The College of Engineering was specialized to have a sole function for supplying technical high school teachers in 1977 and referred to as the College of Industrial Education according to the Government's policy. The economic impact mainly due to the oil-crises caused a severe problem to this college, namely discrepancy of supply to demand scale. Accordingly the number of student enrollment was to be fluctuated from 479 in 1979 through 800 in 1979 and 900 in 1980 to 430 in 1981. And the engineering departments have been attached to this Engineering Education College since 1981. These circumstanses met singnificant inefficiency in facility operation. This program aims at providing an overall relocation of the college facilities and preparing the practical system to make the joint-operation possible taking into account circulation, academic stream, budget, maintenance, etc. However this study could not get optimal spacing but some trade-off, considering the current situation.

Phytochemicals are reported to provide various biological functions leading to the promotion of health as well as the reduced risk of chronic diseases. Fat-soluble plant pigments, carotenoids, are extensively studied micronutrient phytochemicals for their potential health benefits. It is noteworthy that specific carotenoids may be responsible for different protective effects against certain diseases. In addition, each carotenoid can be obtained from different types of plant foods. Considering the fact that the phytochemical content in foods can vary according to, but not limited to, the varieties and culture conditions, it is important to establish a database of phytochemicals in locally produced plant foods. Currently, information on individual carotenoid content in plant foods commonly consumed in Korea is lacking. As the first step to support the production and consumption of sustainable local plant foods, carotenoids and total phenolic contents of plant foods commonly consumed in Korea are presented and their potential biological functions are discussed in this review.

Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is the most common congenital tumor of the newborn. Antenatal diagnosis of SCT is usually possible by ultrasound during the second or even earlier in the first trimester. It requires close fetal surveillance due to associated significant prenatal mortality such as fetal hydrops and high-output heart failure. Complete excision of the tumor is the mainstay of treatment and chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be conducted as adjuvant in malignant cases. Long-term follow-up is essential for assessment of recurrence and functional problems. We report a case of huge sacrococcygeal immature teratoma diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound, which successfully underwent postnatal complete excision of tumor after cesarean section. Clinical considerations are discussed.

The rapid recruitment of osteoblasts in bone defects is an essential prerequisite for efficient bone repair. Conventionally, osteoblast recruitment to bone defects and subsequent bone repair has been achieved using growth factors. Here, we present a methodology that can guide the recruitment of osteoblasts to bone defects with topographically defined implants (TIs) for efficient in vivo bone repair. We compared circular TIs that had microgrooves in parallel or radial arrangements with nonpatterned implants for osteoblast migration and in vivo bone formation. In vitro, the microgrooves in the TIs enhanced both the migration and proliferation of osteoblasts. Especially, the microgrooves with radial arrangement demonstrated a much higher efficiency of osteoblast recruitment to the implants than did the other types of implants, which may be due to the efficient guidance of cell migration toward the cell-free area of the implants. The expression of the intracellular signaling molecules responsible for the cell migration was also upregulated in osteoblasts on the microgrooved TIs. In vivo, the TI with radially defined topography demonstrated much greater bone repair in mouse calvarial defect models than in the other types of implants. Taken together, these results indicate that implants with physical guidance can enhance tissue repair by rapid cell recruitment.

Color tuning and switching of the solid-state luminescence of organic materials are attractive subjects for both the fundamental research and practical applications such as optical recording. We report herein cyanostilbene-based highly luminescent molecular sheets which exhibit two-color fluorescence switching in response to pressure, temperature, and solvent vapor. The origin for the multistimuli luminescence switching is the two-directional shear-sliding capability of molecular sheets, which are formed via intermolecular multiple C−H···N and C−H···O hydrogen bonds. The resulting two distinctive crystal phases are promoted by different modes of local dipole coupling, which cause a substantial alternation of π−π overlap. These changes can be directly correlated with the subsequent intermolecular excitonic and excimeric coupling in both phases, as demonstrated by an in-depth theory-assisted spectroscopic and structural study. Finally, we have prepared a first device demonstrator for rewritable fluorescent optical recording media which showed multistimuli luminescence tuning with fast response. Our multistimuli responsive system is unique in terms of the slip-stacking of molecular sheets and thus provides a novel concept of rewritable fluorescent optical recording media.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Because of the well-established screening program, cervical cancer is now being diagnosed in women at relatively young age and early stages. The conventional treatments for early-stage cervical cancer are abdominal radical hysterectomy (with/without salpingo-oophorectomy) or chemoradiation, which lead to definitive sterility in cases of removing both ovaries and sole radiotherapy. However, for young patients with early-stage cervical cancer who desire a fertility preservation, trachelectomy could be an alternative option. Here, we report a successful twin pregnancy by assisted reproductive technique after Laparoscopy-Assisted Radical Vaginal Trachelectomy (LARVT) to a patient with an early-stage cervical cancer. A 34-year-old nulliparous woman was diagnosed with cervical cancer IB1. She underwent LARVT with permanent transvaginal cerclage without any adjuvant treatment. Two years later, she had a twin pregnancy by a controlled ovarian hyperstimulation with an intrauterine insemination. Transvaginal ultrasonography which followed up serially showed a shortening of cervical length. Therefore, she was hospitalized at 22 5/7 weeks. She was treated with steroid for fetal lung maturation and intermittent tocolytics due to the possibility of preterm labor. At 30th weeks of gestation, she delivered a twin by emergent cesarean section due to an uncontrolled preterm labor. Both babies were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for two months, and were discharged without any medical problem. LARVT may be a promising surgical option for treatments of young patients with an early-stage invasive cervical carcinoma, who desire a fertility preservation.
