This paper examines the impact of foreign banks on the monetary policy transmission mechanism in the Korean economy during the period from 2000 to 2012, with a specific focus on the lending behavior by banks with different types of ownership. Using the bank-level panel data of the banking system in Korea, we present consistent evidence on the buffering impact of foreign banks, especially foreign bank branches including American bank branches, on the effectiveness of the monetary policy transmission mechanism in Korea from the bank-lending channel perspective during the period of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. Findings of this paper suggest that foreign bank branches reduced their lending when the Bank of Korea lowered its base rate substantially to conduct expansionary monetary policy during the global financial crisis period. One of the underlying reasons for this buffering effect by foreign bank branches is the existence of internal capital markets operated by multinational banks to overcome capital market frictions faced when the foreign banks finance their loans.

Foreign Bank Penetration, Resource Allocation and Economic Growth: Evidence from Emerging Economies

This paper examines the implications of foreign bank penetration on economic growth from the perspective of resource allocation in host countries. We use aggregate banking data, constructed from bank-level balance sheets and income statement information covering more than 1200 banks in the 35 emerging economies of Asia, Latin America and Eastern and Central Europe for the period from 1996 to 2003. By applying the pooled OLS and fixed-effects models, we present consistent evidence that the effect of gross fixed capital formation on output growth is higher in an economy with a more pronounced level of foreign bank penetration relative to an economy with a lower level of foreign bank penetration. This finding suggests that foreign banks play an important role in allocating capital in a more productive way, thus leading to a higher economic growth rate. One of the main policy implications of our findings in this paper is that foreign banks may serve as a channel in enhancing economic integration of emerging economies with advanced economies that are the home countries of foreign banks.

본 연구는 한국의 중소기업에 의한 전자상거래 도입과 기업 내에서의 지속적인 확대 발전에 주요한 특성 및 결정요인들이 무엇인지를 규명하고 그 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다. 기존의 기술혁신과 정보시스템 도입에 관한 이론들을 바탕으로 이를 종합하여 중소기업의 전자상거래 도입과 확산에 대한 하나의 통합 모델을 실증적으로 검증·발전시켰다. 특성 및 요인별로 관련가설을 설정한 후에 설문조사를 통해 수집한 자료를 통계 분석하여 그 모델을 검증하였는데 그 결과는 모델을 잘 뒷받침하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 전자상거래 채택의 결정에 있어서는 CEO 특성, 전자상거래 정보시스템 특성 및 기업 조직적 특성이 주요 결정요인으로 추정되었고, 전자상거래 확산에서는 전자상거래의 업무의 특성과 기업의 경쟁환경이 주요 결정요인으로 분석되었다. 한국적 현실에서 정부의 역할이 중소기업의 전자상거래 채택에는 중요하게 작용하나 전자상거래의 확산에는 그 역할이 상대적으로 축소되는 것으로 나타났다. 결론에서 중소기업의 전자상거래 정착화를 위한 몇가지 시사점과 향후 연구방향을 제시하였다. This study aims to identify major determinants of the adoption of e-Commerce (EC) and the extent of EC development in Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) in Korea. Based on the technological innovation and information system literature, this study develops an integrated model of EC adoption and expansion which is applicable to the Korean SMEs. A questionnaire survey was conducted to empirically test the integrated model. The estimation results supported the model, in general, and the major hypotheses on EC adoption and expansion. Statistical analysis on the survey data shows that EC adoption decision by Korean SMEs is made mainly on the basis of CEO characteristics, EC system characteristics, and firms' organizational characteristics, while EC system characteristics and firms' competition environment play important roles in EC expansion. The Korean government plays an important role in EC adoption, but its role abates in the process of EC expansion. In the end, the paper also suggests several implications on government policies for the EC establishment in Korea and directions of future research.
