트라푼토 기법을 이용한 퀼트의 입체적 표현연구 -본인의 작품제작을 중심으로-

본 연구는 연구자가 퀼트작품을 제작하는 과정에서 평면적인 표현에서 벗어난 입체적 표현방식의 필요에 의하여 시작되었다. 솜이나 실을 이용하여 양각적(陽刻的)인 입체감을 주는 전통적 트라푼토를 새로운 기법들과 결합하고 실험 제작을 통하여 다양한 표현 방식을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 트라푼토는 퀼트의 제작에 있어서 전체가 아닌 부분만 강조할 수 있으며 평면인 작품에 입체감을 주었을 때 얻을 수 있는 입체효과가 분명하게 드러나는 장점이 있기 때문에 본 연구의 주제로 삼게 되었다. 기존 선행연구를 바탕으로 퀼트에 대한 정의와 역사적 기원과 유래, 퀼트기법, 전통 트라푼토 기법과 현대 트라푼토 기법들을 연구한다. 또한 퀼트 분야외의 의상이나 침구류 등의 트라푼토 선행연구 자료들도 비교 연구한다. 실험 작품제작은 퀼트에서 일반적으로 선호하는 원단인 면(棉)에서 벗어나기 위한 시도로 기본적인 광목, 아사 등 면을 포함하여 린넨, 오간자 등의 다양한 원단을 비교한다. 사용된 원단들의 기법 표현상 차이점과 짜임의 밀도 변화에 따른 작품 완성 후의 질감과 느낌 등을 분석한다. 트라푼토에 망사의 사용으로 얻을 수 있는 shadow기법 효과, 배경 색, 퀼팅 색실의 변화 등을 접목시켜 실험 제작한다. 결과적으로 가장 효과적인 표현 방법은 원단위에 염료 또는 안료를 이용하여 색을 더하는 나염 과정이었다. 나염은 도안(圖案)에서 표현하고자 하는 느낌을 더 생동감 있게 살려주었으며 실험 작품 제작에 영향을 주었다. 이처럼 퀼트 분야의 입체적 표현 연구는 더 많은 과제로 남아있다. 본 논문에서 얻어낸 트라푼토의 해석들이 퀼트의 평면적 표현에서 벗어나 앞으로의 퀼트의 분야에 트라푼토를 접목시킨 작품 제작과 입체적 표현의 후속 연구로 발전되기를 기대한다. This paper was started from the necessity of dimensional expression approach beyond the plane expression in the process to produce quilt works. This paper aims to propose a variety of expression approaches by combining new techniques with traditional Trapunto and producing the test product. Trapunto was selected as the theme in this paper because it can emphasize only a part not the whole in producing quilts and clearly express the dimensional effect when creating the cubic effect on the plane works. On the basis of existing researches, definition, history, origin and techniques of quilt, and traditional and modern Trapunto techniques were investigated. Furthermore, the existing researches on Trapunto including clothing or bedding as well as quilt works were compared and analyzed. The test products used a variety of fabrics including basic cottons such as gauze, linen and organza for avoiding the limit of material, as the cotton has been generally preferred as the material for quilt. This paper analyzed the difference in technical expression on the fabrics used in this paper and texture and feeling depending on diverse density of weave after completing the quilts. The test product was created by combining shadow technique which could be acquired using the mesh on Trapunto, background color and change of quilting color. In accordance with the analysis, the most effective expression approach was dyeing enhancing color using pigments or dyes on the fabrics. Dyeing created more dynamic feeling which was tried to express on the drawing and had impact on the creation of test product. As analyzed in this paper, there is a number of themes to be investigated related to the dimensional expression research. The interpretation on Trapunto in this paper will help further researches on dimensional expression and creation of quilt works combining Trapunto with quilt beyond the plane expression of quilts.
