이 글은 과거 오랫동안 국가주의이념과 강력하게 결합되었던 민족정체성이 변화되는 과정을 살펴보고, 1980년대 말 이래의 지구적 사회변동에 따라 변화된 한반도 평화통일운동의 새로운 주체로서의 시민사회 및 시민적 정체성에 대해 전망하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 남한에서의 민족정체성은 해방이후 보수적 민족주의와 진보적 민족주의로 분화하는 민족정체성의 제1의 분화과정을 거쳤다. 1980년대 말 이후 통일 민족주의의 가치는 시민사회의 평화가치와 결합하면서 다원화되는 제2의 분화과정을 맞았다. 이 글에서는 이 같은 제2의 분화과정의 조건이 되는 현대성의 특징을 지구시장화, 민주화, 정보화의 거대경향을 반영하는‘신갈등사회’로 규정한다. 아울러 신갈등사회에서 시민적 정체성으로 재구성된‘시민민족주의’의 의의를 모색하며, 한반도 평화 통일운동의 새로운 동력으로서의 시민민족주의의 가능성을 전망한다. This article focuses on analyzing the changing process of the national identity strongly combined with statism for a long time, and exploring the possibility of civil society and civic identity becoming a new subject of the Peace-Reunification Movement in the Korean Peninsula, driven by global social change since the late-1980s. Since the 1945 liberation, the national identity in South Korea entered the first phase of differentiation, divided into the conservative nationalism and the progressive nationalism. Since the late-1980s, national identity has entered the second phase of differentiation that national identity diversifies as the value of unification-nationalism coupled with the peace value of civil society. This paper defines the characteristics of modernity, the condition of which the second phase of differentiation as ‘the new social conflict society’ reflecting the mega trends of global marketization, democratization, and information. Also, this paper prospects the significance of ‘civic nationalism’ restructured to civic identity in new social conflict society, and the practical possibility of civic nationalism as the key driver of the Peace-Reunification movement.
