Management and control of coccidiosis in poultry - A review

        Rafiq Ahmad,Yu-Hsiang Yu,Kuo-Feng Hua,Wei-Jung Chen,Daniel Zaborski,Andrzej Dybus,Felix Shih-Hsiang Hsiao,Yeong-Hsiang Cheng Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2024 Animal Bioscience Vol.37 No.1

Poultry coccidiosis is an intestinal infection caused by an intracellular parasitic protozoan of the genus Eimeria. Coccidia-induced gastrointestinal inflammation results in large economic losses, hence finding methods to decrease its prevalence is critical for industry participants and academic researchers. It has been demonstrated that coccidiosis can be effectively controlled and managed by employing anticoccidial chemical compounds. However, as a result of their extensive use, anticoccidial drug resistance in Eimeria species has raised concerns. Phytochemical/herbal medicines (Artemisia annua, Bidens pilosa, and garlic) seem to be a promising strategy for preventing coccidiosis, in accordance with the "anticoccidial chemical-free" standards. The impact of herbal supplements on poultry coccidiosis is based on the reduction of oocyst output by preventing the proliferation and growth of Eimeria species in chicken gastrointestinal tissues and lowering intestinal permeability via increased epithelial turnover. This review provides a thorough up-to-date assessment of the state of the art and technologies in the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in chickens, including the most used phytochemical medications, their mode of action, and the applicable legal framework in the European Union.

      • Work competence of nurse aides" in a skill-mixed model hospital: the perspectives from both nurse aides and nurses

        Hsiang-Wen Kung,Hui-Chen Hsu,Bih-O Lee 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Aim(s): Nurse aides provide a major support for long-term care services. However, research findings regarding the various aspects of nurse aides’ work competence that may facilitate or impede their work performance remain inconsistent. To compare th-e differences between the nurse aides’ and registered nurses’ perceptions of the nurse aides’ work competence. Method(s): This study was designed as a cross-sectional study, and convenience sampling w-as employed to recruit a sample that comprised 220 nurse aides and registered nurs-es who had served for more than three months at a regional teaching hospitalin southern Taiwan. The instruments consisted of the demographic data and the 36-it-em Nurse Aides’ Work Competence Scale. Result(s): There are no significant differences between the self-perceived and the nurse-s’ reported overall work competence of nurse aides. The results showed that th-e nurse aides had room for improving their work competence in terms of “pro-blem solving” and “activity design”. The nurse aides and resisted nurses differe-d significantly in terms of “activity design” because the nurse aides’ perception of their work competence in “activity design” was more positive than that repo-rted by the registered nurses. Conclusion(s): Nurse aides should be incorporated into cross-disciplinary teams. Activity design could be handled by other healthcare providers such as physical therapists or senior social workers.

The Aspect Marker -Le in Early Child Mandarin

Hsiang-Hua Chang 세종대학교 언어연구소 2013 Journal of Universal Language Vol.14 No.1

Cross-linguistically, researchers have found a distributional bias of tense/aspect markers in child languages, namely, children initially use past or perfective morphology with telic predicates and use present or progressive morphology with atelic predicates. One attempt to explain this phenomenon is the Prototype Account, which argues that children acquire a linguistic category starting with the prototype of the category and later extend its application to less prototypical cases (Shirai & Andersen 1995). Based on the English data, they argue that children do not distinguish between past/perfective and telicity, which is the prototype for category past and category perfective. This study presents evidence from Mandarin data of two young children, which supports the distributional bias found in the older children in Li (1990), but opposes the Prototype Account given the fact that Mandarin-speaking children do not have a macro-category of past/perfective/telic marked by the perfective -le. The finding argues for (i) a separation between past and perfective/telic and a separation between perfective and telic in child Mandarin, (ii) the necessity to distinguish perfective -le from sentence final le, (iii) the legitimacy to treat Mandarin adjectives as stative verbs, and (iv) the importance to examine verbs appearing in their basic forms without aspect markers.

      • DO BRAND IMAGE AND COUNTRY OF MANUFACTUR AFFECT CONSUMERS’ PERCEPTION OF LUXURY BRAND AFTER M&AS?

        Hsiang-Ming Lee,Tsai Chen,Hong-Yew Lee 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.7

The purpose of this study is to examine the brand image and county of manufacture(COM) effect on brand luxury index, especially when the acquirer brand is afflicted by a low brand image and the acquired brand enjoys a high brand image. There were 248 responses in Taiwan (low image differences were gathered from 119 respondents and high image differences were gathered from 129 respondents). The results indicate that brand image have a positive influence on every dimension of brand luxury, while the better the luxury brand image acquired by one with an inferior image, the more the brand luxury will increase. Regarding the COM effect, the better COM image the acquirer move to, the more the brand luxury will increase. In addition, brand image and COM have interactive effect.

QCD theories of exclusive B dacays

Hsiang-nan Li 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.45 No.2

I review the progress made in QCD theories of exclusive B-meson decays, concentrating on QCDimproved factorization, perturbative QCD, light-cone sum rules, and soft-collinear effective theory. The fundamental concepts and the phenomenological implications on nonleptonic B meson decays from the above theories are compared. PACS numbers: 14.40.Nd

Mandarin Bare Classifier-Nouns: Towards a Universal Structure for Classifiers and Plurals

Hsiang-Hua Chang 세종대학교 언어연구소 2014 Journal of Universal Language Vol.15 No.1

Mandarin, as other classifier languages, usually requires a classifier when numerals, quantifiers, or demonstratives are present, but also allows bare classifier-nouns (CL-N) without any determiners. This paper examines two empirical questions: (i)What is the structure of CL-N that can account for its behavior? (ii) Under what conditions are bare CL-Ns acceptable? Following Borer’s Exo-Skeletal framework, I draw a parallel between Mandarin classifiers and the English plural. Mandarin ben shu‘CL book’ and English books both are CLASSIFIER PHRASES carrying no quantity information. Numeral-classifier-nouns (Num-CL-Ns), such as san ben shu ‘three books,’ are QUANTITY PHRASES carrying quantity information. This proposal correctly predicts that CL-Ns and Num-CL-Ns have different distributions due to different structures. Supporting data are drawn from CL-Ns in argument and non-argument positions in various constructions to attest the prediction that when the quantity information is needed in the discourse, Num-CL-Ns will be obligatory; in contrast, when the quantity information is not crucial, CL-Ns will be preferred or obligatory.

Rapid screening of roundup ready soybean in food samples by a hand-held PCR device

        Hsiang-Yun Tung,Sue-Hong Wang,Yu-Cheng Chiang,Ming-Shiun Tsai 한국식품과학회 2016 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.25 No.4

Insulated isothermal PCR (iiPCR) method was recently available for rapid on-site detection ofroundup ready soybean (RRS; event GTS40-3-2) in food materials and products. Performance of thismethod was evaluated in this study. The 100% detection endpoint for the RRS by iiPCR was found insamples containing 0.1% RRS, equivalent to the results of the reference real-time PCR (rtPCR). Analysisof nucleic acids of soybean-based processed food products indicated 95% agreement between the iiPCRand rtPCR for RRS detection. By testing soybean milk and tofu samples using simple pretreatmentmethods, we found that the agreements between iiPCR and rtPCR methods of the aforementionedsamples were 80% and 90%, respectively. Replicated tests of all discrepant samples implied that thesesamples had trace amounts of RRS, suggesting that the iiPCR system is more sensitive than the rtPCRmethod. In conclusion, the iiPCR technology can be a useful point-of-need tool to help make a timelydecision in the consumption of genetically modified organisms.
