Preparation and Properties of Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Vinyltrimethoxysilane (PVA/VTMS) Hybrid Films with Enhanced Thermal Stability and Oxygen Barrier Properties

To enhance the thermal stability and barrier properties of pure poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a series ofpoly(vinyl alcohol)/vinyltrimethoxysilane (PVA/VTMS) hybrid films were prepared via a sol-gel process, and theirphysical properties were investigated as a function of VTMS content. During the sol-gel process, simultaneous reactionsbetween hydroxyl groups of PVA and silanol groups of hydrolyzed VTMS and self-condensation of VTMSoccurred, inducing a cross-linked network structure and greatly enhanced thermal stability and oxygen barrier properties. The glass transition temperature and thermal decomposition temperature (T5%) of the PVA/VTMS hybridfilms increased from 72.6 to 84.3 oC and 273.6 to 342.2 oC, respectively, with increasing VTMS content from 0 to20%. Oxygen transmission rates of the hybrid films decreased from 6.12 to 0.17 cm3/m2×day, and those of the hybridfilms incorporating 5%, 10%, and 20% VTMS were suppressed by 65.7%, 95.6%, and 97.2%, respectively, versusa pure PVA film. These are dependent on the chemical structure and morphology of the films with differing initialamounts of VTMS. The chemical affinity for water, intermolecular packing, and rigidity in polymer chains increasedwith increasing cross-linking by VTMS, leading to enhanced oxygen barrier properties and thermal stability in thePVA/VTMS hybrid films.

Sarah Ruhl's Dead Man’s Cell Phone is a play about cell phones, meditation, death, love, and disconnection in the digital age. It is common to communicate the latest information through mobile phones in this modern era. In this work, the cell phone is a medium for communicating with the world of death as the most advanced communication device ever invented. It is also a reminder of connection that is absent in this world, and it is a medium that fuses reality and surrealism. Dead Man’s Cell Phone is a comedy, that is anti-Aristotelian in composition and Dionysian in spirit. In this work, reconciliation and healing between the worlds of life and death are driven by the confabulation of the main character Jean. The origin of confabulation, the act of creating a story in the mind, include ‘fables’. Therefore, confabulation has a certain universal truth regardless of whether or not the specifics are true. This play is a story about a dead man, Gordon, and Jean, who witnessed Gordon's last moment in the world. Jean’s confabulation shows that both the living and the dead can heal each other’s wounds and close the gap between the two, so that a person's life can be reconciled even after death.

A Case Study of The Use of a Pragmatic Translationinto Korean for Enhancing SalienceMijin Im Abstract: This paper aims to examine whether there is the possibility to enhance the salience of beginning-level college students. In order to do this, one case study was developed, and all three subjects were college students (two beginners and one advanced). The material in this study was an American police comedy television series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine because it was believed that this show was full of salience. The method was a pragmatic translation into Korean (PTK). The subjects were administered three tests and one oral interview. The results revealed that beginner 1 experienced salience in the process of matching PTK with the relevant English expression, while beginner 2 experienced salience in the process of analyzing an English expression on the basis of PTK. Moreover, the advanced subject not only enhanced salience by comparing PTK with the relevant English expression (individual word, phrase, etc.) but also judged whether he could use the salient expression in future conversations. This case study showed there is the possibility to help beginners to enhance their salience. Moreover, it revealed that PTK activities could give L2 learners benefits for productive language use. 연극의 사회성, 신자유주의, 노동시장 유연화—린 노티지의 <<스웨트>>

Lynn Nottage, in Sweat, dramatizes workers who have lost their jobs due to the flexible labor markets of capitalist neoliberalism. While few Americans were left unscathed by the financial crisis of 2008, the manufacturing industry and the unions upon which its workers relied began to rapidly decline over the prior decade when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed into law. Nottage transforms intimate testimony and scrupulous research on the social and economic hardships experienced by the people she interviewed in Reading, Pennsylvania, one of the nation’s poorest cities, into a character-driven drama that explores the human costs exacted by the contradictions of late neoliberal capitalism. As drama is more social and political than any other art, Nottage tries to include social phenomena and the connection of human life in the play. Sweat, portrays the tragedy of the loss of employment and the fear of poverty. The play asks us to consider what constitutes a livable life when there are no jobs. The desperation of those most vulnerable leads to violence. And the ‘blind fury’ of workers who face unfair treatment is directed not at the top but to the side.

A Suggestion About the Use of Salience in Learning Multiword Expressions Through an Animated Movie

The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to review the literature concerning the notion of salience and 2) to demonstrate how to guide EFL students in Korea to pay attention to multiword expressions (MWEs). This paper is based on Spada and Lightbown’s (2008) integrated form-focused instruction (FFI) in which student attention is attracted to MWEs during communicative activities. The definition of salience and its aspects and dimensions were reviewed as simply and easily as possible. Since the notion of salience will be used educationally, a complex and difficult review was avoided. The American computer-animated romantic comedy Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (Tartakovsky, 2018) was chosen to show how salience and attention effectively interplay. This animation is perfect to observe the function of salience. Visual and acoustic characteristics are typical features to detect perceptional salience. Characters’ utterances are superior in detecting semantic-pragmatic salience. In addition to these, bottom-up salience and top-down salience were introduced. Ten scenes were cut in the animation to demonstrate how salience constrains and directs attention to MWEs. When teachers use this demonstration in the classroom, they do not have to emphasize concepts such as perceptual salience or sematic salience; the teacher helps to direct their students’ attention to MWEs.

Boric acid (BA)을 이용한 PVA/BA복합필름의 수분 차단특성 연구

폴리(비닐 알코올)(Poly(vinyl alcohol);PVA)은 강한 수소결합으로 인하여 산소차단특성, 기계적 강도 및 내마모성이 우수하여 섬유, 필름, 접착제, 표면처리제, 코팅 원료 등 다양한 분야에서 사용되고 있다. 하지만, PVA의 하이드록시기로 인해 수분에 민감하여 습도에 따라 산소 차단특성 및 기계적 성질이 급격하게 저하된다. 본 연구에서는 PVA의 수분에 대한 민감도를 줄이기 위해 가교제인 Boric acid (BA)와의 가교반응을 통하여 수분 차단성이 향상된 PVA/BA 복합 필름을 제조하였다. 제조한 복합필름의 물성을 확인하기 FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC, OTR, WVTR, Contact angle, water pressure resistance 분석을 실시하였다.

해방기 김남천 文學의 革命的 世界觀과 創造的 實踐의 問題 - 「1945년 8․15」와 「十月」을 중심으로 -

This article sought to examine the possibility of the socialist revolution, which was to be measured through Kim, Namcheon's August 15 in 1945 and October in 1945. Kim, Namcheon, a liberator, participated more in creation and organization movement than anyone else. Through the organizational movement Kim, Namcheon's was trying to gain a self - narrative of given liberation. In order to realize the true emancipation of the ‘new born Joseon’ as he embodied and practiced the absent ideology that was absent, he was at the forefront of the liberation front and immersed in creative work. Above all, he had the socialist ideology of Marx and Engels to support his creation. Kim, Namcheon's, in the August 15 in 1945 revolves around the absolute ideology of Kim Ji-won and Hwang Sung-mook, the gap between reality and ideology revealed in Park Moon-gyeong. But it did not take long for his intense aspirations and beliefs to be threatened. Kim, Namcheon after the North Korea is the only one writing short stories. To Kim, Namcheon, who was trying to measure the possibility of revolution through creation, put the distance after the North and North Korea far from socialist revolution. 이 글은 해방기 김남천의 「1945년 8․15」와 「十月」을 통해 가늠하고자 했던 社會主義 革命의 可能性을 살펴보고자 했다. 해방기 김남천이 創作活動과 組織運動을 통해 얻고자 한 것은 ‘주어진’ 해방의 자기서사화였다. 부재했던 사상을 구체화하고 실천해가면서 ‘신생조선’의 진정한 해방을 찾기 위해 그는 해방전선의 第一線에 나서면서 쉬지 않고 創作에 몰두했던 것이다. 김남천은 「1945년 8․15」에서 김지원과 황성묵의 절대적 이념과 박문경에 의해 드러난 현실과 이념 사이의 乖離, 그리고 「十月」에서 박철을 통해 보여준 좌익운동의 내부갈등과 이에 대해 혼동을 느끼는 동호 등의 재현을 통해 혁명의 可能性을 찾고자 했다. 그러나 그의 유토피아에 대한 강렬한 熱望과 信念이 威脅받는 데는 그리 오랜 시간이 걸리지 않았다. 越北 후 김남천은 단 한편의 단편소설을 創作하는 데 그친다. 革命의 可能性을 창작을 통해 가늠하고자 한 김남천에게 越北 후의 삶은 오히려 社會主義 革命과의 거리두기였다.

In The Odyssey, Penelope is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife, a woman known for her intelligence and constancy. And the book draws to an end with the slaughter of the suitors by Odysseus and Telemachus, the hanging of twelve maids who have been sleeping with the suitors, and the reunion of Odysseus and Penelope. Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad remythologizes this event drawing on material other than The Odyssey, especially for the details of Penelope’s parentage, her early life and marriage, and the scandalous rumours circulating about her. Margaret Atwood has chosen to tell the story from the perspective of Penelope and the twelve hanged maids. The maids form a chanting and singing Chorus, which focuses on two questions that arise after any close reading of The Odyssey: what led to the hanging of the maids, and what was Penelope really up to? In The Penelopiad, Penelope is always been haunted by the death of the hanged maids. The Penelopiad is gothic version of The Odyssey told through the voice of Penelope, speaking from beyond the grave as she tells her life story in the form of a confession in self-defence and self-justification. However, Penelope’s is not the only voice here her tale is frequently interrupted by the voices of her twelve hanged maids, those nameless slave girls who have nothing to say in The Odyssey. Writing against this erasure, Atwood uses her imagination to expand Homer’s text, giving voice to this group of powerless silenced women.

Digital Thermography of the Fingers and Toes in Raynaud’s Phenomenon

The aim of this study was to determine whether skin temperature measurement by digitalthermography on hands and feet is useful for diagnosis of Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP). Fifty-seven patients with RP (primary RP, n = 33; secondary RP, n = 24) and 146 healthyvolunteers were recruited. After acclimation to room temperature for 30 min, thermalimaging of palmar aspect of hands and dorsal aspect of feet were taken. Temperaturedifferences between palm (center) and the coolest finger and temperature differencesbetween foot dorsum (center) and first toe significantly differed between patients andcontrols. The area under curve analysis showed that temperature difference of the coolestfinger (cutoff value: 2.2°C) differentiated RP patients from controls (sensitivity/specificity:67/60%, respectively). Temperature differences of first toe (cutoff value: 3.11°C) alsodiscriminated RP patients (sensitivity/specificity: about 73/66%, respectively). Acombination of thermographic assessment of the coolest finger and first toe was highlyeffective in men (sensitivity/ specificity : about 88/60%, respectively) while thermographicassessment of first toe was solely sufficient for women (sensitivity/specificity: about74/68%, respectively). Thermographic assessment of the coolest finger and first toe isuseful for diagnosing RP. In women, thermography of first toe is highly recommended.
