OBJECTIVES: The characteristics of depressive symptoms in the family members of home-dwelling patients with dementia have not been clearly reported. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of depressive symptoms in middle-aged family members living with a patient with dementia. METHODS: This study used the data from the nationwide 2017 Korea Community Health Survey. Among the 228,381 survey participants, 77,276 participants in their 40s and 50s were finally selected for this study. The participants consisted of 760 family members of home-dwelling dementia patients and 76,516 general family members comprising a control group. RESULTS: The positive rate of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)-measured depressive symptoms was significantly higher in the family members of home-dwelling dementia patients (4.4%; control group: 1.9%). After adjusting for potential confounders, the prevalence of PHQ-measured depressive symptoms was 1.72 times (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 2.85) higher in the family members of home-dwelling dementia patients compared to the control group. The positive rate of depressive symptoms was 2.26 times higher (95% CI, 1.26 to 4.05) in the female middle-aged family members of home-dwelling dementia patients compared to the control group. In addition, those who reported having symptoms almost every day in the PHQ-9 questions had significantly higher positive rates on questions about loss of interest, depression, sleep disturbance, fatigue, poor appetite, and suicidal ideation, and not on questions regarding feelings of worthlessness and psychomotor agitation, compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Active interventions are needed to relieve depression in the family members of home-dwelling dementia patients.
Expression of Stem Cell Markers in Primo Vessel of Rat

<P>Accumulating line of evidence support that adult tissues contain a rare population of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), which differentiate into all types of cells in our body. Bonghan microcell (primo microcells (PMCs)) discovered in 1960s was reported to have a pluripotency like a stem cell <I>in vivo</I> as well as <I>in vitro</I> condition. Here, we describe the detailed morphology and molecular features of PMCs. PMCs reside in Bonghan duct (primo vessel (PV)) reported as a corresponding structure of acupuncture points and meridian system. We found that PMCs were frequently observed in the liver surface of the rat between 300 g and 400 g from April to June, suggesting that the their detection frequency depends on the weight, the season, and the organ of rat. As reported, PMCs freshly isolated from PVs were spherical ~1-2 <I><I>μ</I></I>m microsized cells. In contrast, a unique bithread or budding-shaped PMCs emerged during tissue culture around 8 days. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that PVs-derived cells express the <I>Oct4</I>, the most important PSCs gene, in addition to several PSCs markers (<I>Sox2</I>, <I>Stella</I>, <I>Rex1</I>, and <I>Klf4</I>). Thus, we for the first time provide the evidence about Oct4-expressing stem-like characteristics for cells resident in PVs, a possible novel stem cell enriched niche.</P>
Advanced Gastric Cancer Perforation Mimicking Abdominal Wall Abscess
Cho, Jinbeom,Park, Ilyoung,Lee, Dosang,Sung, Kiyoung,Baek, Jongmin,Lee, Junhyun The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2015 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.15 No.3
Surgeons occasionally encounter a patient with a gastric cancer invading an adjacent organ, such as the pancreas, liver, or transverse colon. Although there is no established guideline for treatment of invasive gastric cancer, combined resection with radical gastrectomy is conventionally performed for curative purposes. We recently treated a patient with a large gastric cancer invading the abdominal wall, which was initially diagnosed as a simple abdominal wall abscess. Computed tomography showed that an abscess had formed adjacent to the greater curvature of the stomach. During surgery, we made an incision on the abdominal wall to drain the abscess, and performed curative total gastrectomy with partial excision of the involved abdominal wall. The patient received intensive treatment and wound management postoperatively with no surgery-related adverse events. However, the patient could not receive adjuvant chemotherapy and expired on the 82nd postoperative day.

This paper discusses the main requirements in today's full-color holograms illumination and evaluates the last generation of LEDs, the actual best light source to render properly the colors of the holograms and in particular those recorded with red 660 nm, green 532 nm and blue 440 nm lasers. This paper presents also the first prototype of lamp designed especially for this kind of holograms.

Aim: We aimed to investigate whether the smoking-free school-policy would be significantly associated with SHS exposure and to examine its impacts on SHS exposure compared to a smoking-free home-policy among community stakeholders. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Participants were 295 students, 141 school staffs, and 275 parents of the students recruited from five primary schools in Seoul, South Korea. We selected primary schools firstly by regional deprivation index and the degree of designation of smoking-free schools, and then recruited five primary schools who agreed to participate in the present study. SHS exposure was defined as any exposure from either in-school or out-school areas and assessed by using self-reported questionnaires. Results: Of the participants, 48.1% of students, 29.8% of school staffs, and 43.7% of parents were exposed to SHS. Students with a smoking-free school-policy had significantly lower SHS exposure rates than those without a smoking-free school-policy (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.070 – 0.681). Students with a smoking-free school-policy had significantly lower SHS exposure rates than those with a smoking-free home-policy (adjusted OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.063 – 0.794). Students with both smoking-free school and home-policies had significantly lower SHS exposure rates than those with a smoking-free home-policy only (adjusted OR = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.050 – 0.578). However, these associations were not apparent among other community stakeholders. Conclusions: The smoking-free school-policy may be effective, and even stronger on the reduction of SHS exposures than a smoking-free home-policy among students in primary schools.
