Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy based on portal ramification of the right anterior section: A prospective multicenter experience with short-term outcomes

        Truong Giang Nguyen,Thanh Khiem Nguyen,Ham Hoi Nguyen,Hong Son Trinh,Tuan Hiep Luong,Minh Trong Nguyen,Van Duy Le,Hai Dang Do,Kieu Hung Nguyen,Van Minh Do,Quang Huy Tran,Cuong Thinh Nguyen 한국간담췌외과학회 2024 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.28 No.1

Backgrounds/Aims: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy (Ps–AH) based on portal ramification of the right anterior section (RAS) is a new technique to avoid unnecessarily transecting too much liver parenchyma, especially in cases of major anatomical hepatectomy. Methods: We prospectively assessed 26 patients with primary hepatic malignancies having undergone major Ps–AH based on portal ramification of the RAS from August 2018 to August 2022 (48 months). The perioperative indications, clinical data, intra-operative index, pathological postoperative specimens, postoperative complications, and follow-up results were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Among the 26 patients analyzed, there was just one case that had intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma The preoperative level of α– Fetoprotein was 25.2 ng/mL. All cases (100%) had Child–Pugh A liver function preoperatively. The ventral/dorsal RAS was preserved in 19 and 7 patients, respectively. The mean surgical margin was 6.2 mm. The mean surgical time was 228.5 minutes, while the mean blood loss was 255 mL. In pathology, 5 cases (19.2%) had microvascular invasion, and in the group of HCC patients, 92% of all cases had moderate or poor tumor differentiation. Six cases (23.1%) of postoperative complications were graded over III according to the Clavien–Dindo system, including in three patients resistant ascites or intra-abdominal abscess that required intervention. Conclusions: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy based on portal ramification of the RAS to achieve R0-resection was safe and effective, with favorable short-term outcomes. This technique can be used widely in clinical practice.

Biocontrol Potential of Cinnamon Bark Extracts and Chitosan Against Meloidogyne incognita Inflicted Disease in Black Pepper Plants

        ( Dang-minh-chanh Nguyen ),( Thi-hoan Luong ),( Xuan-hoa Nguyen ),( Woo-jin Jung ) 한국키틴키토산학회 2021 한국키틴키토산학회지 Vol.26 No.2

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the nematicidal activity of cinnamon bark extracts (CE) and chitosan (Cs) against Meloidogyne incognita under in vitro, pot, and field conditions. In the pot experiments, CE mixed with Cs effectively inhibited M. incognita infection on black pepper plants. We applied the following formulations, which all significantly reduced the gall index and nematode number in 5 g of root and 100 g of soil: CE:Cs = 5 mg:20 mg, 10 mg:40 mg, and 15 mg:60 mg per pot. In addition, the application of CE:Cs = 32 mg:120 mg, 64 mg:240 mg, and 96 mg:360 mg per plant effectively reduced root gall formation and nematode density in black pepper roots and soil compared with that of the non-treated control under field conditions. Nematode density in the black pepper roots was positively correlated with the percentage of plants with yellow leaves. These results suggest that cinnamon mixed with chitosan may be used as an effective and eco-friendly pesticide against plant parasitic nematodes.

Nematicidal activity of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. root extracts on Meloidogyne incognita eggs and juveniles

        Dang-Minh-Chanh Nguyen,Thi-Hoan Luong,Van-Viet Nguyen,Woo-Jin Jung 한국응용생명화학회 2023 Journal of Applied Biological Chemistry (J. Appl. Vol.66 No.-

This study evaluated the in vitro nematicidal activity of Glycyrrhiza uralensis root extracts (GuRE) on Meloidogyne incognita eggs and juveniles. The results showed that treatment of M. incognita eggs with 2.0 mg/mL GuRE for 5 and 10 d resulted in 64.0 and 68.1% hatch inhibition, respectively. Furthermore, the relative mortality of J2 was 96.2% after treatment with 2.0 mg/mL GuRE for 48 h. Changes in the shape of the eggs and juveniles were determined after incubation with 2.0 mg/mL GuRE for 5 d and 48 h, respectively. These preliminary results suggest that GuRE can be used as an environment-friendly bio-nematicide to control root-knot nematodes. In the future, in vivo assays should be conducted using GuRE to ascertain its potential for widespread application as a nematicide.

      • A Solvent-Assisted Compression Molded of Poly(L-lactide)/Hydroxyapatite Electrospun Fibers for Robust Engineered Scaffold Systems

        Luong, Nguyen Dang,Moon, Ik-Sang,Nam, Jae-Do WILEY-VCH Verlag 2009 Macromolecular materials and engineering Vol.294 No.10

<P>In an attempt to enhance the biocompatibility and mechanical strength of fibrous polymeric scaffold systems, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles were incorporated into the electrospun poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) fibers and then mechanically interlocked using a vapor-phase solvent adsorption method. The solvent-assisted compression molding substantially increased the tensile strength (from 4.61 to 12.63 MPa) and mechanical modulus (from 50.6 to 627.7 MPa) of the fibrous scaffold, which maintained the interstitial space between the fibers to allow the facile transport of nutrients and waste during cell growth and polymer biodegradation. Macrometer-sized pores (ca. 100–400 µm) were introduced into the scaffolds in a controlled fashion using the salt leaching/gas forming technique to give desired space for a facile cell implantation and growth. Overall, the developed methodology allows the polymer-based scaffold systems to be tailored for various applications in light of surface characteristics, mechanical strength, and pore size of engineered scaffolds.</P><P> <img src='wiley_img/14387492-2009-294-10-MAME200900204-gra001.gif' alt='wiley_img/14387492-2009-294-10-MAME200900204-gra001'> </P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>4 solvent-assisted compression molding technique in combination with a salt leaching/gas forming process has been developed for the fabrication of a novel fibrous scaffold based on PLLA/HAp electrospun nanocomposite electrospun fibers. Surface modification of poly(<small>L</small>-lactide) electrospun fibers with nanocrystal hydroxyapatite for engineered scaffold applications

        Luong, Nguyen Dang,Moon, Ik-Sang,Lee, Doo Sung,Lee, Young-Kwan,Nam, Jae-Do Elsevier 2008 Materials Science and Engineering C Vol.28 No.8

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The hydrophobicity of the poly(<SMALL>L</SMALL>-lactide) (PLLA) surface was modified by incorporating hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocrystalline particles during the electrospinning process for the engineered scaffold applications. The HAp nanocrystals were synthesized with 30?nm in diameter and 100–120?nm in length, which subsequently formed micrometer-sized agglomerates in the range of 2.5?μm. The synthesized HAp agglomerates were electrospun in the PLLA solution, and the HAp nanocrystals were desirably exposed on the surface of the electrospun PLLA fibers to give higher surface energy and lower contact angles with water. The surface-exposed hydrophilic HAp nanocrystals substantially increased the precipitation of various salts on the HAp/PLLA fiber surfaces in a buffer solution due to the hydrophilic nature and ionic affinity of HAp. Finally, the developed HAp/PLLA fibers desirably sustained the fibrous structural integrity during the accelerated-aging test in water, which was not the case with the pristine PLLA fibers.</P>

Medicinal Plant Extract and Chitosan Oligomer Antifungal Activities Inhibit Phytophthora capsici

        Dang-Minh-Chanh Nguyen,Thi-Hoan Luong,Tien-Chung Nghiem,Van-Viet Nguyen,정우진 한국키틴키토산학회 2023 한국키틴키토산학회지 Vol.28 No.1

This study aims to evaluate antioxidant and antifungal activities from medicinal plant’ methanol extract, chitosan oligomer, and the two combined. Their antioxidative activity was spectroscopically assessed through 2,2-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assays. Alternatively, antifungal activity was determined through Phytophthora capsici's mycelial growth inhibition. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were observed at 1000 ppm concentrations for Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract (GU, 81.4%, IC50=238.4ppm; 83.5%, 199.5ppm, respectively), chitosan oligomer (ChiO, 64.8%, 438.2ppm; 66.6%, 314.5ppm), and GU+ChiO (78.3%, 329.7 ppm; 75.2%, 254.0 ppm). As the standard, ascorbic acid IC50 values were 112.0 and 101.7 ppm, respectively. GU, ChiO, and GU+ChiO at 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg/mL concentrations significantly reduced Phytophthora capsici mycelial growth compared with the control treatment. GU+ChiO EC50 values were 2.04, 2.45, and 2.38 mg/mL at 3, 6, and 9 days after treatment, respectively. These results suggest that the GU and ChiO combination worked as elicitors, triggering enhanced P. capsici suppression in vitro.

      • Immobilization of gold nanoparticles on poly(methyl methacrylate) electrospun fibers exhibiting solid‐state surface plasmon effect

        Luong, Nguyen Dang,Oh, Joonsuk,Lee, Youngkwan,Yeon, Ji Hyun,Hur, Jaehuyn,Park, Jong Jin,Kim, Jong Min,Nam, Jae‐,Do John Wiley Sons, Ltd 2012 Surface and interface analysis Vol.44 No.3

<P>In this study, the surface plasmon effect of Au nanoparticles was successfully realized in the solid state by embedding the Au nanoparticles on the surface of the transparent polymer fibers for the first time. Electrospinning a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and HAuCl4 mixture followed by a wet chemical reduction, the gold nanoparticles were formed on the PMMA nanocomposite electrospun fibers in a well‐distributed manner to give photostable purple color. The Au nanoparticles were all sphere shaped with an average diameter of 12 nm. Specifically, simply adjusting HAuCl4 salt concentration in the electrospinning solution, it is able to control the electrospun fiber diameter and gold nanoparticle content in the resulting PMMA/Au nanocomposite fibers. Therefore, the developed method described herein is simple and effective for the large volume production of PMMA/Au nanocomposite fibers. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

Pancreaticoduodenectomy with superior mesenteric artery first-approach combined total meso-pancreas excision for periampullary malignancies: A high-volume single-center experience with short-term outcomes

        Thanh Khiem Nguyen,Ham Hoi Nguyen,Tuan Hiep Luong,Kim Khue Dang,Van Duy Le,Duc Dung Tran,Van Minh Do,Hong Quang Pham,Hoan My Pham,Thi Lan Tran,Cuong Thinh Nguyen,Hong Son Trinh,Yosuke Inoue 한국간담췌외과학회 2024 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.28 No.1

Backgrounds/Aims: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is the only radical treatment for periampullary malignancies. Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) first approach combined with total meso-pancreas (MP) excision was conducted to improve the oncological results. There has not been any previous research of a technique that combines the SMA first approach and total MP excision with a detailed description of the MP macroscopical shape. Methods: We prospectively assessed 77 patients with periampullary malignancies between October 2020 and March 2022 (18 months). All patients had undergone PD with SMA first approach combined total MP excision. The perioperative indications, clinical data, intra-operative index, R0 resection rate of postoperative pathological specimens (especially mesopancreatic margin), postoperative complications, and follow-up results were evaluated. Results: The median operative time was 289.6 min (178−540 min), the median intraoperative blood loss was 209 mL (30−1,600 mL). Microscopically, there were 19 (24.7%) cases with metastatic MP, and five cases (6.5%) with R1-resection of the MP. The number of lymph nodes (LNs) harvested and metastatic LNs were 27.2 (maximum was 74) and 1.8 (maximum was 16), respectively. Some (46.8%) patients had pancreatic fistula, but mostly in grade A, with 7 patients (9.1%) who required re-operations. Some 18.2% of cases developed postoperative refractory diarrhea. The rate of in-hospital mortality was 1.3%. Conclusions: The PD with SMA first approach combined TMpE for periampullary malignancies was effective in achieving superior oncological statistics (rate of MP R0-resection and number of total resected LNs) with non-inferior short-term outcomes. It is necessary to evaluate survival outcomes with long-term follow-up.

Production of high purity rare earth mixture from iron-rich spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalyst using acid leaching and two-step solvent extraction process

        Le-Phuc Nguyen,Yen Thi Hai Pham,Phuong Thuy Ngo,Tri Van Tran,Loc Vinh Tran,Nam Thi Hoai Le,Luong Huu Nguyen,Tung Thanh Dang,Duc Anh Nguyen,Marco Wenzel,David Hartmann,Karsten Gloe,Jan J. Weigand,Klaus 한국화학공학회 2018 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.35 No.5

Acid leaching and a two-step solvent extraction procedure were developed to produce high purity mixture of La and Ce from iron-rich spent FCC catalyst discharged from Dzung Quat refinery (Vietnam). Acid leaching of the spent catalyst with 2M HNO3 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/3 at 80 oC in 1 h dissolved almost 90% of La while 12% of Al and 25% of Fe were transferred to the leachate. The extraction of RE metals and main impurities such as Al and Fe by a mixture of di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) was investigated. Experiments showed that it was necessary to remove Fe before extracting RE and the optimum extraction conditions for a high recovery of RE while 0% of Al extraction were pH1, contact time=10min, and D2EHPA/TBP volume ratio= 4 : 1. At these conditions, the extraction yields of La(III) and Ce(III) were 72% and 89%, respectively. A two-step solvent extraction was developed to achieve a high purity of RE mixture, which included (1) the removal of impurity Fe by 25% (v/v) diisooctyl phosphinic acid (DiOPA) in n-octane for 140 min, (2) the extraction of rare earths by a mixture of di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) in n-octane for 10 min without the need for adjusting the pH of the leaching solution.

Enhancement of the Electrical-field-induced Strain in Lead-free Bi0.5(Na,K)0.5TiO3-based Piezoelectric Ceramics: Role of the Phase Transition

Nguyen Van Quyet,Luong Huu Bac,Dang Duc Dung 한국물리학회 2015 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.66 No.8

In this work, a strong enhancement of the electric-field-induced strain in Bi0.5(Na,K)0.5TiO3- based ceramics was observed via lithium(Li) addition. The Li-added Bi0.5(Na,K)0.5TiO3-based ceramics exhibited a strain of 0.40% under an electric field of 6 kV/mm, which was almost twice the value without the Li dopant (0.21%). We obtained the highest Smax/Emax value of 668 pm/V for 4-mol% Li addition, which was due to the phase transition from pseudocubic to rhombohedral symmetry and/or to the distorted tetragonal structure. We suggest that controlling the phase transition in ferroelectric materials is a way to enhance the electric-field-induced giant strain and that the phase transition from the non-polar phase to the polar phase results in a giant electric-fieldinduced strain, which overcomes the result due to the phase transition from the polar phase to the non-polar phase and/or the distorted structure. We expect our work to open new ways to enhance the electric-filed-induced giant strain to a value that is comparable to the value for Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT)-based ceramics.
