Core/shell acrylic microgels were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The core is slightly crosslinked by a difunctional monomer and the shell contains a sufficient amount of carboxyl groups which are partially or fully neutralized by amines. After neutralization, sufficient pseudoplastic flow behavior due to the mutual interaction of the polymer particles at low solid contents below 20 w.t.% in the final metallic basecoat paint can be achieved. As a results, the orientation of aluminium flakes with the extreme shrinkage of low solids metallic basecoat during flash-off time is parallel to the surface of substrate(flop effect). Dynamic rheological property was also found to influence the flop effect of metallic basecoats.

Architectural paint is used commonly to improve appearance and protection of materials. In order to protect architectural materials. the paint should have high water resistance and water vapor permeability. However, high water vapor permeability is expected to give low water resistance. One approach to overcome that contradiction is to blend latex with high water resistance and microgel with high hydrophilicity. In this paper, the effect of mixing ratio and composition in latex and microgel blend film on water vapor permeability was investigated. We measured water vapor permeability as a function of microgel content in two blend systems, latex1/microgel and latex2/microgel. The results showed that the water vapor permeability increased as microgel content rose. The reason is that the microgel have more hydrophylic functional group on its sheath than latex.

Architectural paint is used commonly to improve appearance and protection of materials. Desirable requirements for paint as a architectural material are high water vapor permeability, water resistance and staining resistance. In this study, we investigated the effect of monomer composition of latex on water vapor permeability, water absorption and staining resistance. The results showed that water vapor permeability and staining resistance of latex containing acrylonitrile(AN) were better than those containing methyl methacrylate(MMA), styrene monomer(SM).
