Nonlinear Model-based Control of Vane Type Continuous Variable Valve Timing System

The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system for high performance is a key technology used in newly developed engines. The system realizes higher torque, better fuel economy, and lower emissions by allowing an additional degree of freedom in valve timing during engine operation. In this study, a model-based control method is proposed to enable a fast and precise VVT control system that is robust with respect to manufacturing tolerances and aging. The VVT system is modeled by a third-order nonlinear state equation intended to account for nonlinearities of the system. Based on the model, a controller is designed for position control of the VVT system. The sliding mode theory is applied to controller design to overcome model uncertainties and unknown disturbances. The experimental results suggest that the proposed sliding mode controller is capable of improving tracking performance. In addition, the sliding mode controller is robust to battery voltage disturbance.

This is a study on a test system newly developed for analyzing the shift pattern of a manual transmission vehicle. This system which is called a Computer Aided Shift-survey System(CASS) can be used to develop a representative shift pattern for the EPA fuel economy test as well as for the catalytic converter durability test.<br/> The CASS mainly consists of a microcontroller(68HCll) and a notebook computer. It monitors gear position and vehicle speed by optical sensors. Whenever a driver shifts a gear, the CASS analyzes the shift pattern in real-time. The real-time processing test version is completed and shows satisfactory performances, and the final version which can perform post-processing as welt as real-time processing is being developed.<br/>

A test system for analyzing the shift pattern of a manual transmission vehicle was newly developed and tested. This system which is called a Computer Aided Shift-survey System(CASS) can be used to develop a representative shift pattern for the EPA fuel economy test as well as for the catalytic converter durability test.<br/> The CASS is a stand-alone system based on the 68HC11 microcontroller, and it also works with a personal computer. The CASS monitors and records the gear position, vehicle speed and engine speed by optical sensors. After finishing the test, the CASS can analyze the shift pattern. Both the real-time processing and the post processing function are available.<br/> During the test in the United States, the CASS is proved to be an efficint computer aided test system in terms of ease of use, accuracy of the data, and reliability of the system.<br/>
