In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

Fire inside light" railway transit(LRT) was simulated for various fire scenarios using CFD analysis in order to assess the safety .of passengers. Considered in the present paper are the effects of locations of fire, a fire size, an operation of ventilation system and an opening time of door on evolution of temperature and smoke concentration inside the LRT. For fire simulation, fire cells releasing heat and smoke corresponding to fire size were positioned at the location of fire. From the results, it is seen that the ventilation system and the opening time of door were the most important factors on temperature and smoke concentration inside the LRT.

Transient flow inside a hollow shaft of a Gas Turbine engine during sudden engine stop may result in non uniform heat transfer coefficients in the shaft due to flow instability similar to steady Taylor vortex, which may decrease the lifetime of the shaft. In the present study, transient Taylor vortex phenomena inside a suddenly stopped hollow shaft are studied analytically. Flow visualization is also performed to study the shape and onset time of Taylor Vortices for various initial rotational speed.

A pre/post processor program based GUI(Graphic User Interface) by using the MFC and OpenGL library in the Windows OS have been developed for the analysis of the passenger flow. Using this program, users are able to generate and modify the meshes of multi-storied subway station, set all the parameters for the solver, and obtain the results of the simulation such as transient passenger motions and passenger streak lines in 3-dimensional graphic view.

In the present study, a forest fire spread was simulated with a three-dimensional, fully-transient, physics-based, computer simulation program. Physics-based fire simulation is based on the governing equations of fluid dynamics, combustion and heat transfer. The focus of the present study is to perform parametric study to simulate fire spread through flat and inclined wildland with vegetative fuels like trees or grass. The fire simulation was performed in the range of the wind speeds and degrees of inclination. From the results, the effect of the various parameters of the forest fire on the fire spread behavior was analyzed for the future use of the simulation in the prediction of fire behavior in the complex terrain.

Glass particle distribution in a stirred solid/liquid systems was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The numerical results were compared to experimental data from the available literature which investigated the local dispersed phase volume fraction by means of an endoscope technique, Eulerian multi-phase model and applications considered high loading of solid particle was used to investigate the influence of the particle concentration and mixing tank size on the solid distribution. A good agreement was obtained between the experimental data and simulation results. The results showed different solid particle distribution in an agitator by particle concentration and mixer size.
