Facilitated propylene transport in poly(butyl methacrylate) membrane containing silver salt

It has been well known that silver ion reacts with olefin to form complex. In this study, we attempted to study facilitated propylene transport membrane using silver salt. Silver triflate (AgCF3SO3) and poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) were chosen as silver salt and polymer matrix, respectively. Carbonyl group in PBMA can stabilize silver ion in solid-state without water. In FT-IR spectrum, a peak at 1728 cm-1 and shoulder at lower wave number were shown. The former was related to carbonyl group itself and the latter was related to carbonyl group complexed with silver ion. Therefore the FT-IR spectrum indicated that silver ions were stabilized by carbonyl groups. Dense PBMA membranes showed that propylene permeability increased over 6 times but propane permeability rarely increased as mole ratio of silver salt increased. Perm-selectivity also increased over 5 times due to facilitated propylene transport by silver ion. In addition to that, apparent diffusion coefficients decreased and this trend is typical feature in diffusion with reaction.
