. In addition, gene expression levels and cell viability were different depending on the various concentration of valproic acid. The gene expression levels were increased significantly when valproic acid was directly injected with induced neural stem cells in vivo. CONCLUSION: In this study, we demonstrated that the combination of neuron-specific enolase promoter and valproic acid induced gene overexpression in induced neural stem cells under hypoxic conditions and also in spinal cord injury depending on valproic acid administration in vivo. Combination of valproic acid and neuron-specific enolase promoter in induced neural stem cells could be an effective gene therapy system for hypoxic spinal cord injury.
