We estimate the economic benefit of weather modification (precipitation enhancement and fog dissipation) by assuming its operation for the considered regions. Based on the statistical data, the economic benefit of the virtually operational precipitation enhancement experiments for the Andong and Imha basins, where the natural precipitation is relatively lack in South Korea, is calculated 348 for the water resources, 22,458 for forest fire prevention, and 28,458 million won/year for the drought relief. The benefit of the fog dissipation operation for the Incheon International Airport is estimated 7,365 million won/year for the flight delay due to fog. The calculated ratio of benefit to cost for precipitation enhancement operation for the basins is 14.07, which is comparable to that conducted in other countries.

Purpose: The prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide and was recently reported to be up to 13.7% in general population in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of CKD in subjects undergoing coronary angiography (CAG). Methods: Six hundred six subjects who underwent CAG in Korea University Anam Hospital during the time frame of 4 months were included and prevalence of CKD was estimated by using K/DOQI guideline with MDRD equation. Coronary artery disease was defined as one or more significant stenosis (50% or more) at CAG. Results: The prevalence of CKD was 36.4%. The proportion of hypertension and diabetes, the well- known risk factors of CKD were not different with general population. The prevalence of coronary artery disease was not different between two groups with or without CKD. Conclusion: The prevalence of CKD in subjects who undergo CAG is higher than that in general population (36.4% vs. 13.7%). It seems to be related with or other factors than hypertension and diabetes. Subsequently, using contrast media to this population might carry a higher risk of developing contrast induced acute kidney injury. More attention to assessing kidney function before CAG in this population is needed.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine whether gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist treatment is effective in preserving final height in patients with central precocious puberty (CPP) or early puberty (EP).Methods: The medical records of 40 patients with CPP and 206 patients with EP who completed GnRH agonist treatment following diagnosis were analyzed retrospectively. Height and height standard deviation (height SDS) scores based on bone age (BA) were measured and calculated at baseline, after treatment completion, and at final follow-up to compare changes within and between groups. Predicted adult height (PAH) was estimated by the height corresponding to height SDS for BA in girls at 18 years 11 months of age based on the growth chart.Results: PAH at baseline did not differ significantly between the CPP group (153.67±4.95) and the EP group (154.77±3.72). In the CPP group, PAH significantly increased at treatment completion (156.01±4.61) and at final follow-up (158.52±6.04) compared to baseline. In the EP group, PAH significantly increased at treatment completion (157.7±3.60) and at final follow-up (159.31±4.26) compared to baseline. The increase in PAH at all timepoints compared to baseline did not significantly differ between the CPP and EP groups.Conclusion: Both CPP and EP groups had significantly greater PAH after treatment, with no difference in the amount of increase between groups. These results show that GnRH agonist treatment can help increase final height even in patients diagnosed with EP after the age of 8 years.

<P>In tissue engineering and wound-healing applications, dermal substitutes are used to provide fibroblasts with the mechanical support for their growth and then to facilitate the skin formation. In this study, three-dimensional porous poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) 65/35 scaffolds were prepared and then the composites of the scaffolds and human fetal dermal fibroblasts were fabricated as a tissue-engineered dermal substitute. The function and tissue compatibility of the artificial dermal substitute were evaluated at the levels of gene expression (by RT-PCR) and protein expression (total collagen quantities), as well as by histological and immunohistochemical analysis. The PCR products indicated that the mRNA of type-I collagen, mainly secreted by the fibroblasts onto the PLGA scaffolds, was clearly expressed after 4 weeks. The amount of total collagen synthesized from the cells was shown to increase gradually during the initial culture period and slightly decreased afterwards. After 8 weeks of culture, the fibroblasts were well attached and migrated entirely throughout the pores of the PLGA scaffold with normal function. Furthermore, the positively stained type-I collagen was intensively detected throughout the pores. These results suggest that the function and tissue compatibility may be important criteria in evaluating an artificial tissue-engineered skin.</P>
Study on Cd/Pb resistance and accumulation by AtHMA3 overexpressing plants

AtHMA3 is one of P1B-ATPase of Arabidopsis thaliana which transports and/or stores Cd and Pb in the plant cell. To test whether AtHMA3 can be used to develop enhanced resistance plant to Cd and Pb for phytoremediation, we overexpressed AtHMA3 in Columbia-0 using a pBI121vector containing the 35S promoter. To evaluate their Cd and Pb resistance, seeds of three different T3 homozygous(HMA3-1~3) and wild type plants(col-0) were germinated and grown on agar plates containing 50μM Cd, 500μM Pb and 50μM Cd+ 500μM Pb for 3 weeks. 35S::AtHMA3 grew better than wild type plants about 1.1-to 1.8-fold in Cd or Pb containg mediums. Fresh weights of all three lines of transgenic plants were 1.2-to 1.5-fold higher than those of wild type plants in Cd or Pb-containing medium. In addition to, we measured Cd and Pb content in both wild type and transgenic plants grown in solution with 50μM Cd, 500μM Pb and 50μM Cd+ 500μM Pb for 6 d. AtHMA3-overexpressing plants had consistently higher Cd and Pb contents than wild type plants. Chlorophyll contents were not significant difference between overlines and wild-types. These results show that HMA3 contributes to Cd and Pb resistance, and it might be useful for the phytoremediation.

<P>Compelling evidence from preclinical and clinical studies has shown that mild hypothermia is neuroprotective against ischemic stroke. We investigated the neuroprotective effect of post-risperidone (RIS) treatment against transient ischemic injury and its mechanisms in the gerbil brain. Transient ischemia (TI) was induced in the telencephalon by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) for 5 min under normothermic condition (37 ± 0.2 °C). Treatment of RIS induced hypothermia until 12 h after TI in the TI-induced animals under uncontrolled body temperature (UBT) compared to that under controlled body temperature (CBT) (about 37 °C). Neuroprotective effect was statistically significant when we used 5 and 10 mg/kg doses (p < 0.05, respectively). In the RIS-treated TI group, many CA1 pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus survived under UBT compared to those under CBT. In this group under UBT, post-treatment with RIS to TI-induced animals markedly attenuated the activation of glial cells, an increase of oxidative stress markers [dihydroethidium, 8-hydroxy-2′ -deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and 4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE)], and a decrease of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) in their CA1 pyramidal neurons. Furthermore, RIS-induced hypothermia was significantly interrupted by NBOH-2C-CN hydrochloride (a selective 5-HT2A receptor agonist), but not bromocriptine mesylate (a D2 receptor agonist). Our findings indicate that RIS-induced hypothermia can effectively protect neuronal cell death from TI injury through attenuation of glial activation and maintenance of antioxidants, showing that 5-HT2A receptor is involved in RIS-induced hypothermia. Therefore, RIS could be introduced to reduce body temperature rapidly and might be applied to patients for hypothermic therapy following ischemic stroke.</P>

Background: Controversy exists about the optimal treatment of midshaft clavicle fractures in the presence of significant displacement, comminution, or shortening of the fracture in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of 4 different treatments for midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents: conservative treatment with a figure-of-8 (FO8) brace, open reduction and internal fixation with a plate (OPL), minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), and intramedullary nail fixation with a threaded Steinmann pin (TSP). Methods: A total of 94 teenagers with midshaft clavicle fractures were divided into the FO8, OPL, MIPO, and TSP groups (n = 24, 33, 16, and 21, respectively). We analyzed clinical and radiological outcomes and complications in each group and compared the results among the groups. Results: All groups showed satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes, but each group showed different results for the assessment items. The Constant-Murley scores were higher in the operated groups than in the FO8 group. Recovery of joint motion was faster in the operated groups. The TSP group had the highest cosmetic satisfaction with respect to the satisfaction score and measured scar length. Fracture union was achieved in all patients. At the final follow-up, the bone length was closer to normal in the OPL and TSP groups than in the FO8 and MIPO groups, and angulation was less in the OPL and TSP groups than in the MIPO and FO8 groups. The TSP and MIPO groups obtained faster bone healing than the OPL and FO8 groups. In the operated groups, 9 patients had metal-induced irritating symptoms; 1, supraclavicular nerve injury symptoms; and 4, refractures after plate removal. Conclusions: The nonoperatively treated group had no iatrogenic complications. The operated groups complained of various disadvantages induced by surgery; however, these groups achieved faster functional recovery and slightly better radiological and functional results than the nonoperative group.

Hypolipidemic effect of exo-polymers (EPs) from submerged mycelial culture of Cordyceps militaris was investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats. For a dosedependent study, EPs were administered at the level of 50-100㎎/㎏ body weight (BW) and the data was compared with the saline administered control group. A significant reduction of both the plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) was registered under the influence of EPs. It reduced the low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level as much as 40.5%. Levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol did not vary significantly within the different experimental groups, but the HDL: TC ratio showed consistently a high value with the increasing dose. The effects of cultural conditions (pH and temperature) in mycelial growth and EPs production were studied. Both the biomass and EPs were produced in a wide range of pH and temperature.
