      • Abstract : The Power and Limitations of Synchrotron X-rays in Agro-Environmental Research

Vol.2012 No.2

High-intensity synchrotron x-rays provide some of the most advanced analytical tools for studying soils. Nevertheless, the extreme complexity of soils across all spatial scales - from landscapes to molecules - challenges our ability to use these advanced measurements in management decisions that optimize crop nutrition while protecting the environment. This presentation will introduce the technique of synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and discuss its advantages for analyzing chemical species of trace elements (and nutrients) in soils, and its limitations for such complex systems. Synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopy provides chemical-speciation information about average oxidation states and average local molecular coordination environments of individual soil elements, even at part-per-million concentrations. However, in such complex matrices, the specificity of the technique is lost because of the large number of possible (and measured) chemical species present. Technological advances have provided spatially resolving x-ray microprobes that can be applied at smaller and smaller (submicron) spatial scales, which is advantageous for identifying a subset of chemical species within heterogeneous subunits of soils (microsites). A new concept of soil chemistry - the reactive microsite model - proposes that chemical speciation and chemical microenvironments must be understood to predict reactivity. Future developments of chemical-specific analytical tools with high spatial resolution provide opportunities for experimentally assessing real-time transformations of environmental contaminants within soil matrices.

Vol.- No.45

This study pays attention to the fact that North Korea's ICT industry-related legal system and policies since Kim Jong-un took office are based on ‘transition to a knowledge economy’ through ‘making all people well-versed in science and technology’. Above all else, the ‘theory of making all people well-versed in science and technology’ emphasizes the existing revolutionary succession and the cultivation of “more and faster” manpower. It is understood as a shift to a future-oriented perspective that seeks innovation with a focus on human resource development. Therefore, the manpower training laws and policies based on ‘making all people well-versed in science and technology’ can be viewed as a stepping stone for North Korea to take a new leap forward, and the results of the implementation of the related policies are highly likely to bring about many changes both internally and externally. In particular, if sanctions against North Korea are eased/removed, the nurturing of North Korea’s ICT industry-related manpower and the expansion of professional skills and knowledge can be accelerated. Accordingly, this study analyzes the laws and policies related to the ICT industry, dividing them by period of economic policy transition. In addition, the estimated size of ICT manpower centered on the software industry and social capacity are viewed in estimable categories. The study attempts to provide basic data that can contribute to the revitalization of inter-Korean economic cooperation in the future.

Sport as a Means of Empowerment for Korean Women

Vol.24 No.2

This paper sets out to discuss the utilization of sport based female empowerment initiatives as a method of mitigating Korea’s Confucian-based gender roles. The main aim of this paper is to examine how empowering Korean women through sport initiatives could help nullify Confucius-based gender roles and ideologies in Korean society. To achieve this aim, the following three objectives were addressed. First, women’s current gender roles were examined through the context of Korean Confucianism and the function it plays regarding gender roles in Korean society. Second, sociocultural, sociostructural, patriarchal and cultural theories were used as a theoretical framework to explore women’s traditional and evolving social roles relative to men. Last, before implementing a sport based empowerment program, the validity of such programs was examined through a literature review of existing entities such as the program titled Women Win. Analysis of the existing programs and their frameworks were pivotal to the exploration of possible empowerment initiatives in South Korea. The results of this paper show that Korean empowerment programs could help female participants empower themselves. However, difficulties such as Confucian-based gender roles, hierarchy of speech, age based status and in group out group social circles will need to be addressed according to Korean sociocultural needs.

An Ethical Approach to the KBO Regulation of the Number of Foreign Players in Relation to Fair Play

Vol.24 No.1

This essay analyzes the restriction of foreign players in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) through the work of scholars Butcher and Schneider’s (1998) position regarding fair play as “respect for the game”. The main question of inquiry focused on the limitation of 3 foreign players per team and whether this rule can stand up to scrutiny when analyzed under the concept of fair play as described by Butcher and Schneider. Previous work has failed to look at the limitation of foreign players through the specific circumstances of the KBO while applying the ethical concepts of fair play and its components. The concept of Butcher and Schneider’s position regarding fair play was broken down according to their conclusion of fair play as “respect for the game” and the two components it is comprised of; elements of players perspective and the KBO’s governing bodies responsibilities. Conditions of respect for the game provided by scholars Morgan and Meier (1988) were also referenced and found to be personified in the KBO league such as contestants should be evenly matched and the contestants must have a high degree of skill. The conclusion of this essay is that KBO’s rule restricting foreigners was found to be within the bounds of fair play as described by the scholarly work of Butcher and Schneider. The analysis of fair play and the KBO is important as Korea is becoming more diverse and this author believes only through moral evaluation of existing systems and rules can we prevent forthcoming issues.

At the Center of the Kingdom

2009 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.16

The recent cinematic portrayal of P. D. James’ novel Children of Men raises particularly stark images of a society bereft of children. What happens to the social order when children remain “absent” from the lives of adults? By extension, happens when children are “absent” from congregational situations, or at least considered invisible, to the spiritual practices at hand? The following article revises current definitions of children’s spirituality by offering Trinitarian view for shaping congregational practice around the presence of “with” children as participating agents who, according to the gospel of Luke remain “at the Center of the Kingdom of God. Critiquing views that reduce children to something incomplete as human beings, the article builds upon Robert Coles and Martin Marty’s exceptional but intricate theoretical observations around the “mystery” of the child. The article closes by providing one example of the very place of children in shaping the “heart cries” of prayer within the life of the congregation.

Empowering Students for Learning and Ministry

2006 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.10

One of the central goals of global Christian education is the empowerment of students for the sake of serving in ministry. Christian religious educators take into consideration preparation, cultural differences, economic challenges, learning styles, outcomes, and the ministry that students face. This article seeks more than what teachers do for students and addresses what educators must do with and through students. The challenge of empowering students to become life long learners for the sake of serving is discussed. Three areas of empowerment are based on the teacher's calling, student's calling and sound educational theory. Developing empowering education involves providing community, facilitating educational discernment, and transforming the world through a vision of the kingdom of God.

Mischief or Mayhem? A Theology of Childhood Misdeeds and the Church

2008 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.14

The place of children in worship, and other aspects of congregational life, appears to have diminished in recent generations due in part to perceived childish distractions, often demeaned as mischief. However, children’s workers might perceive child mischief as a theological or “saintly” gift, embodied in play theory and ritual practice, whereby children playfully challenge adult boundaries so that new aspects of the Kingdom of God might be revealed in the church. Ministers might argue for the presence of children in the life of the congregation as necessary not only for children but also for the sake of adults.

Stabilizing breathing pattern using local mechanical vibrations: comparison of deterministic and stochastic stimulations in rodent models of apnea of prematurity

        Dean Zeldich,Samer Bou Jawde,Jacob Herrmann,Leen Arnaout,Meghan Griffin,Noam Grunfeld,Yu Zhang,Ramaswamy Krishnan,Erzsébet Bartolák-Suki,Béla Suki 대한의용생체공학회 2021 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.11 No.4

Mechanical stimulation has been shown to reduce apnea of prematurity (AOP), a major concern in preterm infants. Previous work suggested that the underlying mechanism is stochastic resonance, amplification of a subthreshold signal by stochastic stimulation. We hypothesized that the mechanism behind the reduction of apnea length may not be a solely stochastic phenomenon, and suggest that a purely deterministic, non-random mechanical stimulation could be equally as effective. Mice and rats were anesthetized, tracheostomized, and mechanically ventilated to halt spontaneous breathing. Two miniature motors controlled by a microcontroller were attached around the abdomen. Ventilation was paused, stimulations were applied, and the time to the rodent’s first spontaneous breath (T) was measured. Six spectrally different signals were compared to one another and the no-stimulation control in mice. The most successful deterministic stimulation (D) at reducing apnea was then compared to a pseudo-random noise (PRN) signal of comparable amplitude and frequency. CO2%, CO2 stabilization time (Ts), O2 saturation (SpO2%), and T were also measured. D significantly reduced T compared to no stimulation for medium and high amplitudes. PRN also reduced T, without a difference between D and PRN. Furthermore, both stimulations significantly reduced Ts with no significant differences between the respective stimulations. However, there was no effect of D or PRN on SpO2%. The lack of differences between D and PRN led to an additional series of experiment comparing the same D to a band-limited white noise (WN) signal in young rats. Both D and WN were shown to significantly reduce T, with D showing statistical superiority in reduction of apnea. We further speculate that both deterministic and stochastic mechanical stimulations induce some form of mechanotransduction which is responsible for their efficacy, and our findings suggest that mechanical stimulation may be effective in treating AOP.

A Case Study in the Development of Codes of Ethics in Korean Collegiate Athletics

Vol.25 No.1

This research examined the ethical guidelines mandated by the American College Athletic Association`s (NCAA) and different cases of ethical codes of conduct at Clemson University, Ohio State University, and Pennsylvania State University. The purpose of this study is to clarify the developmental process, method, composition and contents of these projects as a means to develop Korean university sports ethics codes of conduct. To achieve these objectives, the concept, necessities, and purpose of the college sports ethics code was examined based on related literature. Case studies of American universities and their individual development of ethical codes of conduct and the NCAA`s development and implementation of ethical codes of conduct for schools were analyzed according to their differences of structure, form, contents, roles and background. Finally, based on the results and values of this analysis, a framework was drafted and proposed with the goal of developing an ethical code of conduct for Korean universities. As a means for broadening the experiences of student-athletes and university affiliates, the drafted code of conduct discusses responsibilities, duties, issues of fair play, and sportsmanship for starting in the right direction.
