Roll molds are widely used in the field of optics and electronics in order to meet the quick mass production of parts which have repeated patterns. Roll molds are generally plated with pure copper and machined with single crystal diamond tools in order to meet highly required quality. Because of the short life span of copper plated roll molds, machined roll molds are sometimes used after being coated with chrome or nickel. Another approach to increasing the life span of roll molds is the change of workpiece to harder and more stable one and the electrolytic nickel-phosphorous-alloy is being introduced gradually. Electroless nickel plating is used for flat molds from the past, but electrolytic plating has an advantage for roll molds because the thickness of the plating materials for roll molds should be over 500 ㎛. This study is an attempt to observe the machining characteristic of electrolytic nickel-phosphorous-alloy plated roll mold.
