Vol.19 No.3

In the Bupyeong district, Mesozoic pyroclastic rocks, intrusive breccia, granites and felsic porphyries comprise a volcano-plutonic complex, overlying and intruding the Precambrian Gyeonggi gneiss complex. pyroclastic rocks, consisted mainly of rhyolitic welded tuffs, form a topographic circular structure about 10 kilometers in diameter. Granites and felsic porphyries which intruded the pyroclastic rocks are distributed in the inner side and also along the outer margin of the circular structure. K-Ar ages of two granite bodies(biotite), 162 and $148{\pm}7$ Ma, and that of the intrusive rhyolite (whole rock), $121{\pm}6$ Ma indicate that a series of volcano-plutonic igneous activity occurred between Jurassic and early Cretaceous age. Petrochemical characteristics suggest that the pyroclastic rocks, granites and felsic porphyries were originated from the comagmatic source. From the evidences of field occurrence, petrochemical and geochronological characteristics of igneous rocks and the geologic structures, it is believed that the igneous rocks in the Bupyeong district were formed during a Jurassic to early Cretaceous resurgent caldera evolution.

Vol.20 No.2

The geology of the Bupyeong mine area is consisted of Precambrian Gyeonggi gneiss complex and Mesozoic igneous rocks; i.e., pyroclastic rocks, intrusive breccia, granite and felsic porphyries which were formed during a Jurassic to early Cretaceous resurgent caldera evolution. Granites are not observed on the surface and in the underground of the mine. Bupyeong silver deposits occur as stockworks of base metal sulfides- minor silver minerals-quartz - carbonate veinlets, hosted by pyroclastic rocks and intrusive breccia at the southwestern margin of the caldera. Silver occurs mainly as native silver, and other silver minerals, minor in quantity, are argentite, tetrahedrite-freibergite, pyrargyrite, polybasite, canfieldite and dyscrasite. The average grade of silver ore is about 180g/t Ag. Discrimination of silver ore from the country rocks depends largely on the chemical analyses of rock samples taken every two meters from tunnels, diamond-drilling cores and mining stopes, because silver minerals are hardly observed in the ore by crude eye, and silver orebodies do not properly coincide with the concentrated zone of base metal sulfides which were precipitated at the earlier stage than the stage of precipitation of native silver. General characteristics of the loci of the silver orebodies are as follows; (1) The host rocks of orebodies are pyroclastic rocks and intrusive breccia. (2) Many of the orebodies are distributed around Gyeonggi gneiss complex. Especially where the paleotopography of gneiss complex shows a gradual slope, the basal stratigraphic horizon of the pyroclastic rocks unconformably overlying the gneiss complex offered a favorable loci of high grade ore. (3) $N5^{\circ}W$ to $N15^{\circ}$ E-striking faults played an important role in the localization of the orebodies. (4) Conduits of intrusive breccia within the gneiss complex, through which the intrusive breccia intruded into the upper pyroclastic rocks, exist beneath most of the main orebodies. This suggests that the conduits of intrusive breccia served as channelways for the migration of ore fluids.

Vol.20 No.4

Muguk gold deposits are composed of quartz veins emplaced along faults in Mesozoic granodiorite. General strikes and dips of the veins are $N15{\sim}20^{\circ}W$ and $70{\sim}80^{\circ}NE$. Associated ore minerals are pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, native silver, argentite, tetrahedrite and electrum. Vein mineral paragenesis is complicated by repeated fracturing, but five distinct depositional stages can be recognized. Electrum grains are associated mainly with sulfide bands formed along both margins of pale pink quartz of stage 3, and with patches of pyrite aggregate of stage 4. Before the close down in 1972, Muguk gold mine yielded more than 8 tons of gold of which major portion was produced from the No.2 vein. No.2 vein, extending about 1,500m laterally, was exploited to a depth of about 750m. In 1984, Young-poong mining company acquired the mining property and began geologic mapping, geochemical and geophysical exploration, diamond drilling and exploration tunnelling around the mine area to seek for other rich gold-bearing quartz veins. As the Samhyungje vein was disclosed to be the most rich vein, exploration works were focussed on the Samhyungje vein. As of August 1987, 22,338m of diamond drilling and 9,652m of exploration tunnelling have been undertaken. Owing to the successful result of exploration, the Muguk mine commenced normal operation on January 1987, treating 5,500 tons of ore per month.

Vol.23 No.5

β'-Sialon with different compositions was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of compacts containing kaolin graphite and silicon or aluminum at temperature of 1300-1450℃ under flowing gas of 90% N2-10% H2 or 20hrs. Quantitative analysis of minerals which were formed in the specimens was carried out by using the calibration curve which has been prepared from X-ray diffraction patterns. The obtained results were as follows : 1. In the formation of β'-Sialon by carbothermal reduction-nutridation of Si-Al-O-C system mixtures at 1400℃ for 20hrs. (2) β'-Sialon as a major mineral and α-Al2O3 as a minor mineral were identified in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin and graphite. (3)α-Al2O3 and 15R as a minor minerals were measured in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin aluminum and graphite. (4) AlN instead of α-Al2O3 and 15R was formed in the compacts that excess graphite(=35 wt%) was added to the mixture of kaolin and aluminium. 2. As the reaction time and temperature were increased the formation of β'-Sialon was increased whereas the phases of mllite SiC and Si2ON2 were decreased gradually.

Vol.9 No.1

Aluminum hydrates were synthesized using $AlCl_3$.$6H_2O$as starting material by precipitation method. The phases of obtained powder were amorphous, boehmite, bayerite, nordstrandite depending on the pH of solutions. Aluminum hydrates transformed to $\alpha-Al_2O_3$via $\gamma$- $Al_2O_3$,$\delta$- $Al_2O_3$,and $\theta$-$Al_2O_3$,and particle sizes were grown by increment of heating temperature. The $\gamma$- $Al_2O_3$ powder was coated on intermediate layer of ceramic membrane by the dip-coating method, and unsupported membrane was also prepared for comparison. The supported layer showed porous structure with small grains, but the unsupported layer revealed interconnected larger grains. Grain growth is dominant in the unsupported layer than in the supported one.
