Effect of Renal Insufficiency on Stone Recurrence in Patients with Urolithiasis

Kang, Ho Won,Seo, Sung Phil,Kim, Won Tae,Kim, Yong-June,Yun, Seok-Joong,Lee, Sang-Cheol,Kim, Wun-Jae The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences 2014 JOURNAL OF KOREAN MEDICAL SCIENCE Vol.29 No.8

<P>The study was designed to assess the relationship between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urinary stone-forming constituents, and to assess the effect of renal insufficiency on stone recurrence risk in first stone formers (SF). Baseline serum creatinine levels were obtained, and renal insufficiency was defined as creatinine clearance ≤60 mL/min (Cockroft-Gault). This retrospective case-control study consists of 342 first SF; 171 SF with normal renal function were selected with 1:1 propensity scores matched to 171 SF with renal insufficiency. Urinary metabolic evaluation was compared to renal function. GFR was positively correlated with urinary calcium, uric acid, and citrate excretion. Subjects with renal insufficiency had significantly lower urinary calcium, uric acid, and citrate excretion than those with normal renal function, but not urine volume. With regard to urinary metabolic abnormalities, similar results were obtained. SF with renal insufficiency had lower calcium oxalate supersaturation indexes and stone recurrence rates than SF with normal renal function. Kaplan-Meier curves showed similar results. In conclusion, GFR correlates positively with urinary excretion of stone-forming constituents in SF. This finding implies that renal insufficiency is not a risk factor for stone recurrence.</P><P><B>Graphical Abstract</B></P><P/>

Evaluation of Salivary Gland Dysfunction Using Salivary Gland Scintigraphy in Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's Syndrome Patients and in Thyroid Cancer Patients after Radioactive Iodine Therapy

        Kang, Ji-Yeon,Jang, Su-Jin,Lee, Won-Woo,Jang, Sung-June,Lee, Yun-Jong,Kim, Sang-Eun The Korea Society of Nuclear Medicine 2011 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.45 No.3

Purpose Salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) provides an objective means of diagnosing salivary gland dysfunction in Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's syndrome (SS) patients and in thyroid cancer patients after radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. In the present study, SGS was performed in SS patients and in thyroid cancer patients post-RAI, and scintigraphic parameters were compared. Methods Twenty-eight SS patients (males:females=1:27, age $53.3{\pm}11.9$ years), 28 controls (males:females=3:25, age $54.1{\pm}10.1$ years), and 92 thyroid cancer patients (males:females=28:64, age $46.2{\pm}12.9$) who had undergone a session of high-dose RAI therapy (mean dose, $5.2{\pm}1.5$ GBq) were included. SGS was performed using Tc-99m pertechnetate (925 MBq). Scintigraphic parameters (parotid uptake ratio PU, submandibular uptake ratio SU, percentage parotid excretion %PE, and percentage submandibular excretion %SE) were measured and compared for SS, thyroid cancer post-RAI, and control patients. Results PU, SU, %SE, and %PE were all significantly lower in SS than in post-RAI thyroid cancer or control patients (p<0.05), whereas only %PE was significantly lower in post-RAI thyroid cancer patients than in controls (p<0.05). SU and %SE were found to be correlated with the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate. Conclusion Scintigraphic parameters derived from SGS can play a crucial role in the detection of salivary gland dysfunction in SS patients and in post-RAI thyroid cancer patients.

      • Lipopolysaccharide-Preconditioned Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells Induce M1 Polarization of Macrophages through Extracellular Vesicles

        Kang, Hyejong,Lee, Myung-Ju,Park, Sang June,Lee, Myung-Shin MDPI 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.19 No.12

<P>Periodontitis is a common disease characterized by chronic inflammation and tissue destruction of gums. Human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), derived from the periodontium, have stem cell properties similar to those of mesenchymal stem cells. PDLSCs possess not only the potential to differentiate into other tissues, but also immunomodulatory abilities. Macrophages play a critical role in periodontal disease, but little is known regarding the role of PDLSCs in macrophage modulation during inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of PDLSCs on the macrophage cell line. While the conditioned media from PDLSCs under normal culture conditions did not affect macrophage polarization, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-preconditioned PDLSCs induced significant changes in M1 polarization. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from the conditioned media of LPS-preconditioned PDLSCs induced strong M1 polarization of macrophages. Additionally, the M1 polarization was abolished by DNase I treatment of EVs. Therefore, the LPS-stimulated PDLSCs induce M1 polarization of macrophages through EVs, suggesting that the EVs from PDLSCs might be a potential therapeutic target for inflammation in the periodontium.</P>

Improvement of Contour Fringes by using Addition of Incremental Images

Kang, Young-June,Ryu, Weon-Jae,Park, Sang-Kyu Korean Society for Precision Engineering 2002 International Journal of the Korean Society of Pre Vol.3 No.3

Electronic speckle contouring(ESC) based on electronic speckle pattern interferometry is the optical method for measuring object shape by using fringe-projection techniques. This method has the advantages of being non-contact, non-destructive and a whole-field measurement of the surface under investigation. Fringes in ESC represent the difference in depth along the view direction between the master wavefront and the test component. The contour maps of three-dimensional diffuse objects can be obtained by small shifts of optical fiber carrying the dual-object-beams and 4-frame phase shifting. In this study we proposed the contouring method by shifting the collimated illumination beams through optical fiber in order to obtain the contour fringe patterns. And also, we performed the addition of incremental images through the geometrical analysis to obtain the contour fringe interval when we performed the incremental addition of images and experiments based on this method. We obtained both quantitative increment without decorrelation effect and qualitative improvement by reducing the noise of contour fringes.

      • A Cytogenetic Study of Korean Native Goat Bred in the Nuclear Power Plant using the Micronucleus Assay

KANG, Chang Mo,LEE, Hae June,JI, Young Hoon,KIM, Tae Hwan,RYU, Si Yun,KIM, Se Ra,JO, Sung Kee,KIM, Jong Choon,KIM, Sung Ho Journal of Radiation Research Editorial Committee 2005 Journal of radiation research Vol.46 No.2

<P>Cytogenetic and hematological analysis was performed on the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) obtained from Korean native goats bred in two nuclear power plants (Wolsong and Uljin) and a control area. The frequencies of gamma-ray-induced micronuclei (MN) in the cytokinesis-blocked (CB) lymphocytes at several doses were measured in three Korean native goats. The measurements performed after irradiation showed dose-related increases in the MN frequency in each of the donors. The results were analyzed using a linear-quadratic model with a line of best fit of y = 0.1019D + 0.0045D2 + 0.0093 (y = number of MN/CB cells and D = irradiation dose in Gy). The MN rates in the goats from the Wolsong and Uljin nuclear power plant, and the control area were 9.60 ± 2.88, 6.83 ± 1.47 and 9.88 ± 4.32 per 1,000 CB lymphocytes, respectively. The apparent difference is not statistically significant. The MN frequencies of PBLs from goats bred in three areas means that the values are within the background variation in this experiment. The MN frequencies and hematological values were similar regardless of whether the goats were bred in the nuclear power plant or the control area.</P>

Pinitol from Soybeans Reduces Postprandial Blood Glucose in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

        Kang, Min-Jung,Kim, Jung-In,Yoon, Sang-Yeon,Kim, Jae Cherl,Cha, In-June Mary Ann Liebert 2006 Journal of medicinal food Vol.9 No.2

<P>The effect of 3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol (D-pinitol), purified from soybean, on the postprandial blood glucose response in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was examined. Fifteen Korean subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (seven men, eight women; 60.3 +/- 3.1 years old) ingested cooked white rice containing 50 g of available carbohydrate with or without prior ingestion of soy pinitol. Pinitol was given either as a 1.2 g dose at 0, 60, 120, or 180 minutes prior to rice ingestion, or as a 0.6 g dose at 60 minutes prior to rice ingestion. Capillary blood glucose levels were monitored for 4 hours after rice consumption. The ingestion of 1.2 g of pinitol 60 minutes prior to rice consumption controlled postprandial capillary blood glucose most effectively, significantly diminishing the postprandial increase in plasma glucose levels measured at 90 and 120 minutes after rice consumption (P < .05). The incremental area under the plasma glucose response curve for subjects who consumed both pinitol and rice was significantly lower than that for subjects who consumed only rice (P < .05), but pinitol had no apparent effect on postprandial insulin levels. Therefore, soybean-derived pinitol may be useful in controlling postprandial increases in blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes.</P>

      • Azabang, a Gudle Structure of Korea

June Bong Kim,Lee Kang Man,Uoo Sang Yoo,Kim Jong Hun 국제온돌학회 2008 International Journal of Ondol Vol.3 No.1

This study is Korean traditional heating system, named 'AZABANG'. Ondol characterized by" Azabang "is dated back to 119 AD and it has approximately 2000 years history. Among various kinds of traditional radiant floor heating system, Ondol is the most reasonable and scientific one. This type of imaginative Ondol which have superior ability to keep temperature during a long period, roughly I 00 days could be attributable to the special structural pattern . The Ondol characterized by ''Azabang" represents extraordinary creativeness originated from Korean traditional culture and at the same time, it is the significant evidence that those missing historical rings, in some degree, have been connected. Therefore we well do our best to apply the scientific and reasonable concept into the real world.

Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer and Physical Properties of 7-Hydroxyquinoline

        Kang Wee-Kyeong,Cho Sung-June,Lee Minyung,Kim Dong-Ho,Ryoo Ryong,Jung Kyung-Hoon,Jang Du-Jeon Korean Chemical Society 1992 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.13 No.2

The excited state intramolecular proton transfer and physical properties of 7-hydroxyquinoline are studied in various solutions and heterogeneous systems by measuring steady state and time-resolved fluorescence, reflection and NMR spectra. Proton transfer is observed only in protic solvents owing to its requirement of hydrogen-bonded solvent bridge for proton relay transfer. The activation energies of the proton transfer are 2.3 and 5.4 kJ/mol in $CH_3OH$ and in $CH_3OD$, respectively. Dimers of normal molecules are stable in microcrystalline powder form and undergo an extremely fast concerted double proton transfer upon absorption of a photon, consequently forming dimers of tautomer molecules. In the supercage of zeolite NaY, its tautomeric form is stable in the ground state and does not show any proton transfer.

Identification of False Rotor Fault Indications Produced by Online MCSA for Medium-Voltage Induction Machines

        Sang Bin Lee,Doosoo Hyun,Tae-june Kang,Chanseung Yang,Sungsik Shin,Heonyoung Kim,Sungbong Park,Tae-Sik Kong,Hee-Dong Kim IEEE 2016 IEEE transactions on industry applications Vol.52 No.1

<P>Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) has become an essential part of the preventive maintenance program for monitoring the condition of the rotor cage in medium-voltage induction motors in the pulp and paper industry. However, many cases of false indications due to interference from the motor or the load have been reported. False indications can result in unnecessary inspection and outage costs (false positives) or major repair/replacement costs and loss of production (false negatives). The objective of this paper is to present the potential root causes of false indications and provide guidelines on how commercially available offline and online tests can be applied for identifying false indications from a field engineers' perspective. Case studies of false MCSA indications and results of alternative commercial tests for improving the reliability of the diagnosis are provided through measurements on 6.6-kV and laboratory motor samples. Finally, new test methods under research and development for reliable rotor fault detection are summarized, and unresolved problems are listed. This paper is expected to help field maintenance engineers prevent unnecessary motor inspection and forced outages and guide researchers target future research toward industrial needs.</P>
