The purpose of this study was to clarify the differential effect of vitamin K and vitamin D supplementation on bone mass in young rats fed a normal or low calcium diet. Ninety female Sprague-Dawley rats, 6 weeks of age, were randomized by stratified weight method into nine groups with 10 rats in each group: baseline control, and 0.5% (normal) or 0.1% (low) calcium diet, either alone, or with vitamin K (30 mg/100g, food intake), vitamin D (25μg/100g, food intake), or vitamin K+ vitamin D. After 10 weeks of feeding, bone histomorphometric analyses were performed on cortical bone of the tibial shaft and cancellous bone of the proximal tibia. Vitamin K supplementation increased the maturation-related cancellous bone gain and retarded the reduction in the maturation-related cortical bone gain in rats fed a low calcium diet, and increased the maturation-related cortical bone gain in rats fed a normal calcium diet. Vitamin D supplementation reduced the maturation-related cancellous bone gain, prevented the reduction in periosteal bone gain, and enhanced the enlargement of the marrow cavity, with no significant effect on the reduction in the maturation-related cortical bone gain in rats fed a low calcium diet, and increased the maturation- related cancellous and cortical bone gains with increased periosteal bone gain in rats fed a normal calcium diet. An additive effect of vitamin K and vitamin D on the maturation- related cortical bone gain was found in rats fed a normal calcium diet. This study shows the differential effects of vitamin K and vitamin D supplementation on cancellous and cortical bone mass in young rats fed a normal or low calcium diet, as well as the additive effect on cortical bone under calcium sufficient condition.
Phase Diagram and Transport Properties of Y1−xNdxCo2 Pseudo-binary Alloys

The electrical resistivity and the thermopower S of pseudo-binary Y1−xNdxCo2 alloys have beenmeasured at temperatures from 2 to 300 K under pressures up to 3.5 GPa. NdCo2 is a ferromagnetwith a Curie temperature TC of 98 K. In the ferromagnetic phase, it undergoes a 4f spin-reorientationtransition at TR = 40 K. At this transition, the easy direction of 4f magnetization is changed from[100] at temperatures above TR to [110] below TR. The system phase diagram TC(x, P) and TR(x, P)is inferred from the temperature dependencies of the electrical resistivity and the thermopower. The Curie temperature of the alloys, TC decreases with decreasing Nd concentration x and vanishesaround xc = 0.3. Above xc, the Curie temperature decreases with increasing pressure. The spinreorientationtemperature weakly depends on the composition and on the pressure until it mergeswith TC. There is a large region of the phase diagram, partly overlapping with the ferromagneticphase, where the cobalt 3d electron system is non-uniformly magnetized due to spatial fluctuationsof the 4f-3d exchange field related to a random distribution of Nd 4f magnetic moments over the Rsublattice. In this region, large static 3d magnetic fluctuations govern the electronic transport.

A search for light dark matter using low-threshold data from the single phase liquid xenon scintillation detector XMASS, has been conducted. Using the entire 835 kg inner volume as target, the analysis threshold can be lowered to 0.3 keVee (electron-equivalent) to search for light dark matter. With low-threshold data corresponding to a 5591.4 kg@?day exposure of the detector and without discriminating between nuclear-recoil and electronic events, XMASS excludes part of the parameter space favored by other experiments.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We established a method to assay <SUP>210</SUP>Pb and <SUP>210</SUP>Po contaminations in the bulk of copper samples using a low-background alpha particle counter. The achieved sensitivity for the <SUP>210</SUP>Pb and <SUP>210</SUP>Po contaminations reaches a few mBq/kg. Due to this high sensitivity, the <SUP>210</SUP>Pb and <SUP>210</SUP>Po contaminations in oxygen free copper bulk were identified and measured for the first time. The <SUP>210</SUP>Pb contaminations of our oxygen free copper samples were 17–40 mBq/kg. Based on our investigation of copper samples in each production step, the <SUP>210</SUP>Pb in oxygen free copper was understood to be a small residual of an electrolysis process. This method to measure bulk contaminations of <SUP>210</SUP>Pb and <SUP>210</SUP>Po could be applied to other materials.</P>
