To improve the flame resistance and sound absorption properties of polyurethane(PU) foam, expandable graphite(EG) was used as an additive. In this study, the properties of PU foam containing EG were analyzed using a cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, an oxygen index tester, and a thermoconductor. The heat release rate of the PU foam was decreased with increasing EG content(up to an 83 % decrease at an 18 wt% EG content). This is a relatively slower rate than that of the conventional PU foams. This may be attributed to the fact that EG may be expanded, and as such, there is a higher chance of hindering the oxygen and heat flow at an elevated temperature. The limited oxygen index and thermal conductivity were increased with increasing additive content. In general, the PU-EG composite foam containing 7 % EG provided the most satisfactory sound absorption coefficient among all the foams that were experimented on in this study.
