Sphingosine 1-Phosphate and Sphingosine Kinase Activity during Chicken Embryonic Development

The chicken embryo has been well used in studies of the developmental process, and during development sphingosine and sphingosine 1-phosphate (So1P) are considered critical mediators of cell death and survival. In this study, we compared the sphingolipid contents of chicken embryos during the early embryonic development period from day 3 to day 6. HPLC analyses of sphingosine and So1P in chicken embryos revealed that sphingosine levels were greatly reduced on day 4 whereas So1P levels were not significantly changed. Sphingosine kinase (Sphk) activities, which require sphingosine as substrate to produce So1P, were also greatly reduced on day 4. Collectively, we found sphingosine levels and Sphk activities, but not So1P levels are changed in early stage of chicken embryos development.

Reye syndrome is a disorder of unknown etiology in which a child recovering form a viral prodrome suddenly develops pernicious vomiting & eventually develops neurologic changes. The syndrome is defined to acute noninflammatory encephalopathy with fatty degeneration of liver and other organs. The coagulopathy or Reye syndrome is associated with proloned PT caused by the mitochondrial injury compromising synthesis of proteins and clotting factors in liver. In this case, we observed ICH on right parietal and occipital area in brain CT. Actually, bleeding in the major organ is extremely rare in Reye syndrome, this may be the first case report of CNS bleeding in Korea associated with Reye syndrome. In addition to case report, we present a brief review of the related literatures.

The purpose of this study is to estimate clinical diagnosis using incremental treadmill exercise test, HR of the normal subjects linearly increases to the predicted maximal values as VO₂ increases. In contrast, CAD, PVD, sarcoidosis, and IPF patients showed non-linear data. For those in the normal subjects, their VCO₂ linearly increases in respect to VO₂. Also, the HR of the normal subjects linearly depended on intensity of exercise until they reach the predicted maximal heart rate, but PAD and COPD patients has lower increase rate of HR. O₂ pulse(VO₂/HR) of the normal subjects gradually increases to the predicted normal value while CAD patients with myocardial ischemia symptoms don’t show any changes. When PaCO₂ is normal, VE/VO₂ keeps falling and nadir reach less than 28 in AT. VE/CO₂ reach a nadir in ventilator compensation point and it is less than 32. CAD, PAD, and obesity patients’ VE/VO₂ and the nadir values of VE/CO₂ tend to be normal. But, IPF patients(symptoms with chronic heart failure, PVD, COPD, sarcoidosis, and VD/VT increase) have high nadir values.

Objective : Our purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the transcatheter arterial embolization for the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods : 14 patients with massive or recurrent uterine bleeding underwent percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization between February 2003 and September 2004. We reviewed 14 cases of uterine artery or internal iliac artery embolization using gelfoam or PVA particles. Results : Good management of uterine bleeding was achieved in 13 of 14(93%) cases. The cause of abnormal uterine bleeding was myoma(5 case), post D & E bleeding(3), acquired vascular malformation(3), pseudoaneurysm(1), adenomyosis(1), and endometrial hyperplasia(1). Conclusion : Transcatheter artery embolization is an effective and life-saving procedure in massive or recurrent uterine bleeding. Early diagnosis and prompt transcatheter arterial embolization is a useful mangement of uterine bleeding.

Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effect of PC6 and SP4 on autonomic nerve system in healthy adults. Methods : 22 healthy adults were recruited and randomized into the study group or control group. The study group (real acupuncture group) was acupuncturcd on PC6 and SP4. The control group (sham acupuncture group) was acupunctured superficially near PC6 and SP4 but not the exact points. The subjects rested for 10 minutes, and were then acupunctured. After 15 minutes, acupuncture needles were removed and the subjects rested for another 15 minutes. Heart rate variability(HRV) was continuously measured during the study period by FM-150 (digital Holter ECG recorder). Results : In the real acupuncture group. LF(low frequency) significantly decreased during the acupuncture period(p<0.05). LF/HF ratio also had a significant decrease during acupuncture period and the decrease was maintained during the post-treatment period as compared with the pre-treatment period. In the sham acupuncture group. LF significantly increased during the acupuncture period but LF/HF ratio had no significant changes. Conclusions : The results suggest that acupuncture on PC6 and SP4 can increase parasympathetic activity and balance autonomic nervous system.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.
Imaging of Functional Network Properties in Intractable Epilepsy Based on Neural Signal Analysis

Precise localization of epileptogenic zones is of great clinical importance for successful surgery in patients with intractable drug-resistant epilepsy. Among various neuroimaging techniques, scalp electroencephalography (EEG), intracranial EEG (iEEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) have been extensively used for the identification of epileptogenic zones because these techniques can record both ictal and interictal epileptiform activities with millisecond temporal resolutions. However, despite the rapid developments of computational EEG analysis methods, defining and localizing the epileptogenic zones in epilepsy patients is still an open question. During past decades, many researchers have been trying to differentiate the ictal onset zone which initiates seizures with cortical areas activated by propagations through network connections of a specific brain region. To this end, various functional connectivity measures have been applied to a number of ictal/interictal EEG, MEG, and iEEG datasets, demonstrated that they could be useful auxiliary tools to uncover the underlying cortical dynamics in the epileptic brain. In this paper, the author will introduce some of our recent studies on the localization of epileptogenic zones in intractable epilepsy patients, particularly focusing on those with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).
Magnetoencephalography cortical source imaging using spherical mapping

This paper proposes a novel approach to enhancing results of magnetoencephalography cortical source imaging. The proposed approach utilizes bell-shaped functions defined on an inflated cortical surface, which has one-to-one correspondence with original tessellated cortical surface. The coefficients of the functions are then determined using sensitivity analysis with conjugate gradient updating scheme. Applications of the approach to a simulation study and a practical experiment have resulted in more stable and smoother brain source distribution, compared to conventional linear inverse approach.
