The purpose of this study is to find a direct correlation between Tasan Cheong Yak-yong ’s Catholic faith and his scientific activities. For this purpose, this study reviews Tasan Cheong Yak-yong’s life by dividing it into four periods - Pre-Faith, Faith, Apostasy and Synthesis period - based on the changes in his life along with the acceptance and growth of Catholic faith. After his childhood of Pre-Faith (not knowing about the religion), Cheong Yak-yong accepted Catholic in the Faith period and had a golden age of his life as a Confucian Scholar with the support from King Jong-jo. Although there is no direct correlation between his faith and scientific achievements during the Faith period, this study presumes that his Catholic faith brought a sort of transition to his worldview based on the Confucianism where his values and facts were mingled together. Apostasy period was the worst time for Cheong Yak-yong as he kept being exiled, but in this period he showed excellent writing activities in various fields including science. Even though no traces of faith can be found in the Apostasy period, it was the period of raising the fiercest questions about theology for him. Thus, this study conversely presumes that such fiercest questions and searches for theology led him to his brilliant writing. It may be improper to assure how faithful he was during the Synthesis period; however, given that two of his best three books were written in this period, this period is considered the time for him to integrate all of his knowledge, life and faith. His life itself, gazing around and hesitating all the time just like his another name Yeoyudang (with a meaning of living carefully), remains a classic to us, giving new answers to the questions being asked in this age. In that sense, his life itself that hesitated between martyrdom and apostasy is another form of a martyr"s life.
