Vol.49 No.4

The essay attempts to explain the significance and effect of theatrical presence of Jews on the early modern English stage by discussing Christopher Marlowe’s Jew of Malta and William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in particular. To understand theatrical presences of Jews, the essay discusses the absence of real or official Jews in the sixteenth century England, as a result of the early banishment of them from the land since 1290 under the reign of Edward I. The absence of real object rather produced unrealistically exaggerated and fantasized stereotypical images of Jewish people, readily adopted by contemporary playwrights as an emblem of evil and alien. Furthermore, the actual case of Dr. Lopez, a Marano physician, accused for attempting to poison the Queen in 1594, brought a synergic effect of the popularity of the plays as well as the execution of Dr. Lopez. To conclude what effects the Jew plays had on the Elizabethan audience, the essay discusses genre discourses around The Jew of Malta and The Merchant of Venice, often fluctuating between tragedy and comedy. Not conforming to conventional genre classifications, I suggest relocating the plays as a sheer entertainment corresponding to contemporary sports, wrestling, focusing on each play’s theatrical strength, competition like plotline between evil aliens, and finally pleasure provided although not necessarily siding with one. The fictional representation of Barabas and Shylock might have delivered pleasure to the audience by repetitive displays of their suffering, desperate struggle, proficient skills to revenge, and catastrophic defeat in the end. Stage Jews present a capable enemy worth fighting against and a notoriously powerful sports player that sells in early modern England.

Retelling Silence, Rewriting Experience: Production and Reproduction of Anne Askew`s Examinations

Vol.14 No.2

The essay examines two different editions of Anne Askew`s Examinations published in the sixteenth century: John Bale`s the First Examination and the Latter Examination and John Foxe`s Acts and Monuments, and argues that retelling and rewriting one`s experience is the process of storytelling that necessitates the repetition and communication of the experience. The essay looks at the parts the sixteenth-century editors particularly rewrote or retold the original version, and discusses how Askew`s story was retold, repeated, and communicated through various storytellers who delivered not only the original text but also the original experience toward larger audience. While attempting to interpret, analyze, and expand on the story she did not tell, or the story she could not tell, Bale and Foxe developed her personal and anecdotal story into a communal narrative to share. Bale wrote a weak woman`s martyrology by adding his interpretation and analysis, showing the way for the readers to follow in understanding her enigmatic silence and gestures. On the other hand, Foxe made the story a more dramatic and more seamlessly flowing narrative of the heroic sacrifice of a martyr. Foxe filled the room left by Askew`s silence with directly quoted conversations and the graphic that could help explain what was between the lines. Apart from the rewritings of the reformists, the essay focuses on the fact that the editing, rearranging, and reinterpreting process already started with Askew`s own writing. Although Askew declares herself an objective recorder of the series of events, her writing is carefully constructed with complex ideological fractures and rhetorical tactics, and her experience is tailored to fit a particular purpose. Along with Bale`s and Foxe`s rewritings, Askew`s story of a reading woman should be also read as an intentional and interpretative storytelling on her own experience.

Vol.25 No.3

Hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinuria syndrome (HHH syndrome) is a neurometabolic disorder with highly variable clinical severity ranging from mild learning disability to severe encephalopathy. Diagnosis of HHH syndrome can easily be delayed or misdiagnosed due to insidious symptoms and incomplete biochemical findings, in that case, genetic testing should be considered to confirm the diagnosis. HHH syndrome is caused by biallelic mutations of SLC25A15, which is involved in the urea cycle and the ornithine transport into mitochondria. Here we report a boy with spastic paraplegia and asymptomatic younger sister who have compound heterozygous mutations of c.535C>T (p.R179*) and c.116C>A (p.T39K) in the SLC25A15 gene. We identified that p.T39K mutation is a novel pathogenic mutation causing HHH syndrome and that p.R179*, which is prevalent in Japanese and Middle Eastern heritage, is also found in the Korean population.

      • Neurological Outcome of Patients with Late-onset Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency

Jang, Kyung Mi,Hwang, Su-Kyeong The Korea Society of Inherited Metabolic Disease Vol.22 No.1

The most common urea cycle disorder is ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. More than 80 percent of patients with symptomatic ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency are late-onset, which can present various phenotypes from infancy to adulthood. With no regards to the severity of the disease, characteristic fluctuating courses due to hyperammonemia may develop unexpectedly, and can be precipitated by various metabolic stressors. Late-onset ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency is not merely related to a type of genetic variation, but also to the complex relationship between genetic and environmental factors that result in hyperammonemia; therefore, it is difficult to predict the prevalence of neurological symptoms in late-onset ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. Most common acute neurological manifestations include psychological changes, seizures, cerebral edema, and death; subacute neurological manifestations include developmental delays, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, executive function deficits, and emotional and behavioral problems. This review aims to increase awareness of late-onset ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, allowing for an efficient use of biochemical and genetic tests available for diagnosis, ultimately leading to earlier treatment of patients.

Vol.0 No.46

2011년 출시된 보드게임 〈캔터베리로 가는 길〉(The Road to Canterbury)은 영국문학의 고전, 『캔터베리 이야기』(The Canterbury Tales, 1387)에 착안하여 고안되었다. The board game, 〈The Road to Canterbury〉 has been designed in 2011 based on English classic literature, The Canterbury Tales, a medieval poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the fourteenth century. As the game has been developed through a classic literature, it might be natural to expect its educational usefulness for English language and/or English literature. However, the educational potential the game provides is more than to encourage better understanding of language and literature but to help study and directly experience of the cultural, social and economical issues and, furthermore, political dynamics between them. This is because 〈The Road to Canterbury〉 adopts not only narrative characteristics but also gaming or role-playing characteristics of the original contents. This study analyzes narrative characteristics and role-playing game aspect of 〈The Road to Canterbury〉 and discusses interdisciplinary potential the game demonstrates. 〈The Road to Canterbury〉 not only provides historical knowledge on Medieval England and Roman Catholic Church but also presents chances to experience festivity the medieval oral folklore tradition promises. Also, the game assumes the player to take the role of pardoner of medieval England, the one who is supposed to think strategically in order to sell the indulgence effectively. This study focuses on the role-playing players’ perspective and their storytelling structured through inevitable double-sidedness and strategic narrative the role requires, and finally suggests educational possibilities and diverse appropriation potential role-playing board game represents.

2005 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.8 No.1

Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in early childhood and characterized by periodic colicky abdominal pain or irritability, vomiting, current jelly stool, and sausage-like abdominal mass. Meckel's diverticulum is common intestinal anomaly presenting with painless rectal bleeding during first 2 year of age. It is recognized as a common leading point of intussusception in childhood. Hematemesis is the rare clinical manifestation of both intussusception and Meckel's diverticulum. A 7-year-old girl presented with hematemesis was diagnosed as having intussusception by abdominal ultrasonography. Meckel's diverticulum was the leading point of intussusception in this case.

Vol.22 No.2

This study suggests applying Storytelling Theater as a pedagogical approach for college-level drama classroom in English Literature Department. While minimizing out-of-class activities to lessen the burden students might have felt about drama classes, but still encouraging them to understand and experience the performative imagination or directorial intention embedded in dramatic scripts, we propose to utilize Storytelling Theater as an initial step to introduce the plays that are considered “too difficult” or “too distant” for the contemporary college students. Converging Paul Sill’s Story Theater, Physical Theater developed in America and newly emerged Storytelling tradition in England, we designed a class module incorporating narration play, choral speak and storytelling theater. To experiment its effectiveness for English major students, we chose a medieval morality play, Everyman, as a specimen text and conducted a Storytelling Theater workshop to check how it promoted students’ understanding of the play’s theme, technique and purpose. The participants demonstrated a better understanding of the role of Medieval ‘educational theater,’ experienced actual practice with the concept of allegory, and picked up the crucial themes that could be improved for more sophisticated discussion. Storytelling theater might not be the best or the only pedagogical solution to improve current drama classes taught in English department, but instructors might want to consider its strengths and loopholes to keep the balance between literary and theatrical education while teaching dramatic literature for English majors.
