Heavy duty diesel vehicles are the worst polluters of our environment, although it make up only few percent of all vehicles on the road, because it emit a lot of emission, especially particulate matter (PM). <br/> Pollution-control measures of old model year's vehicles are more urgent, because it were regulated by lower emissions standards and engine performances were deteriorated. Therefore, we have studied the retrofit technology of 2.5ton superannuated diesel truk to CNG truk and the optimization technology of engine performances for a low emission. Test results showed that the torque and the power with CNG were almost same as those of pure diesel oil. Also, NOx and CO after catalytic converter was very low. But the THC after catalytic converter was decreased a little compared to before catalytic converter.

CHP (combined heat & power generation) system produces heat and electricity simultaneously in one process with high efficiency. Also, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced as well. In the present, micro scale CHP systems under tens kWs are applied in small buildings. However, there have been few models in this class of CHP system. In the present study, a gas engine with nominal output of 15 kilowatts at 1,800rpm was developed from conventional agricultural diesel engine and optimized for micro CHP package. To increase the engine thermal efficiency, miller cycle was adapted by modification of earn shaft profile, and enhanced swirl was also introduced by modifying the intake gasket geometry. The gas engine shows 33.94% of thermal efficiency and Jess than 10 ppm of NOx emission at 13% Oxygen condition under stoichiometric combustion, and 35.52% of thermal efficiency and about 130 ppm of NOx emissions at 13% oxygen conditions under lean combustion.

Dimethyl ether(DME) is an oxygenated fuel with a cetane number higher than that of diesel oil. It meets the ULEV emission regulation and reduces the smoke to almost zero when used in a diesel engine. But NOx emission is almost same that of diesel engine. Generally EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is used to reduce NOx emission. In the present study, engine performance and exhaust emissions as the EGR rates were investigated with a 3.3 liter conventional DI diesel engine by using dimethyl ether fuel. In this test, in order to increase the fuel injection rate of DME because of high compressibility and low heating value compared to that of diesel, the nozzle opening pressure of the injectors was lowered and the plunger stroke of the injection pump was extended. The test results showed that the EGR was the very effective method to reduce the NOx emission in case of Dimethyl Ether Fuel in diesel engine.
DME 연료를 사용한 3.3 리터 디젤기관의 배기성능 향상에 관한 연구

A study is improvement of power and emission in a inline-pump DI diesel engine by using Dimethyl ether Fuel. Dimethyl ether(DME) is an oxygenated fuel with a cetane number higher than that of diesel oil. It meets the ULEV emission regulation and reduces the smoke to almost zero when used in a diesel engine. But NOx emission is almost same that of diesel engine. CO, THC emissions are lower than that of diesel engine. The emissions aren't satisfied the stronger emission regulation in the further. Generally DOC(Diesel oxidation catalyst) is used to reduce CO & THC emissions and EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is used to reduce NOx emission. Test results showed that the torque and the power with DME were almost same as those of pure diesel oil, but the brake thermal efficiency increased a little. also the bsec(brake specific energy consumption) with DME was similar that of diesel. The test results showed that the DOC was the vary effective method to reduce the CO emission in case of Dimethyl Ether Fuel in diesel engine. But, THC emission is showed a little reduction rates. Also EGR system was the very effective method to reduce the NOx emission in case of Dimethyl Ether Fuel in diesel engine.

The stationary engines are widely used as power supplies for GHP or CHP, Micro generation system. but, the engine is used with diesel engine at the stationary engine system because of their rapid response to operation, high reliability, and good durability. However, diesel engines also have the disadvantage as well as high level of vibration and noise. So, the stationary is changed from diesel engine to alternative gas fuel(LPG, CNG, or DME) engine. This paper shows experiments and analysis for the vibration characteristics of changed combustion condition on the stationary engine used LPG fuel.
