Human cytomegalovirus microRNA miR-US4-1 inhibits CD8+ T cell responses by targeting the aminopeptidase ERAP1

        Kim, Sungchul,Lee, Sanghyun,Shin, Jinwook,Kim, Youngkyun,Evnouchidou, Irini,Kim, Donghyun,Kim, Young-Kook,Kim, Young-Eui,Ahn, Jin-Hyun,Riddell, Stanley R,Stratikos, Efstratios,Kim, V Narry,Ahn, Kwangs Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2011 NATURE IMMUNOLOGY Vol.12 No.10

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules present peptides on the cell surface to CD8+ T cells, which is critical for the killing of virus-infected or transformed cells. Precursors of MHC class I??presented peptides are trimmed to mature epitopes by the aminopeptidase ERAP1. The US2??US11 genomic region of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is dispensable for viral replication and encodes three microRNAs (miRNAs). We show here that HCMV miR-US4-1 specifically downregulated ERAP1 expression during viral infection. Accordingly, the trimming of HCMV-derived peptides was inhibited, which led to less susceptibility of infected cells to HCMV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Our findings identify a previously unknown viral miRNA??based CTL-evasion mechanism that targets a key step in the MHC class I antigen-processing pathway.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Zoledronic Acid and Amifostine on Radiation-induced Bone Loss in Mice

        Kim, Jinwook,Lee, Sueun,Kang, Sohi,Moon, Changjong,Kim, Jong-Choon,Jung, Uhee,Jo, Sung-Kee,Jang, Jong-Sik,Kim, Sung-Ho The Korean Association for Radiation Protection 2016 방사선방어학회지 Vol.41 No.3

Background: This study investigated the effects of zoledronic acid (ZA) on radiation-induced bone loss in C3H/HeN mice. Materials and Methods: C3H/HeN mice were divided into sham control and three irradiated groups (3 Gy, gamma ray). The irradiated mice were treated for 12 weeks with vehicle, amifostine (intraperitoneal injection), or ZA (subcutaneous injection). Grip strength, uterus weight, and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) levels were measured. Tibiae were analyzed using micro-computed tomography. Results and Discussion: Treatment of ZA ($100{\mu}g{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}week^{-1}$) significantly preserved trabecular bone volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number, trabecular separation, bone mineral density of proximal tibia metaphysic, and cortical bone volume, but did not alter the uterus weight of the mice. The administration of ZA for 12 weeks lowered serum ALP and TRAP levels in irradiated mice, suggesting that ZA can reduce the bone turnover rate in mice. No differences were apparent between the amifostine-treated group and the irradiation control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that ZA can prevent radiation-induced bone loss in mice.

JPEG2000 3D compression vs 2D compression: An assessment of artifact amount and computing time in compressing thin-section abdomen CT images : JPEG2000 3D compression vs 2D compression

        Kim, Bohyoung,Lee, Kyoung Ho,Kim, Kil Joong,Richter, Thomas,Kang, Heung-Sik,Kim, So Yeon,Kim, Young Hoon,Seo, Jinwook Wiley (John WileySons) 2009 Medical physics Vol.36 No.3

<P>To assess the advantages of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)2000 3D (part 2) over JPEG2000 in compressing thin-section abdomen CT data sets, 60 thin-section (0.67 mm) scans from 35 males and 25 females, ranging from 23 to 95 years of age (mean, 58 years), were compressed reversibly (as a negative control) and irreversibly to 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 using JPEG2000 3D and JPEG2000 algorithms. Encoding and decoding times and peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNRs) were measured. For 60 (one image per scan) representative sections containing abnormalities, three radiologists independently compared original and compressed images and graded compression artifacts as 0 (none, indistinguishable), 1 (barely perceptible), 2 (subtle), or 3 (significant). According to pooled radiologists' responses, the range of visually lossless threshold (VLT, the highest compression ratio at which a compressed image is indistinguishable from its original) was determined as one of <4:1, 4:1-6:1, 6:1-8:1, 8:1-10:1, 10:1-12:1, and >12:1. Wilcoxon signed rank tests and exact tests for paired proportions were used for the comparisons between the two compressions. At each irreversible compression ratio, compared to JPEG2000, JPEG2000 3D required two- or threefold greater computing times (p < 0.001) and introduced less artifacts in terms of PSNR (p <0.001) and the grade (p < 0.02 at 6:1 or higher) and the presence of perceived artifacts (p <0.008, at 6:1 for all readers and at 8:1 for two readers). According to PSNR and readers' responses, 6:1 and 8:1 JPEG2000 3D compressions showed more artifacts than 4:1 and 6:1 JPEG2000 compressions, respectively, and 10:1 and 12:1 JPEG2000 3D compressions showed similar artifacts to those of 8:1 and 10:1 JPEG2000 compressions, respectively. The determined VLT range was higher for JPEG2000 3D than for JPEG2000 (p < 0.001): the 3D compression showed the VLT ranges of 4:1-6:1, 6:1-8:1, and 8:1-10:1 for 24 (40%), 30 (50%), and 6 (10%) of the 60 original images, respectively, while the 2D compression showed the VLT ranges of <4:1, 4:1-6:1, and 6:1-8:1 for 1 (1.7%), 40 (66.7%), and 19 (31.6%) images, respectively. Compared to JPEG2000, JPEG2000 3D increased the VLT range in 23 of the 60 original images by one (n=22) or two ranges (n=1), while the remaining 37 images had the same VLT range between the two compressions. In conclusion, compared to JPEG2000 compression, JPEG2000 3D compression yields less artifacts in compressing thin-section abdomen CT images but requires significantly greater computing times. For the tested data set compressed to the range from 4:1 to 12:1, JPEG2000 3D could increase compression level reasonably (by 2 or less in terms of compression ratio) compared to JPEG2000 for the same amount of artifacts.</P>

      • Persistent Topological Surface State at the Interface of Bi2Se3 Film Grown on Patterned Graphene

        Kim, Namdong,Lee, Paengro,Kim, Youngwook,Kim, Jun Sung,Kim, Yongsam,Noh, Do Young,Yu, Seong Uk,Chung, Jinwook,Kim, Kwang S. American Chemical Society 2014 ACS NANO Vol.8 No.2

<P>We employed graphene as a patternable template to protect the intrinsic surface states of thin films of topological insulators (TIs) from environment. Here we find that the graphene provides high-quality interface so that the Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillation associated with a topological surface state could be observed at the interface of a metallic Bi2Se3 film with a carrier density higher than ∼1019 cm–3. Our <I>in situ</I> X-ray diffraction study shows that the Bi2Se3 film grows epitaxially in a quintuple layer-by-layer fashion from the bottom layer without any structural distortion by interfacial strain. The magnetotransport measurements including SdH oscillations stemming from multiple conductance channels reveal that the topological surface state, with the mobility as high as ∼0.5 m2/(V s), remains intact from the graphene underneath without degradation. Given that the graphene was prepatterned on arbitrary insulating substrates, the TI-based microelectronic design could be exploited. Our study thus provides a step forward to observe the topological surface states at the interface without degradation by tuning the interface between TI and graphene into a measurable current for device application.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2014/ancac3.2014.8.issue-2/nn405503k/production/images/medium/nn-2013-05503k_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn405503k'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Free-Positioning Wireless Charging System for Small Electronic Devices Using a Bowl-Shaped Transmitting Coil

Jinwook Kim,Do-Hyeon Kim,Jeonghee Choi,Kwan-Ho Kim,Young-Jin Park Professional Technical Group on Microwace Theory a 2015 IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniqu Vol. No.

<P>This paper presents a wireless power transfer (WPT) system using a bowl-shaped transmitting (Tx) coil and its application for charging small electronic devices such as hearing aids and wearable electronic devices. The receiving (Rx) electronic devices are placed in the Tx coil and charged effectively with spatial freedom. The WPT system includes three coils for power transfer: a source coil, a Tx resonant coil, and a parallel-resonance Rx coil. The proposed Tx resonant coil is bowl shaped and made of spiral and conical-shaped helical coils in series. A compact box-like Rx coil with ferrite sheets in the box is designed to improve magnetic coupling. To analyze the proposed system, an equivalent circuit of the system is presented. Magnetic fields of the bowl-shaped Tx coil, as well as the mutual inductance between the Tx and Rx coils are derived. For the verification of theoretical analyses and calculations, a wireless charging system for hearing aids is fabricated. It is shown that the proposed system can uniformly charge a Li-ion battery with 30% overall efficiency in the parallel arrangement. Furthermore, even in the perpendicular arrangement, the battery can be charged, except for a narrow dead zone near the center of the Tx coil.</P>

      • Brain-derived neurotropic factor and GABAergic transmission in neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration

        Kim, Jinwook,Lee, Sueun,Kang, Sohi,Kim, Sung-Ho,Kim, Jong-Choon,Yang, Miyoung,Moon, Changjong Medknow PublicationsMedia Pvt Ltd 2017 Neural regeneration research Vol.12 No.10

<P>Neurotoxicity induced by stress, radiation, chemicals, or metabolic diseases, is commonly associated with excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. The pathological process of neurotoxicity induces neuronal death, interrupts synaptic plasticity in the brain, and is similar to that of diverse neurodegenerative diseases. Animal models of neurotoxicity have revealed that clinical symptoms and brain lesions can recover over time <I>via</I> neuroregenerative processes. Specifically, brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic transmission are related to both neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration. This review summarizes the accumulating evidences that suggest a pathogenic role of BDNF and GABAergic transmission, their underlying mechanisms, and the relationship between BDNF and GABA in neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of the underlying mechanisms of neuroregeneration that may help in developing potential strategies for pharmacotherapeutic approaches to treat neurotoxicity and neurodegenerative disease.</P>

In this paper, calculation method of mutual inductance for two circular coils which are widely used in wireless power transfer system and analysis results using the method are proposed. Two circular coils are arranged in a perpendicular way. For calculation of the mutual inductance, an Rx coil placed perpendicularly with the other coil is uniformly subdivided into many unit cells and both magnetic flux density linked with the Rx coil at each unit cell and the total magnetic flux density of the Rx coil are obtained. Two circular coils are considered as a filamentary coil and uniform current density on each coil is assumed. For verification, helical and spiral coils are fabricated. As a result of measurement in 50 cm to 100 cm distance, theoretical mutual inductance is almost agreed with measured one.
