        A Study of Cultural Openness and Attitudes towards Global Brands among Chinese Consumers

        The purpose of this research is to investigate how cultural openness influences Chinese consumers’ attitudes towards global brands. This study further examines the moderating role of perceived brand quality and conspicuous consumption on the relationship between consumer cultural openness and attitudes towards global brands. Data was collected by conducting a survey among consumers in China. Linear regression was employed to examine the main effects of cultural openness and attitudes towards global brands. To test the moderating effects of perceived brand quality and conspicuous consumption, the PROCESS Macro model 1 was used. The results of this study show that consumers’ cultural openness positively influences their attitudes towards global brands while this effect is moderated by conspicuous consumption, with the positive influence of cultural openness strengthening for individuals with higher levels of conspicuous consumption. Additionally, the findings indicate that consumer perceptions of brand quality play a moderating role in the relationship between cultural openness and attitudes, resulting in a negative effect for consumers with high perceived brand quality. This research makes a valuable contribution to the field of international business and global marketing by exploring the relationships between consumer cultural factors and attitudes towards global brands. Additionally, the findings of this study provide international brand managers operating in developing markets meaningful insights when targeting specific market segments.

      • The Effect of Conspicuous Consumption on Consumer Purchase Intention: The Mediating Role of Perceived Value

        Purpose - The rapid recent growth of China’s economy and the emergence of a global consumer culture have increased conspicuous consumption among Chinese consumers. This research investigates how conspicuous consumption influences Chinese consumers’ purchase intentions toward global brands as mediated by perceived brand value. Design/Methodology/Approach - Data were collected through the conduct of a survey among Chinese consumers. The PROCESS Macro model was used to test the mediating effects of perceived functional, social, and emotional value. Findings - The study found that Chinese consumers with conspicuous consumption tendencies possess positive purchase intentions toward global brands. Study 1 indicated that consumers’ perceived social and emotional value mediates the relationship between conspicuous consumption and purchase intention for hedonic products. For utilitarian products, Study 2 showed that the relationship is mediated by consumers’ perceived functional and emotional value. Perceived emotional value plays a critical role in the relationship between conspicuous consumption and purchase intention for both product types. Research Implications - This study contributes to the scarce literature about the positive relationship between conspicuous consumption and global brands in emerging markets. Marketing strategies in emerging markets should concentrate on status-related consumption and market segmentation. These findings are expected to contribute to international marketing and global brand management, providing valuable insights into the purchasing motives of consumers for global brands.

        Identification of putative ingestion‑related olfactory receptor genes in the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir japonica sinensis)

        Background Olfaction plays a central role in mating, spawning, obtaining food and escaping predators, which is essential for survival and reproduction of animals. The nature of the olfactory perception in crabs, which is a major group of crustaceans, has remained elusive. Objective This project aims to explore the molecular mechanism of olfaction in crabs and further improve our understanding of olfactory perception in crustaceans. Methods The olfactory receptors and ingestion-related gene expression in Eriocheir japonica sinensis were studied by transcriptomic techniques. The de novo assembly, annotation and functional evaluation were performed with bioinformatics tools. Results A series of chemosensory receptors associated with olfaction were identifed including 33 EsIRs, 24 EsIGluRs, 58 EsVIGluRs, 1 EsOR and 1 EsGC-D. We found IRs were key odorant receptors demonstrating a specifc species evolutionary trend in crustaceans. Furthermore, we identifed ORs in E. j. sinensis and Litopenaeus vannamei. The incomplete EsOR and LvOR1 structures implied that ORs exist in crustaceans, and may have been degenerated or even lost in the olfactory evolutionary process. In addition, comparative transcriptome analysises demonstrated two possible olfactory transduction pathways of E. j. sinensis: the cGMP-mediated olfactory pathway related to vegetable odor molecules and the cAMP-mediated olfactory pathway related to meat odor molecules. The above results were consistent with its omnivorous ingestion of E. j. sinensis. Conclusions Our study revealed the unique olfactory molecular mechanism of omnivorous crabs and provided valuable information for further functional research on the chemoreception mechanisms in crustaceans.

        Enhanced proton conductivity of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes at elevated temperature by incorporating (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane-grafted graphene oxide

        Making inexpensive proton exchange membrane with high proton conductivity for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is still a challenging problem. Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles grafted with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxy silane (APTES) were prepared and then incorporated into sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) matrix by solution casting to make the composite proton exchange membrane. The obtained nanoparticles and composite membranes were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman, TGA, SEM, and UTM. GO treated with the silane coupling agent improved the dispersion stability and compatibility of GO in SPEEK, which decreased the agglomeration of GO nanoparticles in the SPEEK membrane. The prepared nanocomposite membranes exhibited better water retention properties and proton conductivity. The proton conductivity of the SPEEK membrane with 2wt% amine functionalized GO (AGO) reached 11.32mS/cm at 120oC, which was 2.45-times higher than that of the pristine SPEEK membrane. The reason was that AGO nanoparticles disperse uniformly in the SPEEK membranes, which provides new channels for proton transfer. The potential application of this composite membrane in the PEMFC was indicated.

        Breakup dynamics and scaling laws of liquid metal droplets formed in a cross junction

        The formation of liquid metal droplets in a microfluidic cross junction with different viscosities of thecontinuous phase is experimentally and theoretically investigated. The flow pattern is distinguished intosqueezing and dripping by the presence of gaps. The differences in driving forces between the two patternsare analyzed theoretically and confirmed experimentally by Micro-PIV results. Roles of the squeezingforce and the shear force in droplet formation are varying due to the dynamic evolutions of the gapwidth which reduces with time. Therefore, critical values of the initial gap width are obtained which arethe outcome of the competition between neck thinning and tip growing. Compared to water–oil systems,gaps are more difficult to be formed due to the extremely high interfacial tension. Moreover, universalflow pattern maps are constructed using dimensionless parameters of Wed, Cac, and Rec, proving theimportant roles of both the squeezing force and the shear force. A scaling law of the droplet volume consideringthe influence of the viscosity ratio is proposed and a very good agreement between experimentaldata and theoretical predictions is obtained for different liquid systems.

        Dynamics of droplet breakup in unilateral Y-junctions with different angles

        Dynamic behaviors of droplets in asymmetric unilateral Y-junctions are experimentally studied. Threebreakup regimes are categorized, namely no breakup, breakup with gaps and breakup with obstruction,and regime diagrams are constructed by the capillary number and the normalized droplet length. Influences of the bifurcation angle and the viscosity ratio on the two critical conditions between neighboringregimes are revealed. In particular, necking processes in the obstructed breakup regime are discussedand they are divided into three stages according to the evolution of the thinning rate. At thetwo previous stages driven by the two-phase flow, the necking processes show distinct characteristicsunder the influences of four different parameters, including capillary number, droplet length, viscosityratio, and bifurcation angle, and the corresponding reasons are provided in detail. By contrast, the finalpinch-off stage is driven by two different mechanisms depending merely on the physical properties ofliquid systems. The neck collapsing of the low-viscosity droplet is driven by the potential flow while thatof the high-viscosity droplet is driven by the two-fluid Stokes flow. Quantitative relations between theminimum neck width and the remaining time are built in the two situations and are found to coincidewith the theoretical predictions, respectively.

        Simultaneous Multiplexed Detection of Protein and Metal Ions by a Colorimetric Microfluidic Paper-based Analytical Device

        In order to improve the efficiency of disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, it is desirable to detect the concentration of proteins and metal ions simultaneously, since the current popular diagnostic platform can only detect proteins or metal ions independently. In this work, we developed a colorimetric microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for simultaneous determination of protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) and metal ions [Fe(III) and Ni(II)]. The μPAD consisted of one central zone, ten reaction zones and ten detection zones in one device, in which reaction solutions were effectively optimized for different types of chromogenic reactions. Fe(III), Ni(II) and BSA can be easily identified by the colored products, and their concentrations are in good accordance with color depth based on the established standard curves. The detection limits are 0.1 mM for Fe(III), 0.5 mM for Ni(II) and 1μM for BSA, respectively. Best of all, we demonstrated the efficiency of the μPAD with accurate detection of Fe(III), Ni (II) and BSA from river water samples within 15 minutes. The μPAD detection is efficient, instrument-free, and easy-to-use, holding great potential for simultaneous detection of cross type analytes in numerous diagnostic fields.

        Efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemotherapy versus primary debulking surgery in patients with ovarian cancer: a meta-analysis

        Objective: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for the treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) has remained controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to systematically assess the efficacy and safety of NACT versus primary debulking surgery (PDS) in patients with EOC. Methods: PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane Library were queried to assess the therapeutic value of NACT versus PDS in EOC. Electronic databases were queried by using the keywords “ovarian cancer/neoplasms”, “primary debulking surgery”, and “neoadjuvant chemotherapy”. Results: The available trials were pooled, and hazard ratios (HRs), relative risk ratios (RRs) and associated 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were determined. Sixteen trials involving 57,450 participants with EOC (NACT, 9,475; PDS, 47,975) were evaluated. We found that NACT resulted in markedly decreased overall survival than PDS in patients with EOC (HR=1.30; 95% CI=1.13–1.49; heterogeneity: p<0.001, I2=82.7%). Furthermore, our results demonstrated that the NACT group displayed increased completeness of debulking removal (RR=1.69, 95% CI=1.32–2.17; heterogeneity: p<0.001, I2=81.9%), and reduced risk of postsurgical death (RR=0.18, 95% CI=0.06–0.51; heterogeneity: p=0.698, I2=0%) and major infection (RR=0.29, 95% CI=0.17–0.51; heterogeneity: p=0.777, I2=0%) compared with patients administered PDS. Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicated that NACT results in increased completeness of debulking removal, and reduced risk of postsurgical death and major infection compared with PDS, while PDS is associated with improved survival in comparison with NACT in EOC patients.       • Computational Evaluation and Quantitative Analysis of the Impact Factor of Large-Scale Events: A Case Study of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo

        本文选择上海GDP 作为经济指标,对上海世博会对上海经济的影响进行了计算评价和定量分析。首先,对上海世博会对上海GDP 的影响进行纵向评价。建立了上海世博会对其GDP 影响的周期性增长趋势模型。其次,对上海世博会对上海GDP 的影响进行横向评价。本文随机选取八届世博会和上海世博会作为研究对象。五个可衡量的指标是参展国家、参观人数、展览面积和上海世博会前后的GDP情况。通过模糊聚类分析,得到了上海世博会对上海GDP 影响的横向评价模型。利用模糊C 均值聚类算法(FCA),得出上海世博会与大阪世博会属于同一类别的结论。 This paper conducts a computational evaluation and quantitative analysis of the impact of the Shanghai Expo on the economy of Shanghai, utilizing Shanghai’s GDP as the primary economic indicator. Initially, a vertical assessment of the Shanghai Expo’s influence on Shanghai’s GDP is undertaken, establishing a trend model that shows a periodic increase in the Expo’s impact on GDP. Subsequently, a horizontal evaluation of the Shanghai Expo’s impact on Shanghai’s GDP is performed, focusing on the Shanghai Expo alongside eight other Expos as research subjects. Five measurable indicators—participating countries, attendance numbers, exhibition area, and pre- and post-Shanghai Expo GDP situations—are selected for analysis. Utilizing fuzzy clustering analysis, a horizontal impact evaluation model of the Shanghai Expo on Shanghai’s GDP is developed. The study concludes that the Shanghai Expo and the Osaka Expo fall within the same classification using the Fuzzy C-mean Clustering Algorithm (FCA).
