We investigated the androgenic effects of $17{\alpha}$-methyltestosterone (MT) on gonadal sex reversal in juvenile red spotted grouper Epinephelus akaara. The fish were immersed in $17{\alpha}$-MT at 1 and 5 mg/L. Treatment method of $17{\alpha}$-MT was once weekly for 4 and 8 weeks. Fish were sampled at 12 months after end of the treatment period in order to histological analysis. At the initiation of an experiment (70 day after hatching), juvenile red spotted grouper have the paired primordial gonads with somatic cells bellow kidney in the posterior portion of the body cavity. Formation of ovarian cavity indicates that the ovarian differentiation beginning at 70 DAH in red spotted grouper. At 12 months after end of the treatment period, control group, $17{\alpha}$-MT 1 mg/L treatment group for 4 and 8 weeks, and $17{\alpha}$-MT 5 mg/L treatment group for 4 weeks were all female. However, sex-changed males without ovarian cavity were observed in the $17{\alpha}$-MT 5 mg/L treatment group for 8 weeks. In grouper, we firstly reported that the red spotted grouper be able to induce the primary males by hormone treatment prior to gonadal sex differentiation.
Tribological effects of pores on an anodized Al alloy surface as lubricant reservoir
Lee, Gyu-Sun,Choi, Joo hoon,Choi, Yong Chan,Bu, Sang Don,Lee, Young-Ze Elsevier 2011 CURRENT APPLIED PHYSICS Vol.11 No.5

Abstract

Porous anodic alumina (PAA) templates having three kinds of nanometer pores were manufactured to investigate the effects of pores on an anodized aluminum surface as lubricant reservoir. Ball-on-disk wear tests of the PAA templates were carried out in the three types of lubrication conditions. The PAA templates submerged under water for 30 min showed lower friction coefficient and longer transition time to steady state compared to those that were not submerged. Pores act as a lubricant reservoir because the water stored inside the pore is released to the surface due to elastic–plastic deformation. However, the effect of oxide layer developed by tribochemical reaction on the surface is greater than lubricant reservoir effect of the pore. In particular, the submerged PAA templates with 260 nm pores under dry lubricant condition formed more hydroxide layers than other cases, which resulted in the decrease in friction.

Zinc oxysulfide nanocrystals (ZnOS NCs) were synthesized by forming ZnS phase on a ZnO matrix. ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) with a diameter of 10 nm were synthesized by forced hydrolysis in an organic solvent. As-synthesized ZnO NCs aggregated with each other due to the high surface energy. As acetic acid (AA) was added into the milky suspension of the aggregated ZnO NCs, transparent solution of well dispersed ZnO NCs formed. Finally ZnOS NCs were formed by adding thioacetic acid (TAA) to the transparent solution. The effect of recrystallization on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the ZnOS NCs were studied. The results of UV-vis absorption confirmed the band gap tunability caused by increasing the curing temperature of ZnOS thin films. This may have originated from the larger effective size due to the recrystallization of zinc sulfide (ZnS). From XRD result we identified that ZnOS thin films have a zinc blende crystal structure of ZnS without wurtzite ZnO structure. This is probably due to the small amount of ZnO phases. These assertions were verified through EDS of FE-SEM, XPS and EDS mapping of HR-TEM results; we clearly proved that ZnOS were comprised of ZnS and ZnO phases.

Sang, Byung Don,Kong, Hong Sik,Kim, Hak Kyu,Choi, Chul Hwan,Kim, Si Dong,Cho, Yong Min,Sang, Byung Chan,Lee, Jun Heon,Jeon, Gwang Joo,Lee, Hak Kyo Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.3
Heritabilities and genetic correlations of economic traits were estimated with a multiple-trait animal model on 5 different strains of Korea Native Chickens (KNC): Red Brown (RB), Yellow Brown (YB), Gray Brown (GB), Black (B) and White (W). The data used for this study were collected from the Daejeon branch of the National Livestock Research Institute and included 11,233 performance records and 12,729 individual animals. DFREML and SAS BASE/STAT packages were used to estimate genetic parameters and descriptive statistics. The estimated heritabilities for strain RB, YB, GB, B and W, respectively, for age at 1st egg were 0.24, 0.27, 0.12, 0.32 and 0.18; for body weight at first egg were 0.39, 0.43, 0.38, 0.52 and 0.57; for body weight at age of 270 days were 0.43, 0.51, 0.30, 0.52 and 0.67; for egg weight at first egg were 0.08, 0.13, 0.07, 0.06 and 0.07; for egg weight at age of 270 days were 0.37, 0.43, 0.22, 0.34 and 0.41; and for number of eggs laid by age of 270 days were 0.24, 0.25, 0.37, 0.36 and 0.30. The genetic and phenotypic correlations were also estimated.

As the molecular biology of vestibular schwannoma (VS) is better understood, new means of targeting the pathways involved for intervention in schwannoma cells are being developed. Honokiol, a bioactive constituent of Magnolia officinalis, has attracted attention due to its diverse biological effects. This study was conducted to determine the inhibitory effect of honokiol on schwannoma cell proliferation.
