Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy in patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc Methods : We investigated 30 cases of patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc, who had been treated from October 2008 to December 2011. We divided patients into two groups : Group I was treated by Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy and general acupuncture and Group II was treated by acupuncture therapy only. We measured the efficacy of treatments using the numerical rating scale(NRS). Results : 1. The treatment method for Group I was more effective than that of Group II in reducing the NRS on the tenth day after admission but there was no statistically significant difference between the results of two groups on the fifth day after admission and the tenth day after admission. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy is effective in reducing pain for patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc. Further clinical research is needed to verify these results and findings.

Adequate care of patients with end-stage renal failure on hemodialysis requires permanent vascular access. Arteriovenous fistula obstruction due to venous thrombosis is commonly observed complication, contributing significantly to morbidity and hospitalization of dialysis patients. Percutaneous intervention using angioplasty and thrombolysis has become an accepted treatment of thrombosed vascular access and demonstrated comparable technical results and patency rates with those of surgery. Recently developed percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) uses mechanical energy to clear thrombus percutaneously in combination with mechanical dissolution, fragmentation, and aspiration. PMT offers fast thrombus removal without complications related to thrombolytic therapy. We report a case of thrombosed hemodialysis native fistula which was successfully treated with percutaneous angioplasty and mechanical thrombolysis using newly introduced Arrow-Trerotola percutaneous thrombolytic device.

Antioxidant activity is important for reducing oxidative stress that causes various metabolic disorders. Metabolic disorders are highly related to loss of productivity in livestock. Therefore, development of effective antioxidant compounds originating from plants is important for organic agriculture. Phenolic compounds in edible plants are regarded as major components relevant to antioxidant activity. The present study investigated the changes in antioxidant activity and phenolic compound profiles of Aronia (Aronia meloncarpa) by fermentation using different strains of Leuconostoc mesenteroides. A total of 5 strains of L. mesenteroides were used as starter cultures and their β-glucosidase activities were measured. A total of 6 experiment runs were prepared, one for control (uninoculated) and the others (inoculated) for treatments. For biological activity, antioxidant and antibacterial activities were measured. For phenolic compound profiling, TLC and HPLC analysis were performed. The strains of KACC12313 and KACC12315 showed greater enzyme activity than others. Treatment with KCCM35046 showed strong and broad antibacterial activity against to Listeria monocytogenes. Treatments with KCCM35046 and KACC12315 showed the highest total polyphenol content. The highest antioxidant activity was found in KACC12315 treatment. No remarkable alteration was found in thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis. In phenolic compound profiling analysis, KCCM35046 showed notable alteration in compound area ratio compared to others and also showed the highest caffeic acid content. In chlorogenic acid, treatments with KCCM35046 and KACC12315 showed great content than others. Treatment with KACC12315 showed the greatest content of trans-ferulic acid. As a result of relative performance indexing analysis, L. mesenteroides KCCM35046 and KACC12315 were selected as the best strain for the fermentation of Aronia.

<P><B>Background and Purpose</B></P><P>Although traditionally regarded as spared, a range of oculomotor dysfunction has been recognized in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. ALS is nowadays considered as a neurodegenerative disorder of a third compartment comprising widespread areas of extra-motor brain including cerebellum. Our objective was to perform an observational study to examine for ocular motor dysfunction in patients with ALS and for any differences between bulbar-onset and spinal-onset patients.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Thirty two ALS patients (bulbar onset: 10, spinal onset: 22) underwent the standardized systemic evaluations using video-oculography.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Oculomotor dysfunctions such as square wave jerks, saccadic dysmetria, abnormal cogwheeling smooth pursuits and head shaking and positional nystagmus of central origin have been observed in the ALS patients at a relatively early stage. Abnormal smooth pursuits and saccadic dysmetria were increased in the bulbar-onset compared to the spinal-onset (<I>p</I><0.05).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>These oculomotor abnormalities may be a marker of neuro-degeneration beyond motor neurons in ALS, especially in bulbar-onset disease. Future longitudinal studies of eye movement abnormalities have provided insights into the distribution and nature of the disease process.</P>

In this study, the Search Your Mind (S.Y.M., 心) project aimed to collect prospective digital phenotypic data centered on mood and anxiety symptoms across psychiatric disorders through a smartphone application (app) platform while using both centralized and decentralized research designs: the centralized research design is a hybrid of a general prospective observational study and a digital platform-based study, and it includes face-to-face research such as informed written consent, clinical evaluation, and blood sampling. It also includes digital phenotypic assessment through an application-based platform using wearable devices. Meanwhile, the decentralized research design is a non-face-to-face study in which anonymous participants agree to electronic informed consent forms on the app. It also exclusively uses an application-based platform to acquire individualized digital phenotypic data. We expect to collect clinical, biological, and digital phenotypic data centered on mood and anxiety symptoms, and we propose a possible model of centralized and decentralized research design.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) family is known to mediate various biological processes in response to diverse environmental pollutants. Although MAPKs are well characterized and studied in vertebrates, in invertebrates the cross-reactivities of MAPKs antibodies were not clearly known in response to environmental pollutants due to limited information of antibody epitopes with material resources for invertebrates. In this paper, we performed phylogenetic analysis of MAPKs genes in the marine rotifer <I>Brachionus koreanus</I> and the copepods <I>Paracyclopina nana</I> and <I>Tigriopus japonicus</I>. Also in rotifer and copepods, several studies of Western blot of MAPK signaling pathways were shown in response to environmental pollutants, including multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of crude oil, and microplastics. This paper will provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanistic scenario in terms of cross-reactivities of mammalian antibodies in rotifer and copepod.</P> <P><B>Highlight</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Phylogenetic analysis of MAPKs genes was performed in rotifer and copepods. </LI> <LI> Western blot of MAPKs were reproducible upon MWCNTs, WAFs, and microplastics exposure. </LI> </UL> </P>

In the power plant using high temperature fuel cells such as Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC), the generated electric power per area of power generation facilities is much higher than any other renewable energy sources. - High temperature fuel cell systems are capable of operating at MW rated power output. - It also has a feature that is short for length of the line for connecting the interior of the generation facilities. In normal condition, these points are advantages for voltage drops or power losses. However, in abnormal condition such as fault occurrence in electrical system, the fault currents are increased, because of the small impedance of the short length of power cable. Commonly, to minimize the thermal-mechanical stresses on the stack and increase the systems reliability, we divided the power plant configuration to several banks for parallel operation. However, when a fault occurs in the parallel operation system of power main transformer, the fault currents might exceed the interruption capacity of protective devices. In fact, although the internal voltage level of the fuel cell power plant is the voltage level of distribution systems, we should install the circuit breakers for transmission systems due to fault current. To resolve these problems, the SFCL has been studied as one of the noticeable devices. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of application of the SFCL on bus tie in a fuel cell power plants system using PSCAD/EMTDC.

This study was conducted to investigate corn growth and soil fertility after soil amendment application of three types in an upland field in South Korea. Each of the barley straw biochar (BSB, applied at 1,000 kg 10a-1), animal carcass biochar (ACB, applied at 1,000 kg 10a-1) along with compost (applied at 2,000 kg 10a-1), and bottom ash (BA, applied at 1,000 kg 10a-1); the Control area was only treated compost. The corn grain yield was improved when grown under BSB, ACB, and BA with compost. Overall, biochar application had more effect on the productivity of biomass and corn yield, and showed significant results in corn cultivation. In particular, the corn grain yield was the highest under BSB treatment was over 22%, 11%, and 7% higher than those grown under Control, ACB, and BA treatments, respectively. Soil chemical properties after soil amendment addition were improved. In particular, soil pH and CEC related to crop nutrient availability were significantly increased in BSB, ACB, and BA areas compared to those in Control area. Therefore, these results indicate that corn productivity, when cultivated in soil conditions such as those in an upland field in South Korea, can be increased by application of soil amendments including BSB, ACB, and BA with compost.

Jae-Hyuk Park,Se-Won Kang,Jin-Ju Yun,Seung-Gyu Lee,So-Hui Kim,Jun-Seok Beak,Ju-Sik Cho 한국토양비료학회 2021 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.54 No.2
The effect of biochar and organic resource applications on lettuce cultivation was investigated. Treatment conditions of pot experiment were designed with CN (control), IF (inorganic fertilizer), BC400-1 (Rice husk biochar 400℃ 1%), BC400-1+CP (Rice husk biochar 400℃ 1%+compost), BC400-4 (Rice husk biochar 400℃ 4%), BC400-4+CP (Rice husk biochar 400℃ 4%+compost), BC600-1 (Rice husk biochar 600℃ 1%), BC600-1+CP (Rice husk biochar 600℃ 1%+compost), BC600-4 (Rice husk biochar 600℃ 4%) and BC600-4+CP (Rice husk biochar 600℃ 4%+compost). The lettuce fresh weight in IF, BC400, and BC600 treatments increased 185, 101-219, and 83-138%, respectively, over that in CN treatment. Total amount of nutrient uptake in lettuce increased in the order BC400-4+CP > IF ≒ BC600-4+CP ≧ BC400-4 ≧ BC400-1+CP ≧ BC600-1+CP ≧ BC600-4 ≒ BC600-1 ≧ BC400-1 ≒ CN treatments. Considering the results of fresh weight, number of leaves, and nutrients of lettuce, the growth of lettuce was most effective in BC400-4+CP treatment, over that in the IF treatment. Application of combined biochar and compost significantly affected the chemical characteristics of field soil after lettuce harvest. In addition, the positive effects of biochar and compost in soil were related to improved nutrient availability-related parameters such pH and CEC. Therefore, proper application of biochar with compost is effective at improving lettuce cultivation and can benefit the soil environment.
