This paper is a defense of Troilus' acedia, which has been the target of severe criticism in the tragic denouement of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde. Troilus, a shy, inactive, and excessively depressed hero, makes himself a tragic victim of this play. It can't be easily denied that Troilus is at the core of the tragedy. He looks like Hamlet, lost, trapped, and paralyzed in the maze of thought.Troilus, an ideal courtier and honorable knight, consistently hesitates over and keeps a low profile to Criseyde, the lover, while both Pandarus and Diomede are busy taking action. Pandarus, who diagnoses Troilus' acedia as a disease and tries to cure it, and Diomede, who is an active and aggressive warrior of love, are foils to Troilus' acedia. For them, love is a kind of work, an object of action, and a labor to be planned and manipulated. Chaucer intentionally uses Pandarus and Diomede's rashness, activeness, and secularism to emphasize Troilus' inactive and passive characteristics as tragic flaws. Troilus' acedia can be considered a tragic flaw that brings about the hero's tragic end but must not be criticised or under-evaluated. Chaucer doesn't take a negative approach to such psychological symptoms as procrastination, lethargy, and negligence. As for the outcome of Idealism, Troilus' acedia is in sharp contrast to the secular view of love, and makes the man, who wanders off in the maze of love, nobler and more sublime. Balanced with Troilus' consistency, sensibility, and nobility, it helps create a real human being, and makes Troilus' love ideal and spiritual, remote from practicalism and secularism of Pandarus and Diomede.

This paper is an academic attempt to set the starting point of contemporary history in the world. In defining the concept of contemporary history, the paper follows the position of Geoffrey Barraclough that it begins with the emergence of the institutions, systems and phenomena that have been making direct impacts on our present time. Based on the widely embraced notion that globalization and its challenge constitute the major contour of our era, the paper argues that they became world history phenomena after the Russian Revolution. The Revolution has generally not occupied such a crucial place in the modern historiography, as it has been treated not as a global but Russia’s event for a long time. However, the contemporaries like Lenin and other intellectuals, especially in the colonial world, had never failed to see the event as one with strong global implications. By revealing their views and perceptions of the Russian Revolution, this paper posits that the Revolution was made possible by their understanding of the global contradictions often called imperialism and spawned the world-wide anti-imperialist movements. Given that the present days are still defined by globalization and its challenges, the Russian Revolution marked the beginning of our time, that is, contemporary history.

이 글은 강정일당이 남긴 척독 82편을 중심으로 척독의 특징과 삶의 의미를 살펴본 것이다. 척독은 그녀가 남편 윤광연에게 학문을 권하고 독려하거나 사회생활에 대하여 충고한 내용들이 주를 이루고 있다. 강정일당은 남편에게 믿을만한 의논의 상대자이자 충실한 조언자로서 삶의 길잡이 같은 존재였다. 남성의 학문토론장에 직접적으로 참여할 수 없었던 강정일당은 학문을 할 수 있는 방법으로 척독을 이용하였다. 강정일당은 조선시대가 요구하는 여성으로서 역할을 적극적이고 충실하게 실천하면서도 틈틈이 많은 서적들을 읽고 탐구하였다. 또한 그녀는 배운 바를 일상생활에서 실천하며 살고자 했다. 도의 경지에 이르기 위해서 수신과 수양을 기본으로 하였으며, 사소한 것에도 예를 지키고자 하였다. 그녀는 학문의 깊은 뜻을 몸소 실천하며, 한 인간으로서 주체적으로 살아간 여성이다. This journal looked into characteristics and meaning of life appeared in ChuckDock based on 82 pieces of ChuckDock that Gang Jeongihldang left. ChuckDock mainly consists of encouragement for learning and advices about social life to her husband, Yun Gwangyeon. Gang Jeongihldang was both a guide for her husband"s life and a reliable partner to discuss with as a faithful adviser. Due to the circumstance that women were not able to participate in men’s discussion, she used ChuckDock in this case as a way to keep her study. She not only faithfully fulfilled the role of women in Chosun society also pored over a lot of books in spare time. Furthermore, she tried to practice what she learned in daily life. In order to reach the stage of saint, Gang Jeongihldang basically followed moral and mental culture and tried to be well-mannered in any events. She was a woman who put profound meaning of study into action, and lived independent life as a human.
한글편지로 본 공주들의 삶에 대한 고찰 - 17~19세기 효종·현종·숙종, 순조 대 왕실가족 간의 편지를 중심으로

본 연구는 한글편지를 통해 공주들의 실제적 삶을 살펴본 것이다. 왕실에서는 하가下嫁한 공주들의 신변에 일어나는 일상사를 공유하며 희로애락을 함께 하는데, 한글편지를 보면 왕실가족 간의 돈독한 정을 주고받는 모습이 확인된다. 공주는 결혼하기 전 궁궐에서 다양한 여가생활을 즐기는 한편 한자와 한글을 익혔다. 공주들은 한자를 알았지만 일상적으로 사용하는 문자는 한글이었다. 또한 부왕이 직접 딸의 작문수업을 이끌거나 왕비인 어머니가 공주의 서체를 손수 지도하였다. 공주는 혼례 후 별도로 마련된 살림집에서 결혼생활을 했다. 때문에 왕실에서는 공주를 위해 집을 지어주거나 사주었는데, 그 과정에서 각종 폐단이 발생하기도 했다. 공주도 결혼을 하면 아들을 낳아야 하는 책임과 의무감이 뒤따랐다. 부왕이 아이를 잃은 딸의 슬픔을 공감하고 다독거려주는 자상한 아버지의 모습이 편지에 나타나는데, 이는 왕이 공주에게, 남성이 여성에게 보낸 왕실 한글편지 중 유일하다. 공주는 화려한 집과 넉넉한 경제력으로 삶을 풍요롭게 지낼 수 있었다. 하지만 정치적·시대적·개인적 상황에 따라 공주들의 삶과 죽음을 대하는 방식이 달라졌다. This study examined the actual life of princesses through Hangul letters. In the royal family, we share the daily life of the married princesses and share the joy and sorrow. In the Hangul letters it is confirmed that the royal family is exchanging strong affection. Before marriage, the princess enjoyed various leisure activities in the palace and learned Chinese characters and Hangul. The princesses knew Chinese characters, but the characters they used routinely were Hangul. In addition, the father led his daughter"s writing class directly or the mother, who was a queen, directly led the princess"s typeface. The princess married at a separate house after the wedding. Therefore, the royal family built or bought a house for the princess, and various kinds of closure occurred in the process. The princess also had a sense of responsibility and duty to have a son when she married. The letter shows the image of a caring father who sympathizes with and repents of the sadness of his daughter, who lost her child, which is the only royal Hangul letters sent to the princess by the king and to the woman by the man. The princess was able to enrich her life with a colorful house and generous economic power. However, it was found that the way of dealing with the lives and deaths of princesses was changed according to political, time and personal circumstances.
The Genre-based Writing Instruction in EFL

This paper points out the potential usefulness of genre-based writing instruction in EFL. Genre has been proved to serve as an influential and useful writing tool for both learning and teaching. For learners, especially at the low level of proficiency or in EFL, genre can be a framework,or scaffolding for the production of meaningful passages within a specific context. It is also a useful tool for teachers, who are expected to give a practical and constructive guideline to students. For the effective application of genre-based instruction to writing class, this paper suggests four stages of writing lesson process and shows some guideline of genre-focused writing instruction. Through the examples of genrebased writing instruction, it shows how the genre-based writing instruction operates and encourages active teacher-student negotiation and cooperation. It also suggests some ways to overcome the limitation of the genre-based writing instruction by making genre an open frame enough to lead to creative thinking in the process of writing.

본 연구는 연극성이 높은 그림책을 활용하여 초등영어 연극교육의 활성화 방안에 대해 다음과 같은 논의사항을 담고 있다. 첫째, ‘연극교육’과‘교육연극’은 지향하는 목적에 따라 실행 방법, 수업 과정, 기대효과가 각기 다른 독립적인 영역임에도 불구하고 연극수업 운영에 수반하는 현실적 문제로 인해 교육연극을 상대적으로 많이 활용하는 초등영어 연극교육의 현 상황을 진단하고, ‘영어교육을 위한’ 연극에서 ‘연극을 중심에 둔’ 영어교육으로의 방향 전환을 통해 학습자의 경험 공간을 확장해야 한다는 점을 주장한다. 둘째, 초등영어수업에서 연극을 중심으로 한 연극수업의 장점과 효과에 대한 고찰을 한다. 특히 연극을 중심에 둔 초등영어수업은 현재의 초등영어교육의 고질적인 문제점에 대한 적극적인 해결방법이 될 수 있고, 동시에 미래역량 개발에 긍정적인 도움이 된다는 점을 강조한다. 셋째, 초등영어수업에서 손쉽고 적극적으로 무대중심 연극수업을 운영할 방법으로 연극성이 높은 그림책을 활용할 것을 제안한다. 연극교육의 운영과 실행이란 관점에서 연극성을 정의하고, 이를 근거로 연극수업에 적합한 그림책 선정기준 및 특징을 제시한다. 마지막으로, 초등영어 연극수업을 계획하는 교사가 안정적으로 지속 가능한 연극수업을 운영하는 데 참고가 될 수 있도록 연극성 높은 그림책을 소개하고, 그 쓰임새를 기술한다. This study discusses the following issues related to the activation of elementary English drama education using picture books with high theatricality. First, it diagnoses the current situation in which drama classes are excessively biased toward educational drama due to practical problems such as lack of time, inconvenience of operation, and lack of teacher expertise or experience, and argues that a balanced approach is needed by shifting the focus from drama ‘for English education’ to ‘drama-centered’ English education to expand the learner’s experience space. Second, it examines the advantages and effects of drama-centered drama classes in elementary English classes. In particular, it emphasizes that stage-centered elementary English drama classes can be an active solution to the chronic problems of current elementary English education and, at the same time, can contribute positively to the development of future capabilities. Third, it proposes the use of picture books with high theatricality as a method to easily and actively operate performance-centered drama classes in elementary English classes. It defines theatricality from the perspective of the operation and implementation of drama education, and based on this, it suggests the criteria and characteristics of picture books suitable for drama classes. Lastly, we introduce picture books with high theatricality and explain how to use them so that teachers can refer to them for stable and sustainable English drama class operation.
