Background: Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD) are chronic and relapsing disorders characterized by asymmetrical rash of petechial and pigmentary macules confined to the lower limbs. Clinical and histopathological study of PPD has not been conducted in Korea. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and histopathological features of PPD in Koreans. Methods: We reviewed all the medical records, photographs and histopathological slides of 35 patients who had been diagnosed with PPD at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital between January 2008 and June 2013. Results: The mean duration of disease was 26.5 months, and both legs were most frequently involved site (85.7%). Most of the patients were asymptomatic (74.2%). Patients were treated with topical or systemic steroid in 30 cases (85.7%) and 9 patients were added tranexamic acid but there was no difference in the clinical course according to the treatment. The identified etiologic factors were orthostatic pressure (17.1%) and exercise (5.7%). Patients without etiologic factors had more frequent incidence of medical problems (p<0.05). The major microscopic features of the lesions of PPD were perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltration, extravasated erythrocytes and hemosiderin deposition. Conclusion: The results of this study may help clinicians to diagnose PPD and it should be included in differential diagnosis when cutaneous lesions especially show asymptomatic persisting rash on both lower legs.

<▼1>
Chromatin regulation underlies a variety of DNA metabolism processes, including transcription, recombination, repair, and replication. To perform a quantitative genetic analysis of chromatin accessibility, we obtained open chromatin profiles across 96 genetically different yeast strains by FAIRE (formaldehyde-assisted isolation of regulatory elements) assay followed by sequencing. While 5∼10% of open chromatin region (OCRs) were significantly affected by variations in their underlying DNA sequences, subtelomeric areas as well as gene-rich and gene-poor regions displayed high levels of sequence-independent variation. We performed quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping using the FAIRE signal for each OCR as a quantitative trait. While individual OCRs were associated with a handful of specific genetic markers, gene expression levels were associated with many regulatory loci. We found multi-target trans-loci responsible for a very large number of OCRs, which seemed to reflect the widespread influence of certain chromatin regulators. Such regulatory hotspots were enriched for known regulatory functions, such as recombinational DNA repair, telomere replication, and general transcription control. The OCRs associated with these multi-target trans-loci coincided with recombination hotspots, telomeres, and gene-rich regions according to the function of the associated regulators. Our findings provide a global quantitative picture of the genetic architecture of chromatin regulation.
</▼1><▼2>
Author Summary

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping is a genetic approach that allows the identification of genetic factors underlying a phenotype of interest. Genomic technologies such as DNA microarray and next-generation sequencing provide data that can be used for the analysis of multiple molecular phenotypes. For example, the expression levels of thousands of genes can be associated with subject-specific genome-wide genetic information in expression QTL mapping. Similarly, the genetic regulation of transcription factor binding or epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation or chromatin structure has begun to be investigated. In particular, the mechanisms controlling chromatin accessibility have attracted special interest due to their importance in a variety of DNA regulation processes including recombination, repair, replication, and transcription. In this work, we sought to dissect the genetic architecture of chromatin accessibility regulation by harnessing the power of genetic and genomic techniques. By analyzing open (accessible) chromatin maps of multiple yeast individuals in association with their genetic backgrounds, we were able to characterize the regulatory structure of chromatin traits versus that of gene expression. Importantly, we observed that the genetic loci responsible for multiple open chromatin regions were enriched for known regulatory factors.
</▼2>
Hydrothermal Reaction for the Preparation of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3
Sang M. Lee,Hungsu Im,Bon-Heun Koo,Chan-Gyu Lee,Gom-Bai Chon 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.6
Fine powders of perovskite structured manganites, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, were synthesized by using a hydrothermal reaction, followed by a calcination reaction in some cases. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed the desired composition without other impurity phases after calcination. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed clean and pure images. The magnetic property measurement was performed in a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was around 240 K and of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 was around 350 K.hiK

( Heun Joo Lee ),( Jung In Kim ),( Jung Min ),( Hyun Min Seo ),( Sang Hyeon Hwang ),( Yoon Hwan Kim ),( Joon Hong Min ),( Joon Lee ),( Seung Jae Lee ),( Ji Hye Park ),( Ga Young Lee ),( Soo Hong Park 대한피부과학회 2013 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.65 No.2
Background: Skin diseases on the anogenital areas cause sexual and functional problems, and these problems are important to most patients, so awareness of these disease entities is very important. Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the epidemiological aspects of skin diseases on anogenital areas that were confirmed by biopsies, and we wanted to highlight the clinical features of dermatoses of the anogenital areas. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 132 patients with anogenital lesions and these lesions were confirmed by biopsy at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital between January 2008 and June 2013. Results: The ratio of males to females was 104:28. The most frequent anogenital skin diseases of men were condyloma acuminatum(26%), epidermal cyst(9%), calcinosis cutis(7%), extramammary paget`s disease(7%), and the most frequent anogenital skin diseases of women were condyloma acuminatum(25%), Behcet`s disease(18%), epidermal cyst(11%). Of the 132 cases, 81 had papules or nodules, 32 had patches or plaques, and 19 had vesicles, erosions or ulcers. Conclusion: We retrospectively studied 132 cases of anogenital skin diseases. This study suggests that various conditions, including sexually transmitted infections, neoplasms, ulcerative disorders, and inflammatory dermatoses, can affect the anogenital areas and show different characteristics according to the diagnosis. These diseasespecific characteristics may be helpful to diagnosis before histopathological confirmations.
