Screening of estrogenic activity on dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), dichloro diphenyl dichloro ethylene (DDE), dieldrin, heptachlor, aldrin, chlordane, lindane, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and parabens was compared using Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) test guideline 455 (TG455). The estrogenic activity of DDT was 58,000-fold (PC??, 1.67 × 10?? M) less than 17β-estradiol(E₂) (PC??, 2.88 × 10?¹¹ M) but DDE, dieldrin, heptachlor, aldrin, chlordane, lindane and PBDE did not show any estrogenic activity in this assay system. In the case of paraben compounds, the rank of relative transcriptional activation (logRTA) was butyl paraben ?1.63752 (PC??, 1.25 × 10??M) > isobutyl paraben ?2.34008 (PC??, 6.3 × 10??M) > ethyl paraben ?2.64016 (PC??, 1.26 × 10?? M) > isopropyl paraben ?2.73993 (PC??, 1.58 × 10??M) > propyl paraben ?2.84164 (PC??, 2.0 × 10?? M). Our data suggest that OECD test guideline TG455 may be useful as a screening tool for potential endocrine disruptors.
Transverse X-ray radiation from petawatt-laser-driven electron acceleration in a gas cell

We measure X-rays emitted perpendicular to the laser propagation direction in petawatt-laser-driven wakefeld acceleration of electrons in a gas cell. Multi-mega-electronvolt electrons are ejected in the transverse direction by laser-driven plasma wakefelds, generating bremsstrahlung X-rays when they encounter a dense medium such as a gas-cell window. The X-rays, detected and characterized by two separate flter-stack spectrometers containing a series of imaging plates, exhibit peak energy fuences at~150–200 keV. The mechanism of electron acceleration in the transverse direction and subsequent bremsstrahlung X-ray generation is also examined and confrmed using particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo FLUKA simulations.

More than 50% of sepsis cases are associated with pneumonia. Sepsis is caused by infiltration of bacteria into the blood via inflammation, which is triggered by the release of cell wall components following lysis. However, the regulatory mechanism of lysis during infection is not well defined. Mice were infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 wild-type (WT) and lipase mutant (${\Delta}lipA$) intranasally (pneumonia model) or intraperitoneally (sepsis model), and survival rate and pneumococcal colonization were determined. LipA and autolysin (LytA) levels were determined by qPCR and western blotting. S. pneumoniae Spd_1447 in the D39 (type 2) strain was identified as a lipase (LipA). In the sepsis model, but not in the pneumonia model, mice infected with the ${\Delta}lipA$ displayed higher mortality rates than did the D39 WT-infected mice. Treatment of pneumococci with serum induced LipA expression at both the mRNA and protein levels. In the presence of serum, the ${\Delta}lipA$ displayed faster lysis rates and higher LytA expression than the WT, both in vitro and in vivo. These results indicate that a pneumococcal lipase (LipA) represses autolysis via inhibition of LytA in a sepsis model.
White ginseng extract induces immunomodulatory effects via the MKK4-JNK pathway

Panax ginseng Meyer (white ginseng) is a popular functional food and its biological effects on the human body have been noted for hundreds of years. In the present study, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the immunomodulatory effects of white ginseng extract (WGE) were investigated. WGE increased NO production via upregulation of iNOS expression levels. Mouse cytokine array results also revealed that the expression of 13 cytokines was elevated by WGE treatment in IFN-${\gamma}$-primed macrophage cells. Although both MKK4-JNK and MEK-ERK signaling pathways were activated after treatment with WGE, only the MKK4-JNK signaling pathway appears to have any significant immunomodulatory significance. Oral administration of WGE for 28 days recovered cyclophosphamide (CY)-induced suppression of the immune system in mice via the MKK4-JNK pathway. Taken together, these findings suggest that the MKK4-JNK signaling pathway is a crucial mechanism of WGE-induced immunomodulation.

龜裂을 包含하는 Cylinderical Tube가 純粹비틀림 狀態에 놓일 경우, 龜裂尖端周邊의 應力分布와 應力擴大係數(Crack-tip Stress Intensity Factor) K를 光彈性應力凍結法(Photoelastic Stress Freezing Method)에 의해 解析·檢討하였다. An experimental investigation by using photoelastic stress freezing technique is carried out to study the stress distribution and to determine the stress intensity factors for arbitrarily oriented cracks in thin cylinderical tubes subjected to pure torsion. Several conclusions were obtained as follows: 1) The present investigation is concerned with the determination of SIFs for arbitrarily oriented crack in tubes subjected to pure torsion by using stress freezing method. 2) For crack orientations of α=0 deg. and 90 deg, the fringe patterns were identical and these agreed with the computer plots of maximum shear stress lines of a Mode Ⅱ crack obtained by Sanford. The mixed mode situations occured at crack orientations of α=30 deg, 45 deg. and 60 deg. 3) The values of nondimensionalized K?? and K?? obtained for cracks were very similar to the theoretical curves and experimental curves of Srinath, et al. 4) The following experimental equations, K?? and K?? for any crack orientations, were obtained from the experimental results. 미얀마(The Union of Myanmar)는 국토면적 676, 590㎢(한반도의 3.5배)에 인구는 46백만명에 불과한 후진 농업국이지만 농업어업 및 광업 등의 자원국이며, 양질의 풍부한 노동력 보유국이다. 중남부는 열대몬순기후대에 속하지만 북부지역은 아열대기후이고 고산지역은 온대기후를 가진 곳도 있으며 5월-10월은 雨期이다. 농경지면적은 국토의 14.9%(약 천만㏊)이지만 농업개발이 가능한 황무지가 12.2%(약 8백만㏊)로 개발여지가 큰 편이며, 주요작물은 벼, 땅콩, 참깨, 해바라기, 밀, 옥수수, 쥬트(황마), 사탕수수, 두류 등이다. 생산력은 낮은 편인데 그 원인은 관배수 시설부족, 비료부족, 농기계화 미진 등에 기인된다. 그러므로 우리나라의 자본과 기술 및 농자재가 투자되면 획기적인 농업발전과 더불어 상호이익이 기대된다. 미곡곡창인 남부델타 평야지대의 논면적은 약 3백만㏊로서 전국 논면적의 약 60%에 달하고 아직도 늪지상태의 황무지가 수만㏊에 달하며 이들은 관배수 시설에 많은 투자를 요하므로 외국기업에 장기 임대 형식으로 개발하고져 하고 있다. 이들 늪지도 乾期에는 대부분이 자연배수되므로 토양단면은 물리적으로 숙성되어 있으나 식질토이므로 배수상태의 기계화 농작업에는 주의를 요한다. 우리나라는 1961년에 영사관계를 수립하여 75년에 대사관을 설치한바 있고 90년대부터 민간투자가 활발하여 96.10월 현재 12개의 합작투자회사와 18개의 법인체가 진출하고 있어 11대 투자국이 되고있다. The Union of Myanmar, her teritory is about 676,590㎢(about 3 times bigger than Korean peninsula) and population about 46 million, not only rich in natural resources but also in labour power, although belong to less developed agricltural country at present. The south and middle parts have tropical monsoon climate but the northern part belong to sub-tropic, and even a part of alpine areas show temperate climate. The rainy season start from middle of May and last until middle of October. The arableland is about 14.9%(about 10 million ㏊) of the whole country, and still has about 8 million ㏊(12.2% of total) of reclaimable idleland. The main crops are rice, peanut, sesame sun flower, wheat, corn, jute, sugar cane, legumes etc. The productivities are rather low because of the poor facilily of irrigation and drainage, shortage of chemical fertilizers, and machinaries etc. Therefore, it is believed that the investment of Korean capital and agro-materials might be trigger agricultural development of Myanmar, and might result dual benefit. The southern deltaic plains comprise about 3 million ㏊ of paddy and several tens of thousands ㏊ of idle swamp areas. The swamp areas need a lot of investment such as embankment for monsoon rice, and irrigation facility for summer rice etc.. The government of Myanmar intend to develop these areas by the joint investment with foreign countries or want to lent out for long term to foreign firms. The clayey deltaic soils were physically ripened and salt were leached out up to 1.5m, and suited for lowaland paddy rice. Korea established consular relationship from 1961, and raised a legation to the status of embassy in 1975. An active investment from early 90's by the privated firms became 11th larger investing country to Myanmar. Until end of Oct. 1996, 12 joint firms were established and 18 company extended their branch office to Myanmar.

Among the various activated carbons available in the market, an optimum mixing method of two kind activated carbons with different adsorbability was investigated in this study. The representative adsorption behaviors of the activated carbon are the adsorption isotherm plots obtained by the BET-Analysis which suggests also basic information of adsorption filter design. So we have tested three cases with certifications, the one was the extreme case of coal cokes based activated carbon with highest BET-model and coconut-shell based activated carbon with the lowest Langmuir-model, the other middle and cross case were applied this method to two kinds of activated carbons with higher and lower specific surface areas which are not available but supplied as research samples by an authority of an Korean Research institute.
