Though Korean division has caused a lot of pains and sufferings, peaceful reunification seems to be far away not only in political and institutional dimensions but also in social and cultural dimensions. UNFPA estimates that the current population of both South Korea and North Korea is around 75,00 millions. If peaceful reunification would come, could there be a real reunification? A touchstone of this question is to examine how North Korean refugees settle down in South Korea, that is, what kind of relation and community they have with South Koreans. However, some current phenomena seem to give us a negative answer. For example, there are hardly found Korean Christians in a church consisting of North Korean refugees. And North Korean refugees seem not to settle down within diocese or parish groups in South Korean churches. According to the 2014 research of Korean Hana Foundation, North Korean refugees` difficulties and sufferings are muti-dimensional, muti-faceted, and muti-layered. And these are even compounded and aggravated by their experiences of discrimination, disregard, and exclusion. Thus North Korean refugees need warmer welcoming, hospitality, social embrace, economic consideration, cultural mutual understanding, and so on, which would help them overcome their own difficulties and sufferings more easily. This paper provides a theological vision of overcoming this social conundrum in terms of some insights from contemporary trinitarian theology. A trinitarian theology of peaceful reunification, grounded in the togetherness, openness, and mutual indwelling of the triune God, provides significant principles of relation/community and openness/embrace for human existence and society. There principles could enhance and foster a mutual understanding and embrace between South Koreans and North Korean refugees not only in churches but also in society, and would create considerable effects for overcoming the current issue.

This paper investigates Paul Tillich’s understanding of the Trinity. A careful analysis of Tillich’s statements has enabled us to point out three characteristics of the Trinity. First, his theological system is trinitar-ianly structured, where all the parts are closely and indirectly related with each other under a dynamic unity. Second, he has a symbolic understanding of the Trinity. And the last is his understanding of dialectical Trinity, which is based on his emphasis on the dialectic of divine life. In this paper each of them can be expressed as “Structural or Methodological Trinity,” “Symbolic Trinity,” and “Dialectical Trinity.” Through this analysis and observation, this paper argues that Tillich’s understanding of the Trinity is in a tension between its symbolic and dialectical characteristics under a trinitarian structure of system. Thus his understanding of the Trinity can be considered not to be closed but to be open. However, despite some strengths of Paul Tillich’s position, his symbolic and dialectical understanding of the Trinity has some limits which occurred many debates.

A multicultural society refers to a society where the number of foreign residents exceeds 5% of the whole population. At the end of 2018, Korea has around 2.34 million foreign residents, which was more than 4.5% of the entire population. Considering the steep increase until now, Korea would soon go beyond 5% in the number to be a multicultural society, However, an awareness about multiculture in Korean society and people is very low. According to a survey by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on ‘Korean Acceptance of Multiculture,’ only 36% of the whole pop-ulation agree to multicultural coexistence, which is markedly low in comparison to 74% in Europe. Thus Korean society and church are required to improve their awareness of multiculture greatly. Considering such a point, this paper tries to seek “a Trinitarian Multicultural Theological Anthropology.” First, it examines several statistical survey data to grasp Korean current situation in terms of multiculture. Then, while examining biblical and church historical discussions on multiculture, it provides an outline of a trinitarian multicultural theology. Finally, it goes further to seek a trinitarian multicultural theological anthropology. The Trinity is a multicultural God, and the whole world created by the Triune God is itself multicultural. Multiculture itself is the essence and characteristic of the Triune God, and it is also a principle of human beings and society. In this regard, multiculture is both possibility and appro-priateness of the world. Thus anthropology as an exploration of human identity should be also trinitarian and multicultural. This paper could contribute greatly to the spread of Korean awareness about a multicultural society in terms of openness, relation-ality, diversity, and universality, thereby enriching Korean society and church mentally. And it, in turn, could contribute much to solve deep-rooted problems of Korean society and church, by trans-forming their vertical hierarchy into horizontal structure of mutual respect in order that they might manifest the aspects of the Kingdom of God more fully.
