        Assessing Neurobehavioral Alterations Among E-waste Recycling Workers in Hong Kong

        Background E-waste workers in Hong Kong are handling an unprecedented amount of e-waste, which contains various neurotoxic chemicals. However, no study has been conducted to evaluate the neurological health status of e-waste workers in Hong Kong. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of neurobehavioral alterations and to identify the vulnerable groups among Hong Kong e-waste workers. Methods We recruited 109 Hong Kong e-waste workers from June 2021 to September 2022. Participants completed standard questionnaires and wore a GENEActiv accelerometer for seven days. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Questionnaire 16/18 (Q16/18) were used to assess subjective neurobehavioral alterations. The GENEActiv data generated objective sleep and circadian rhythm variables. Workers were grouped based on job designation and entity type according to the presumed hazardous level. Unconditional logistic regression models measured the associations of occupational characteristics with neurobehavioral alterations after adjusting for confounders. Results While dismantlers/repairers and the workers in entities not funded by the government were more likely to suffer from neurotoxic symptoms in Q18 (adjusted odds ratio: 3.18 [1.18–9.39] and 2.77 [1.10–7.46], respectively), the workers from self-sustained recycling facilities also have poor performances in circadian rhythm. Results also showed that the dismantlers/repairers working in entities not funded by the government had the highest risk of neurotoxic symptoms compared to the lowest-risk group (i.e., workers in government-funded companies with other job designations). Conclusion This timely and valuable study emphasizes the importance of improving the working conditions for high-risk e-waste workers, especially the dismantlers or repairers working in facilities not funded by the government.         GLOBULAR AND OPEN CLUSTERS OBSERVED BY SDSS/SEGUE: THE GIANT STARS

        <P>We present griz observations for the clusters M92, M13 and NGC 6791 and gr photometry for M71, Be 29 and NGC 7789. In addition we present new membership identifications for all these clusters, which have been observed spectroscopically as calibrators for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)/SEGUE survey; this paper focuses in particular on the red giant branch stars in the clusters. In a number of cases, these giants were too bright to be observed in the normal SDSS survey operations, and we describe the procedure used to obtain spectra for these stars. For M71, we also present a new variable reddening map and a new fiducial for the gr giant branch. For NGC 7789, we derived a transformation from T-eff to g-r for giants of near solar abundance, using IRFM T-eff measures of stars with good ugriz. and 2MASS photometry and SEGUE spectra. The result of our analysis is a robust list of known cluster members with correctly dereddened and (if needed) transformed gr photometry for crucial calibration efforts for SDSS and SEGUE.</P>

      • FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE DISK SYSTEM OF THE MILKY WAY: [α/Fe] RATIOS AND KINEMATICS OF THE SEGUE G-DWARF SAMPLE

        <P>We employ measurements of the [alpha/Fe] ratio derived from low-resolution (R similar to 2000) spectra of 17,277 G-type dwarfs from the SEGUE survey to separate them into likely thin-and thick-disk subsamples. Both subsamples exhibit strong gradients of orbital rotational velocity with metallicity, of opposite signs, -20 to -30 km s(-1) dex(-1) for the thin-disk and + 40 to + 50 km s(-1) dex(-1) for the thick-disk population. The rotational velocity is uncorrelated with Galactocentric distance for the thin-disk subsample and exhibits a small trend for the thick-disk subsample. The rotational velocity decreases with distance from the plane for both disk components, with similar slopes (-9.0 +/- 1.0 km s(-1) kpc(-1)). Thick-disk stars exhibit a strong trend of orbital eccentricity with metallicity (about -0.2 dex(-1)), while the eccentricity does not change with metallicity for the thin-disk subsample. The eccentricity is almost independent of Galactocentric radius for the thin-disk population, while a marginal gradient of the eccentricity with radius exists for the thick-disk population. Both subsamples possess similar positive gradients of eccentricity with distance from the Galactic plane. The shapes of the eccentricity distributions for the thin-and thick-disk populations are independent of distance from the plane, and include no significant numbers of stars with eccentricity above 0.6. Among several contemporary models of disk evolution that we consider, radial migration appears to have played an important role in the evolution of the thin-disk population, but possibly less so for the thick disk, relative to the gas-rich merger or disk heating scenarios. We emphasize that more physically realistic models and simulations need to be constructed in order to carry out the detailed quantitative comparisons that our new data enable.</P>

      • A Feasibility Research on the Mechanism of Cold Chain Business in Deppon Logistics

        Cold chain distribution is always well-known as the “Mount Everest” in international logistics industry, while the rapid development in recent years of domestic meat, frozen food, cold drinks industry and dairy industry brought a leapfrog growth of cold chain logistics, which respectively stimulated the need for logistics outsourcing service from Third Party Logistics. Those companies demanding for exploiting cold chain business on one hand requires a complete set of refrigerated logistics chains, on the other hand also requires enterprises to establish a good and professional transport system with refrigerated operation equipment, which are precisely the weakness of manufacturing enterprises. Thus, outsourcing of cold chain logistics to a third party is the best choice for companies to focus on its core business. By analyzing the bulletins of International Cold Chain Logistics Summits, this paper shows the problems of cold chain industry in China and points out the potentials for its future development. It further analyzes the feasibility of launching cold chain business of Deppon Logistics. The purpose is to offer some suggestions to work out the barriers and set up a modern operation system under the big data age in Deppon.

        Liberal democracy, market economy, and international conduct as standards of ‘civilization’ in contemporary international society: The case of Russia's entry into the ‘community of civilized states’

        In his report to the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation in the beginning of 1992, President Boris Yeltsin stated that one of the fundamental principles of his foreign policy was the integration of Russia into the ‘community of civilized states’. However, joining a society or community of some kind requires the fulfilment of certain standards. The first global application of international norms and expected standards of behaviour took place during the nineteenth century through the process of the expansion of the European society of states and its gradual transformation to the contemporary global international society. In this process, the standard of ‘civilization’ played an essential role in determining which states would join the expanding European society and which ones would not. Despite its official repudiation, the standard of ‘civilization’ has remained an international practice as well as a benchmark against which the attitudes and policies of states are assessed. This paper examines the changes that the Russian Government under President Yeltsin had to introduce in order to achieve the country's admission into post-Cold War international society. It argues that these changes included the democratization of the Russian political system, the transformation of the Russian economic system into a free market economy, and the de-ideologisation of the Russian foreign policy.

        3D-quantitative structure–activity relationship and antiviral effects of curcumin derivatives as potent inhibitors of infl uenza H1N1 neuraminidase

        Curcumin derivatives have been shown to inhibitreplication of human infl uenza A viruses (IAVs). However, itis not clear whether curcumin and its derivatives can inhibitneuraminidase (NA) of influenza virus. In this study, ameaningful 3D quantitative structure–activity relationshipmodel (comparative molecular fi eld analysis R 2 = 0.997,q 2 = 0.527, s = 0.064, F = 282.663) was built to understandthe chemical–biological interactions between their activitiesand neuraminidase. Molecular docking was used to predictbinding models between curcumin derivatives and neuraminidase. Real-time polymerase chain reactions showed thatthe fi ve active curcumin derivatives might have direct eff ectson viral particle infectivity in H1N1-infected lung epithelial(MDCK) cells. Neuraminidase activation assay showed thatfi ve active curcumin derivatives decreased H1N1-inducedneuraminidase activation in MDCK cells. Indirect immunofluorescence assay indicated that two active curcuminderivatives (tetramethylcurcumin and curcumin) down-regulatedthe nucleoprotein expression. Curcumin inhibited IAVin vivo. The therapeutic mechanism of curcumin in the treatmentof infl uenza viral pneumonia is related to improvingthe immune function of infected mice and regulating secretionof tumor necrosis-α, interleukin-6, and interferon-γ. These results indicate that curcumin derivatives inhibit IAVby blocking neuraminidase in the cellular model and curcuminalso has anti-IAV activity in the animal model.

This paper introduces the concept of prosocial behavior and social adaptability and the relationship between them, summarizes the influencing factors of children’s and adolescents’ prosocial behavior and how to cultivate children’s and adolescents’ prosocial behavior from the perspective of social adaptability. It is hoped to provide suggestions for the development and cultivation of prosocial behavior of children and adolescents.
