In this paper we will present our invention which is an improvement on the white cane used by the visually impaired. Our aim is to develop and manufacture a new cane that will inform the blind user of a dangerous situation in their path by issuing a warning sound from the cane itself or a voice alert from a compatible smart phone using an Android application. A white cane is usually used to detect danger using the sense of touch, but our improved cane uses technology to alert the visually impaired with a beep or voice message activated by a pair of sensors, one sensor detects obstacles above the user while the other covers the area in front. In addition our cane utilizes LED displays to flash a light in the dark to warn others. Our cane uses Arduino, a microcontroller for processing the gathered data to provide information to the visually impaired user. After detecting an obstacle the distance is measured by an ultrasonic sensor and sent to an Android application via a Bluetooth module.
