Jochum, Florian D.,Theato, Patrick Royal Society of Chemistry 2010 Chemical communications Vol.46 No.36

In this communication, the synthesis and characterization of thermo- and light responsive block copolymers is reported. PEO-b-PNIPAM polymers with azobenzene moieties were prepared and analyzed by turbidimetry, fluorescence, NMR and DLS measurements. A temperature controlled reversible formation as well as a light induced disruption and reformation of micellar structures in water was found.

Graphic Abstract

The synthesis of multi responsive block copolymers is reported, showing temperature and light controlled reversible formation and disruption of micelles.

Adequate nutrition in early life is proposed to shape a child’s future health by launching the growth trajectory in the proper direction, which helps to avoid negative metabolic programming effects. Protein intake during infancy and early childhood is of great importance, as it plays a key role in infant metabolic programming and the future risk of obesity. Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition in early life, with many benefits tailored for the baby, including the appropriate quantity and quality of proteins. Considering the high prevalence of childhood, and subsequent adult, obesity in the region, a virtual Middle East expert consensus meeting was held to discuss an effective approach for managing childhood obesity. Leading pediatric experts from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates participated in the meeting. The experts discussed, debated, and agreed on certain directions, including the importance of educating parents, endorsing breastfeeding, and ensuring optimum quantity and quality intake of proteins in early life. This expert consensus may serve as the starting point for healthcare professionals in the region who are interested in shaping a healthy future for the generations to come.
Lessons Learned: Art Education in an Expanded Field
Richard Jochum 한국국제미술교육학회 2017 미술과 교육 Vol.18 No.3
This article argues for the implementation of an expansive notion of art education that embraces the extraordinary potential of technologies as new art materials and encourages students to gain fluency and confidence in technology-infused art making. It is the outcome of a reflective-in-action research methodology, presenting select takeaways from 12 semesters spent teaching new media to pre-service teachers and collecting written feedback in the form of student blogs. The four “lessons” presented include the importance of stepping back from technology in order to re-approach it creatively, the power of making, the need to expose students to the vastness of technology in a variety of ways, and the value of making students stewards of their own learning.
Gold-wire artifacts on diagnostic radiographs: A case report
Johan Anton Jochum Keestra,Reinhilde Jacobs,Marc Quirynen 대한영상치의학회 2014 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.44 No.1
This report described a case in which diagnostic radiographs showed irregular dense radiopaque strings and curved lines in the head and neck area. These artifacts could lead to misinterpretation since they may obscure anatomical structures and/or mask critical structures/pathologies. A more detailed history of the patient indicated that these strings originated from a facelift procedure in which a gold-wire technique was used. Considering that such intervention may cause a radiodiagnostic burden, it should be included in the anamnesis prior to radiography.

Reactive surface coatings were used as an ideal precursor coating for the fabrication of three different photoswitchable surface coatings in parallel. Different light-responsive moieties, such as azobenzene, salicylideneaniline, and spiropyran, were immobilized on glass, polycarbonate, and steel surfaces. Independent from the underlying substrate, wettability could be switched reversibly by UV irradiation. The maximum switching range was obtained after functionalization of the reactive coating with spiropyran, resulting in a contact angle difference between the two isomeric states of almost 30°.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Nanotube Friendly Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)
Etika, Krishna C.,Jochum, Florian D.,Cox, Michael A.,Schattling, Philipp,Theato, Patrick,Grunlan, Jaime C. WILEY-VCH Verlag 2010 Macromolecular Rapid Communications Vol.31 No.15

Poly(N-ispropylacrylamide) [PNIPAM] is a widely studied polymer for use in biological applications due to its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) being so close to the human body temperature. Unfortunately, attempts to combine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with PNIPAM have been unsuccessful due to poor interactions between these two materials. In this work, a PNIPAM copolymer with 1 mol-% pyrene side group [p-PNIPAM] was used to produce a thermoresponsive polymer capable of stabilizing both single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in water. The presence of pyrene in the polymer chain lowers the LCST less than 4 °C and the interaction with nanotubes does not show any influence on LCST. Moreover, p-PNIPAM stabilized nanotubes show a temperature-dependent dispersion in water that allows the level of nanotube exfoliation/bundling to be controlled. Cryo-TEM images, turbidity, and viscosity of these suspensions were used to characterize these thermoresponsive changes. This ability to manipulate the dispersion state of CNTs in water with p-PNIPAM will likely benefit many biological applications, such as drug delivery, optical sensors, and hydrogels.

Graphic Abstract
Schematic of SWNT dispersion and bundling using thermoresponsive 1 mol-% pyrene functionalized poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide). At temperatures below the LCST, the polymer is soluble in water and assumes a more extended conformation, thereby providing steric hindrance for nanotube bundling. At higher temperatures, p-PNIPAM assumes a globular conformation resulting in decreased hindrance that results in nanotube bundling/networking.
