This study was conducted to select thin-shelled and high-yielding lines in job`s-tears. Two breeding lines of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 were selected from the local collections. These two lines were tested and investigated on their characteristics under the field condition. The heading date of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was later one or two days, but the maturity date was one or two days earlier than that of check variety Kim-jejong, respectively. The number of grains per hill of Suwon 3, Suwon 6 was 50%, 49% greater and the milling rate was 3.8%, 5.6% higher than that of check variety, respectively. Althought 1000 grain weight of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was 20g lighter and the rate of ripeness was 6%, 12% lower, the raw grain yield was 22%, 20% higher than that of check variety, respectively. The thickness of seed coat of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was thiner and the hardness of seed coat was lower than that of check variety, therefore the milling time was decreased 12%, 7% compare to check variety, respectively. The crude protein contents of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was slightly higher and the amino acid composition of Suwon 6 was similar to Kimjejong, but Suwon 3 was lower than that of check variety.
Fabrication Technology of the Focusing Grating Coupler using Single-step Electron Beam Lithography

A focusing grating coupler (FGC) was not fabricated by the 'Continuous Path Control'writing strategy but by an electron-beam lithography system of more general exposure mode, which matches not only the address grid with the grating period but also an integer multiple of the address grid resolution (5 nm). To more simplify the fabrication, we are able to reduce a process step without large decrease of pattern quality by excluding a conducting material or layer such as metal (Al, Cr, Au), which are deposited on top or bottom of an e-beam resist to prevent charge build-up during e-beam exposure. A grating pitch period and an aperture feature size of the FGC designed and fabricated by e-beam lithography and reactive ion etching were ranged over 384.3 nm to 448.2 nm, and 0.5 $\times$ 0.5 mm$^2$area, respectively. This fabrication method presented will reduce processing time and improve the grating quality by means of a consideration of the address grid resolution, grating direction, pitch size and shapes when exposing. Here our investigations concentrate on the design and efficient fabrication results of the FGC for coupling from slab waveguide to a spot in free space.
Efficacy of Thymopentin Therapy for Prophylactic Use in Recurrent Herpes Simplex Virus Infection

Herpes recurrences conincide with changes in the immunologic status of the patient, particularly in respect of cell mediated immunity (CMI), and it has been represented that thymopentin (TP) induces a wide range of immunoregulatory effects. Occurrence of relapses seems to depend on the relationship between the cellular immune mechanisms and the virus in its latent phase, therefore immunomodulatory therapy may represent an alternative approach in this disease. In this respect, thymopentin may have the potential to become a valuable drug for prophylactic use in patients with recurrent herpes simplex disease. Patients with moderate to severe herpes simplex disease (a relapse rate of at least 6/year) were treated with subcutaneous injection of thymopentin 50 mg three times weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. The study consisted of a 6-week therapy and a subsequent 1 year follow-up on the average. Fourteen of sixteen patients with herpes simplex improved as demonstrated by reduction in the relapse rate, shorter duration of episodes and improvement in symptoms such as itching or pain. Four patients did not experience a relapse for more than 1 year after cessation of therapy. In these studies, the duration of the symptom-free period increased and the average number of relapses per year was refuted. In an open study, thymopentin is a highly effective drug, capable of positively influencing recurrent herpetic episodes and reducing the relapse rate.
Production of Maltopentaose and Biochemical Characterization of Maltopentaose-Forming Amylase

Bacillus sp. AIR-5, a strain from soil, produced an extracellular maltohentaose-forming amylase from amylose and soluble starch. This bacterium produced 8.9g/l of maltopentaose from 40g/l of soluble starch in a batch fermentation and the maltopentaose made up 90% of the maltooligosaccharides produced (from maltose to maltoheptaose). The culture supernatant was concentrated using a 30K molecular weight cut-off membrane and purified by DEAE-Cellulose and Sephadex G-150 column chromatographies. The purified protein showed one band on a native-PAGE and its molecular mass was estimated as 250kDa. The 250-kDa protein was composed of tetramers of a 63-kDa protein. The isoelectric point of the purified protein was pH 6.9, and the optimum temperature for the enzyme activity was 45℃. The enzyme was quickly inactivated above 55℃, and showed a maximum activity at pH 8.5 and over 90% stability between a pH of 6 to 10. The putative N-terminal amino acid sequence of AIR-5 amylase, ATINNGTLMQYFEWYVPNDG, showed a 96% sequence similarity with that of BLA, a general liquefying amylase.

Central poststroke pain can occur as a result of lesion or dysfunction of the brain from stroke, and may influence the autonomic nervous system to regulate the vasomotor activity which could result in the lowered skin temperature. In order to assess CPSP objectively, seventy patients with CPSP were evaluated as their pain with VAS pain score and the skin temperature of pain site by infrared thermography before and after pain treatment. And evaluated correlation between changes of temperature and VAS. The skin temperature of pain site was significantly lower than non-pain before treatment and improved after treatment(p<0.05), in accordance with significant improvement of VAS pain scores after treatment(p<0.05). And there was highly correlation between the changes of temperature and VAS(p<0.05). Therefore, it is suggested that the infrared thermography is very useful device for the evaluation of CPSP and its treatment.
Lysobacter arenosi sp. nov. and Lysobacter solisilvae sp. nov. isolated from soil

Two Gram-stain negative, yellow-pigmented, and mesophilic bacteria, designated strains R7T and R19T, were isolated from sandy and forest soil, South Korea, respectively. Both strains were non-motile rods showing catalase- and oxidase-positive activities. Both strains were shown to grow at 10–37°C and pH 6.0–9.0, and in the presence of 0–1.5% (w/v) NaCl. Strain R7T contained iso-C14:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, and summed feature 9 (comprising C16:0 10-methyl and/or iso-C17:1 ω9c), whereas strain R19T contained iso-C11:0 3-OH, C16:1 ω7c alcohol, iso-C11:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, and summed feature 9 (comprising C16:0 10-methyl and/or iso-C17:1 ω9c) as major cellular fatty acids (> 5%). Both strains contained ubiquinone- 8 as the sole isoprenoid quinone and phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and an unidentified phospholipid as the major polar lipids. The DNA G + C contents of strains R7T and R19T calculated from their genomes were 66.9 mol% and 68.9 mol%, respectively. Strains R7T and R19T were most closely related to Lysobacter panacisoli C8-1T and Lysobacter niabensis GH34-4T with 98.7% and 97.8% 16S rRNA sequence similarities, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains R7T and R19T formed distinct phylogenetic lineages within the genus Lysobacter. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and molecular features, strains R7T and R19T represent novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the names Lysobacter arenosi sp. nov. and Lysobacter solisilvae sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of L. arenosi and L. solisilvae are R7T (= KACC 21663T = JCM 34257T) and R19T (= KACC 21767T = JCM 34258T), respectively.
Three-dimensional tsunami runup simulation for the port of Koborinai on the Sanriku coast of Japan

<P>The huge tsunami generated by the earthquake that occurred off the Pacific coast of Japan at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday, 11 March 2011 produced a maximum runup of 40 m on the east coast of Japan. The earthquake triggered extremely destructive tsunami waves up to 37.9 m in height that struck Japan minutes after the quake. Koborinai is a tiny fishery port located north of Miyako City in the Iwate Prefecture. A survey team from the University of Tokyo Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) found high water marks and other evidence of a gigantic wave at the port of Koborinai. The port is on low land sandwiched between two mountains. A joint survey team from ERI-Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI) visited again and surveyed the site in detail. The 3D Princeton Ocean Model was applied to describe the propagation and runup of the tsunami on the Japanese coast. The numerical simulation results obtained were in satisfactory agreement with observations made in the general area, except those made in many v-shaped valleys along the northern Iwate coast. The extremely high runup of tsunami waves at the port at Koborinai were successfully reproduced by numerical simulation through stepwise refinement of the spatial scale using multi-nesting and consideration of the vertical acceleration of flow along steep slopes using a CFD model to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The velocity field was also computed, and the simulation results show that the water flow that climbed the coast possessed a strong vertical velocity component.</P>
