Wordsworth의 作品에 나타난「老」意識에 관한 小考

19세기후반 특히 Victoria 조이래의 일반적인 Wordsworth 관은 그가 다만 경건하고 도덕적이며, 또 순수하고 낙천적인 자연시인으로 생각되어온 것이었다. 그러다가 금세기에 접어 들면서 이와 같이 기존적 일반견해와는 아주 달리 그는 문예비평계에 새롭고 중요한 관심의 대상으로 등장하여 그의 생애와 작품이 매우 활발한 재평가를 받게 되었다. 그 이유중의 하나를 들어 보면 그의 작품의 사상적 배경의 근간을 이루고 있는 Humanism이 애타적인 「인도주의」거나, Renaissance 이후의 이를테면 「고전적 인문주의」의 뜻을 내포하고 있는 것이 아니라, 인간의 이성과 감정을 강력히 긍정하면서, 인간이 가지고 있는 모든 가능성을 풍부히 계발하려는 「인간주의」라는데서 그의 사상이 현대성을 다분히 띄고 있다는 점일 것이다. 실제로 Wordsworth자신도 인간세계와 인간의 본질을 ‘this unintelligible world’ 와 ‘our complex being’이라 하고 난해한 인간의 실존을 심사숙고하면서 어떤 궁극적인 해결을 찾으려고 부단히 노력했던 것은 사실이다.

20세기초 이래 영국이나 미국의 학계와 비평계가 일찌기 19세기 영시사상 불멸의 업적을 이뤄놓은 Byron, Tennyson, Browning 등과 같은 탁월한 시인들이 있었음에도 불구하고 이들을 제쳐놓고 유독히 Wordsworth에 대하여 비상하게 깊은 관심을 기울이면서, 그에 대한 새로운 연구라든가 또는 매우 주목할만한 비평을 계속 활발하게 발표하여 소위 Wordsworth 복흥이라고 일컬어도 좋을 만큼의 긴장된 상황을 제시하고 있는데 에는 상당한 이유가 있다고 본다.

Wordsworth는 "Tintern Abbey"에서 일찍이 청소년시절에 그가 체험한 自然과의 神秘的 一體感을 이에 隨伴하는 'aching joys'라던가 또는 'dizzy raptures'와 같은 열정과 함께 영구히 상실한 대신에 이를 보상하기에 충분한 것으로서 새로 얻은 것이 이른바 "The still, sad music of humanity"라는 것이었이다.

Wordsworth의 “Guilt and Sorrow”에 대하여

This paper is an attempt to determine what eventually came to motivate Wordsworth to create his "Guilt and Sorrow" by means of examining the backfround and the contents of the subject work. It cam be apparently observed that the aftermath of the French Revolution which he had so ardently sympathized with failed him to his disappointment, and thus he seems to have concluded that both man's irrational faults involved in the exercise of criminal laws and tragic outcome of war are doomed to cause evil effects upon innocent human individuals. It is, however, obviously found in this work that Wordsworth had a mind to make use of this poem to express agonies of his own, trying to attribute them to the social defects of his lifetime, not to his own mental conflicts resulting from his own personal affairs. In addition to these considerations on the above matters, an analytical approach is made to compare MSI with MSI in order to verify what differences of meaning are given to them and also how the former came to develop or change into the other.

Wordworth의 Lyrical Ballads에 대한 고찰

This paper is intended to analyse and review the main theme of the poetical works which comprise Wordsworth's Lyrical Ballads and to apprehend the essence of his creative mind and attitude toward man and nature. In order to examine what may be considered to be his central ideas on life in terms of the two entities, the lines from his works cited are divided into several groups in accordance with their respective subjects for more detailed consideration and discussion. It is generally concluded that Wordsworth as a champion of Romanticism in English literature is believed to have advocated that man's imagination can be generated and made to come into existence through a reciprocal action between nature and the human mind reflected upon it - that is, power which would impress upon us even the smallest plain things often found in our familiar surroundings of everyday life. He is also understood to have claimed that the principal objectives of Lyrical Ballads, from this standpoint of view, is to enlighten and develop this power among the individuals interested. In hopes of achieving this task, Wordsworth maintained that man must remove the analytic reasonings from his mind, that he must present some of the useful methods by means of which man could surmount the barrier, a personal state of isolation and that he must eventually bring forth the joy of life through harmony and sympathy between man and nature.

Ode : Intimations of Immortality 小考

자연신비주의자 Wordsworth의 회상적 철학시로서 Tintern Abbey와 함께 그의 가장 귀중한 대표작품인 Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood는 현재까지 대체로 그의 전기적인 여러 사실과 결부시켜서 그의 생애에서 이 작품이 어떠한 의미와 비중을 가지고 있는가에 대하여 고찰되어 온 한편으로는, 이 방향과는 달리 그의 철학적 사색이 집약된 독립된 작품으로서 검토해 보려는 노력도 보여왔다. 후자에 속하는 시도중에서 그 전형적인 예가 Lionel Trilling의 경우로서 그는 이 작품이 시인이 자기의 예술에 대한 의식적인 결별이며, 쇠약해 가는 자신의 힘에 대한 일종의 만가와도 같은 성격을 띄운 것으로 보아 온 다른 비평가들의 생각에 대하여 새로운 힘가 주제를 가진 헌사로 본 매우 대조적인 견해를 제시했다.

Wordsworthd의 The Excursion에 대한 고찰

Wordsworth가 1814년에 출판한 The Excursion은 원래 하나의 독립된 작품은 아니고, The Recluse라는 보다 방대한 작품의 일부로서 계획된 것이었다. 그런데 그는 The Recluse를 3부로 구성하여 그중 제1부와 제2부에는 주로 그의 명상을 담고, 제2부 The Excursion은 어느정도 극적 형식을 취할 의도였었다고 한다. 그러나 당초 계획된 이 3부작중에서 실제로 완성 된 것은 The Excursion뿐이고, 제1부는 제1장의 Home at Grasmere만이 쓰여졌을 뿐, 제3부는 계획만으로 끝나버렸던 것이다. The Recluse는 Coleridge와의 교유중인 1798년경에 계획된 것으로서 Coleridge는 이 작품의 처음 계획이 어느 정도는 그의 제안에 의한 것으로 보고 있었다. 그리고 그가 Wordsworth의 이 작품에 건 기대는 프랑스 혁명의 결과에 실망하여 사회개혁에 대한 희망과 의욕을 잃고 오직 쾌락의 이기주의에 빠져든 당시 사람들의 의식구조를 교정하는 일이었다.

앞서 말한것처럼 Wolfe는 일단 그가 자기 눈으로 그가 살고 있던 사회에서 직접 목격 했거나 피부로 느낀 것들은 예외없이 그 자신의「자아」를 통하여 반사 굴절되어서 그 자신의 경우와 그의 개인적인 고뇌가 선명하게 반영 되었는데 이렇게 자기와 미국을 동일시 한 것은 어느 면에서는 그의 문학적 역량을 반감하는 결과도 되고, 또 이것이 바로 그의 예술적 수련의 미숙한점을 말해 줄 수 있다고도 할 수 있으나, 동시에 이것은 그의 unique한 예술적 정신세계의 특질을 보여주고 있는 것이라고도 말할 수 있는 것이다.
