A method for the alternating current polarographic determination of cadmium in commercial tooth brush case was established. Tooth brush case can be determined polarographically after dessolving the sample in ethyl acetoacetate(EAA) and methyl alcohol(MA). Calibrating solutions can be prepared by dissolving commercial methllic cadmium of sp grade(99.0%)in EAA-MA. The alternating current polarogram in region of applied potential from-0.2 to -1.2 volt vs. SCE sfter bubbling for 20 min. with nitrogen is recorded, and cadmium is determined by referring to a calibration curve. The method is rapid and has accuracy when compared with those obtained by the conventional ashing method.

<▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text.</P></▼1><▼2><P>Opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore and Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> overload are main contributors to myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury, which paradoxically causes a wide variety of myocardial damage. We investigated the protective role of a novel necrosis inhibitor (NecroX-7; NecX) against myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury using in vitro and in vivo models. H9C2 rat cardiomyoblasts and neonatal cardiomyocytes were exposed to hypoxia–reoxygenation stress after pre-treatment with NecX, vitamin C, a combination of vitamin C and E, N-acetylcysteine, an apoptosis inhibitor (Z-VAD-fmk), or cyclosporine A. The main mechanism of cell death after hypoxia–reoxygenation stress was not apoptosis but necrosis, which was prevented by NecX. Protective effect of NecX was based on its potent reactive oxygen species scavenging activity, especially on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. NecX preserved mitochondrial membrane potential through prevention of Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> influx and inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, which was more potent than that by cyclosporine A. Using Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to myocardial ischemia for 45 minutes followed by reperfusion, we compared therapeutic efficacies of NecX with cyclosporine A, vitamin C, a combination of vitamin C and E, and 5% dextrose, each administered 5 minutes before reperfusion. NecX markedly inhibited myocardial necrosis and reduced fibrotic area to a greater extent than did cyclosporine A and other treated groups. In addition, NecX preserved systolic function and prevented pathological dilatory remodeling of left ventricle. The novel necrosis inhibitor has a significant protective effect against myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury through inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, indicating that it is a promising candidate for cardioprotective adjunctive measure on top of reperfusion therapy.</P></▼2>
The monitoring of heavy metals(Lead and cadmium) in honeys consumed in Incheon region

This study was conducted to investigate the contents of lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd) in honeys(n=60) from April to May in 2004 and to provide the scientific basis for heavy metal regulations of Korea Food Code. The samples were digested with acids, then analyzed for the contents of Pb and Cd by an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer(ICP). The contents of Pb and Cd 〔minimum-maximum(mean)〕were 0.189-1.82㎎/kg(0.568) and not detected(ND)-0.016㎎/kg(0.0008) in domestic acacia honeys(n=20), ND-1.702㎎/kg(0.329) and ND-0.243㎎/kg(0.013) in domestic wild flower honeys(n=18), ND-0.322㎎/kg(0.073), ND-0.027㎎/kg(0.002) in imported honeys(n=13), ND-3.754㎎/kg(0.671) and ND-0.658㎎/kg(0.073) in foreign honeys(n=9) brought by Korean travellers, respectively. According to the results, foreign honeys brought by Korean travellers were detected with the highest level of Pb and Cd. Therefore, we recommend that heavy metals of domestic and foreign honeys should be continuously monitored. It is also thought that these results could be the important references to establish the standard of Pb and Cd in honey.

For the machining of freeform surface, fly cutting is one of the key technology to meet profile accuracy and surface roughness simultaneously. Fly cutting can be applied to manufacturing of optical components with complex profile. In this study aluminum alloy was machined in the process of ultra precision fly cutting and investigated optimum machining conditions in terms of feed-rate, pitch per cycle and depth of cut.
