Vol.28 No.1

Korean and English have different syllable structures. Korean people, however, tend to apply Korean syllable structures to English words because of their utterance habits. The purpose of this paper is to examine to what degree Korean students are influenced by the utterance habits of their mother tongue when they speak English. To this end, I prepared two kinds of test materials, with 30 questions each, which were related to /ɨ/, /u/ or /i/ epenthesis. In the tests, 40 freshmen from Janghang Technical High School served as subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups, an experimental group and a control group. The tests consisted of two steps. First, I examined the degree of interference by the subjects' mother tongue in their pronunciation of English words. Next, after 40 days of instruction to the experiment group on the differences between English and Korean syllable structures, using a contrastive analysis, I examined their degree of improvement using the same method as the first experiment. The results of the experiments were as follows. In the first experiment, both the experimental group and the control group showed a similar degree of interference. The utterance ability of the experimental group, however, was improved in the second experiment. In conclusion, it was found that most of the subjects were greatly influenced by their mother tongue in English utterance, and that special teaching through a contrastive analysis of both languages could reduce native-language interference to some extent. < Wonkwang University >

        정진영(Jinyoung Jeong),김태수(Taesu Kim),이승원(Seung Won Lee),희천(Hui Cheon Im),석현정(Hyeon-Jeong Suk) 대한인간공학회 2019 大韓人間工學會誌 Vol.38 No.3

Objective: This study proposes a personalized lighting system to enhance the affective quality of passengers" experience in a premium bus. Background: As concerns about user centered aspect increases in public transportation, this study considers passengers" seating postures as the cue to optimally related the behavioral patterns to their desired emotion. Method: Empirical test and user workshop were conducted to explore the personalized lighting in a premium bus. In an empirical test, 34 college students participated and their posture changes were measured with two angle joints- backrest and footrest. Eight types of given activity were narrowed down into four categories, and then during the user workshop, 26 college students explored and assessed the quality of lighting to best enhance affective experience for each of the activity category. Results: We found a noticeable difference across the activity types, and the changes were consistent among the participants in the case of the backrest. In the case of the footrest, however, the representative data were not found as the angle varied a lot individually. Based on the observation we derived four categories of activities: Focus, Casual, Relax, and Sleep. Individual variations were observed as height and sitting habits of participants varied. In total, there are 108 different types of emotional lighting collected, and seven patterns of light distribution were proposed. Conclusion: Passengers are willing to adjust their sitting postures by changing the angles of backrest and footrest, where we can make a good assumption of their desired behavior and emotion based on their postures. Based on empirical studies, we suggest four types of lighting that optimally fits to the frequent activities in a premium bus, such as focus, casual, relax, and sleep. Application: Furthermore, we expect advancement of user-centered lighting design by achieving emotional satisfaction not only in a public transportation but also in any personalized space.

Vol.38 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to examine through experiment if Korean students can learn sounds like /r/, /f/, /b/ and /v/ precisely, sounds which Korean does not contain, and to discover methods whereby this learning may be accomplished. To this end, we prepared two kinds of test materials with 30 questions each, consisting of pairs with /l, r/, /f, p/, and /b, v/ in word-initial positions. In the tests, 40 third-year students from Janghang Technical High School served as subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The tests consisted of two steps. First, we examined each group's pronunciation ability of the above consonants in word-initial positions. Next, after teaching the experimental group the differences between the consonants above with special programs, we examined their degree of improvement. The results showed that the pronunciation ability of the experimental group improved more than that of the control group. In conclusion, although most of the subjects of the control group had difficulty in pronouncing the sounds that Korean does not contain, they improved their pronunciation ability to some degree by learning the place and manner of articulation, and through reetitive practice.

      • A Study on the Relations between on the Cooperative Principle and the Politeness Principle

Vol.26 No.-

The purpose of this paper is to explain some principles of conversation and search for some issues in each principle. People exchange their thoughts primarily with verbal language. In this paper, 1 discuss pragmatic principles such as the Cooperative Principle(CP) and the Politeness Principle(PP) for people to obey while using their verbal languages, Considering some examples of each maxim, I examine these principles that Grice and Leech presented. This paper proceeds as follows. First, I examine the cases in which the PP rescues the CP from serious trouble. Second, I also examine the cases in which the Irony Principle(IP) overrides the CP and the PP. I show that there are some utterances that cannot be accounted for by the interactions of the above principles. Finally, I present the cases of the interaction between the CP and the PP that Leech and Grice overlooked. I conclude that the CP and the PP should be modified.

Vol.45 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to examine through experiment if Korean students learned sounds like /r/, /f/, /b/ and /v/ precisely, sounds which Korean doesn't contain, and to discover methods whereby this learning may be accomplished. For this end, we prepared two kinds of test materials with 30 questions each, which consisted of minimal pairs with /1, r/, /f, p/, and /b, v/ in word-initial positions. In the tests, 40 third-year students from Janghang Technical High School served as subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups (an experiment group and a control group). The tests consisted of two steps. First, we examined each group's listening ability of the above consonants in word-initial positions. Next, after teaching the experiment group the differences between the consonants above with special programs, we examined their degree of improvement. The results showed that the listening ability of the experiment group was more improved than that of the control group. In conclusion, although most of the subjects of the control group had difficulty in listening to the sounds that, Korean doesn't contain, they could improve their listening ability of those sounds to some degree by learning the place and manner of articulation, and through repetitive practice.
