The purpose of this research was to evaluate the salivary IgA, serum cortisol level and upper respiratory infection in young soldiers during boot camp. Sixty-five young soldiers who are joining the Army voluntarily participated in this study(ages: 20-22 yr, weight: 59-85 kg). Saliva and blood samples were taken for analysis of IgA and cortisol concentration. The results showed that salivary IgA concentration decreased two weeks later after starting boot camp, and serum cortisol concentration decreased two weeks later and then increased after three weeks. Upper respiratory infection symptoms were developed two weeks later. Based on our results, it could be concluded that boot camp training decreased salivary IgA secretion and serum cortisol level. Decreasing of Salivary IgA concentration could be connected with upper respiratory infection. Key

Results; Seventy nine(43.4%) and 61(27.0%)healthcare providers had experience of trauma care and casualty transfer respectively. One hundred and thirty two(58.4%) healthcare providers experienced trauma care education programs. The overall mean scores of trauma care perceived by the participants were knowledge(4.11±.70), performance level(4.04±.71), and educational needs(3.39±1.24). Knowledge level in trauma care perceived by the participants positively correlated individual ability, units' ability, and performance level. Conclusions; Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop trauma care training program which can promote the competency of pre-hospital trauma care and casualty transfer for healthcare providers working at field units.

Results : The most vulnerable rank associated with suicide related behavior was private first class. The main methods of suicide attempt were poisoning(37%) and knife cutting(30%). About 25% of the total suicide related behavior was assessed as high risk attempt including falling down, firearm, burning oneself. In addition, psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, adjustment disorder were suspected with these patients. Media diffusion of stories about suicide was shown to increase the suicide related behavior in military personnel. Biological events or any accidents related to CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear) materials remains a great threat to the safety of the public as well as armed forces in the Republic of Korea. The H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2009 and the recent Ebola outbreak clearly demonstrate that the emerging infectious disease can cross borders and bring public health emergency to any part of the world. The current need for biosurveillance, defined as the process of collecting, integrating, interpreting, and communicating essential information related to all-hazards threats or disease activity, is greater than ever. National effort to enhance disease surveillance is mainly led by Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). KCDC operates Notifiable Disease Reporting System as well as Emergency Room Syndromic Surveillance System and Infectious Disease Specialist Network. As a part of international biosurveillance effort, Republic of Korea (ROK) Ministry of National Defense has made a project agreement with United States (US) Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD) to develop Biosurveillance Portal that can provide a set of tools and capabilities to facilitate timely identification and detection of biological events to minimize operational impacts to ROK-US Forces in Korean peninsula. As a part of this project, Armed Forces Medical Command (AFMC) undertook the initiative to construct the Military Active Real-time Syndromic Surveillance (MARSS) system. A few examples of the global effort for biosurveillance system includes:1) Biosense 2.0 by Center for Disease Control and Prevention to provide local, state and federal governments a timely regional and national picture of trends in disease syndromes and situation awareness, 2) BioCaster by Japan, and 3) Health Emergency & Disease Information System (HEDIS) by European Union. In the threat of all potential hazards, well-integrated national biosurveillance system can provide decision makers at all level with critical and essential information. In order to achieve an integrated biosurveillance system, active participation across governmental agencies and unified support from public health infrastructures and human resources are utmost important.
