        Korean and English Cultural Differences Reflected in Figurative Expressions - Focusing on ‘마음’ (maeum) and 'mind'

        본 논문은 한국어 ‘마음’과 영어 ‘mind’의 은유표현들을 비교하여 두 언어의 문화적 특성을 확인하고자 하였다. 이 두 단어는 두 언어의 문화적 특성인 집단주의와 개인주의를 반영하고 있음이 확인되었다. 실제 사용된 예문들을 대상으로 비교한 결과 양 언어 모두 다섯 가지의 은유법을 사용하여 추상적 개념인 ‘마음’과 ‘mind’를 표현하는 것이 확인되었다. 두 언어가 사용한 은유법의 범주는 일치하기는 하나 세부적으로 한국어의 ‘마음’은 감정이나 느낌을 표현하는 데 주로 사용되고 영어의 ‘mind’는 지적인 활동을 지칭하는 데 주로 사용된 것을 확인하였다. 이는 집단 내에서의 유연한 인간관계가 중요한 집단주의적 문화와 엄밀한 분석과 두뇌활동이 중시되는 개인주의적 문화를 반영한 것으로 해석된다.

        Cyclophosphamide 또는 전염병파브리시우스낭병 바이러스에 의한 면역부전증의 닭에서의 CELO 바이러스 감염

        CELO virus infection in immuno- depressed chickens induced either by cyclophosphamide ( CP) or infectious bursal diaease virus (IBDV) was undertaken by the determination of serum antibodies and by the recovery of viruses in feces. At low level of CP as 6 to 8 mg per day-old chicken,the immunosuppression was transient. In CP treated chickens, serum neutralizing antibodes to CELO virus appeared later and titers lowered 4 to 8 folds than those in control chickens. However, booster immune responses of CP treated chickens to CELO virus was similar to control group. Excretion pattern of CELO virus in feces was also similar in both CP treated and control chickens. Immunosuppressive effect of IBDV was somewhat prolonged. Chickens immuno-depressed by IBDV at day old were not responded to primary exposure of CELO virus immunologically until secondary viral exposure was made. Even in booster immune responses, IBDV infected chickens showed poorer response and titers decreased 8 to 16 fold than those of control chickens, Duration of virus excretion in feces was much extended in IBDV infected chickens as long as 6 weeks after viral exposure, while CELO virus recovered only within 3 weeks in control chickens.

        Temperature and salt content were the most important factors on the fermentation of kimchi. The fermentation of kimchi was depressed by low temperature and the effective salt concentration was 3.0 % The fermentation of kimchi was accelerated by addition of red pepper and garlic but depressed by addition of ginger. The major lactic acid bacteria associated with kimchi fermentation was Leuconostoc mesenteroids. The fermentation of kimchi varied with various factor- appendixes, surface finishing methods and chinese cabbage cultivars, etc.

      • 무효전력보상장치 설치가 900 MW 복합화력발전소의 성능향상에 미치는 효과

        900 MW 복합화력발전소의 경우 소내 부하의 대부분은 회전기기이며 저역률로 운전되고 있고 역률 저하는 무효전력을 증가시켜 기기의 효율 저하 및 불필요한 소내 전력을 소비하는 원인이 된다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 방안인 무효전력을 흡수 및 제거하는 무효전력보상장치를 6.9 kV 소내 모선에 설치하여 운전함으로써 그에 대한 결과를 제시하고자 한다. 본 시스템의 적용 결과 우선 회전기기의 역률이 0.22로 개선 및 소내 부하전력량 1.4% 감소됨을 확인하였고 발전기 열효율 0.1%, 발전출력810 kW 증가함을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 투자비 1.5억 원 대비 소내 전력손실비용 2억 원/년 감소 및 매출액 10억 원/년 증가로 경제성 있음으로 분석되었고 향후 건설 및 운영 시 비용절감이 가능함을 확인하였다. In the case of a 900 MW combined cycle power plant, most of the load on the site is a rotating device and is operated at a low power factor, and the power factor decrease increases the reactive power, which causes the efficiency of the device to be consumed and unnecessary unnecessary power consumption. This study intends to present the results by installing and operating a reactive power compensation device that absorbs and removes reactive power, which is a solution to this problem, on a 6.9 kV on-board bus. As a result of application of this system, first, it was confirmed that the power factor of the rotating machine was improved to 0.22 and the load power in the house was reduced by 1.4%, and the thermal efficiency of the generator was increased by 0.1% and the power generation power by 810 kW. Next, it was confirmed that the cost of construction and operation can be reduced in the future due to economic feasibility, with a decrease of 200 million won/year in electricity loss compared to 1.5 billion won in investment, an increase of 1 billion won/year in sales, and a one-year capital recovery period.

        New Directions in Teaching English Literature to Non-Natives of English in Asia

        This paper proposes what needs to be done in the field of English literature education in Korea, and other parts of Asia where English is not their first language. I have looked at the current curricula of English literature at several universities here and compared them with those of other universities in Asia as well as in the United States, only to find that, contrary to the practice of Korean universities, the English literature curricula of the observed foreign universities are not based on the mechanical division of courses based on genre and chronology. For a couple of reasons, I suggest uniqueness and diversity as guiding principles in setting up an English literature curriculum. As non-native speakers of English, it is impossible for our students to deal with the quantity of reading that Western students do. It is very doubtful whether we should or even can teach every century with an equal emphasis. We are living in the 21st century, and we should make the past literature relevant to the present. Universities should offer different courses in English literature; they should create their own set of courses with a few focal themes. In order to get students more interested in literature and to develop an area of specialization, the curriculum should provide diverse roads to literature studies This paper proposes what needs to be done in the field of English literature education in Korea, and other parts of Asia where English is not their first language.
