Comparison of four malignancy risk indices in the detection of malignant ovarian masses

        Erhan Aktürk,Rıza Efendi Karaca,İbrahim Alanbay,Murat Dede,Emre Karaşahin,Müfit Cemal Yenen,İskender Başer 대한부인종양학회 2011 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.22 No.3

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of four risk of malignancy indices (RMI) to detect malignant ovarian tumors. Methods: This is a prospective study of 100 women admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Gulhane Military Medicine Academy for surgical exploration of pelvic masses. To diagnose malignant ovarian tumors, the sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values and diagnostic accuracy of four RMIs (RMI 1, RMI 2, RMI 3, and RMI 4) were obtained. Results: In our study we found that there is no statistically significant difference in the performance of four different RMIs in discriminating malignancy. We think that malignancy risk indices is more reliable than the menopausal status, serum CA-125 levels, ultrasound features and tumor size separately in detecting malignancy. Conclusion: We concluded that any of the four malignancy risk indices described can be used for selection of cases for optimal therapy. These methods are simple techniques that can be used even in less-specialized gynecology clinics to facilitate the selection of cases for referral to an oncological unit. Toona sureni (blume) merr. Seeds invigoration using 60Co Gamma-Rays irradiation

        Muhammad Zanzibar,Y. M. M. Anita Nugraheni,Kurniawati P. Putri,Naning Yuniarti,Dede J. Sudrajata,Yulianti,Dida Syamsuwida,Aam Aminah,Evayusvita Rustam,Andi Sukendro,Diana Septiningrum 한국산림과학회 2021 Forest Science And Technology Vol.17 No.2

Deteriorated seeds can be improved by invigoration treatment, including gamma-ray irradiation by Cobalt-60 (60Co). The purpose of this study was to determine the proper dose of gamma-ray irradiation (60Co) to increase the decreased vigor of suren (Toona sureni (Blume) Merr.) seeds. This study uses a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with aging and irradiation as the treatments. Aging factors consisted of 0, 2, and 4 days. Irradiation factor consisted of 7 levels, namely 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 100 Gy, repeated four times. The parameters observed were the electrical conductivity, germination percentage, germination speed, and seedling height. The results showed that Seed aging treatment significantly affected Suren seed germination with 75% (2 days aging) and 56% (4 days aging) germination. The 40 Gy dose of gamma-ray irradiation could increase germination percentage and germination speed of low suren seed vigor increasing 51.42% and 60.21%, respectively. Simultaneously, the cell membrane damage of stored suren increased with gamma-ray irradiation treatment of more than 40 Gy based on electrical conductivity. In seeds with high germination, such as seeds without aging and seed aging for two days with a germination percentage of 80% and 75%, respectively, the invigoration treatment was not effective. Invigoration treatment was effective in increasing the deteriorated or low viability and vigor of the suren seeds.

Topology optimization for design of segmented permanent magnet arrays with ferromagnetic materials

Lee, Jaewook,Yoon, Minho,Nomura, Tsuyoshi,Dede, Ercan M. Elsevier 2018 Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials Vol.449 No.-

Abstract

This paper presents multi-material topology optimization for the co-design of permanent magnet segments and iron material. Specifically, a co-design methodology is proposed to find an optimal border of permanent magnet segments, a pattern of magnetization directions, and an iron shape. A material interpolation scheme is proposed for material property representation among air, permanent magnet, and iron materials. In this scheme, the permanent magnet strength and permeability are controlled by density design variables, and permanent magnet magnetization directions are controlled by angle design variables. In addition, a scheme to penalize intermediate magnetization direction is proposed to achieve segmented permanent magnet arrays with discrete magnetization directions. In this scheme, permanent magnet strength is controlled depending on magnetization direction, and consequently the final permanent magnet design converges into permanent magnet segments having target discrete directions. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, three design examples are provided. The examples include the design of a dipole Halbach cylinder, magnetic system with arbitrarily-shaped cavity, and multi-objective problem resembling a magnetic refrigeration device.

Highlights

A co-design method of magnet segment and iron is proposed using topology optimization.

A material interpolation scheme is proposed for multi-material representation.

A penalization scheme is proposed to achieve segmented magnet arrays.

The effectiveness of proposed design method is validated in three optimization examples.

Topology optimization for continuous and discrete orientation design of functionally graded fiber-reinforced composite structures

Lee, Jaewook,Kim, Dongjin,Nomura, Tsuyoshi,Dede, Ercan M.,Yoo, Jeonghoon Elsevier 2018 COMPOSITE STRUCTURES -BARKING THEN OXFORD- Vol.201 No.-

Abstract

This paper presents a topology optimization method for the sequential design of material layout and fiber orientation in functionally graded fiber-reinforced composite structures. Specifically, the proposed method can find the optimal structural layout of matrix and fiber materials together with optimal discrete fiber orientations. In this method, an orientation design variable in the Cartesian coordinate system is employed with a conventional density design variable. The orientation design variable controls not only the fiber orientation, but also fiber volume fraction. The fiber volume fraction control can be used to relax the orientation design problem and simultaneously design a functionally graded structural layout of fiber material. To avoid intermediate fiber orientations and achieve discrete fiber orientation design, a penalization scheme is applied to the orientation design variable. For solving the optimization problem which involves multiple design variables such as the density variable, fiber orientation variable, and target discrete orientation set, a three-step sequential optimization procedure is proposed. In this procedure, the result for each step provides the isotropic design, continuous fiber orientation design, and functionally graded discrete orientation design, respectively. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, numerical examples for structural compliance minimization and compliant mechanism design are provided.

Development of High-Yielding Rice Varieties Suitable for Swampy Lands in Indonesia

        ( Indrastuti A. Rumanti ),( Yudhistira Nugraha ),( Rina H. Wening ),( Zennia Jean C. Gonzaga ),( Suwarno ),( Anggiani Nasution ),( Dede Kusdiaman ),( Endang M. Septiningsih ) 한국육종학회 2016 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.4 No.4

Productivity of swampy land rice varieties in Indonesia remains low due to abiotic and biotic stresses. Iron toxicity, submergence and long-term flooding are common problems that affect plant growth, sometimes leading to total crop loss. Meanwhile, rice blast, rice tungro virus (RTV), and bacterial leaf blight (BLB) can also lead to severe yield loss. These stresses could be overcome by an integrative approach of cultural practices and planting multi-stress tolerant rice. Here we describe the development of new high-yielding varieties that are adapted to the swampy land environments in Indonesia with multi-stress tolerance to diverse abiotic and biotic stresses. Multi-environmental trials were performed in nine locations to screen for several abiotic and biotic stresses in the field and greenhouse in 2012 and 2013. This study identified promising rice lines that had high grain yield as well as tolerance to iron toxicity and submergence, resistance to BLB and RTV, and good grain quality. The best line was B11377F-MR-34-2, derived from a double cross among Cinglonik, IRBB7, Mamberamo and IR64. It was confirmed that this advanced breeding line carries the submergence tolerance gene, SUB1, through expression analysis of the SUB1A gene. Another promising line was B11586F-MR-11-2-2, having iron toxicity tolerance, resistance to RTV, and high milling recovery. Moreover, these lines have passed the Indonesian national variety release committee and have been named as Inpara8 and Inpara9, and are targeted for dissemination and adoption in the swampy areas.
