How to define 'parts of speech' in English language? Do the terms 'partes orationes,' 'Wortklass,' 'classe des mots,' 'parts of speech,' '品詞' and '씨갈' have shades of meaning in reality? What made us, in Modern English, assoclate 'parts of speech' with the numerical conception 8: eight parts of speech? Were there any classification other than the conventional numerical obsession 'eight'? Greek grammarian Aristotle proposed three parts of speech while Latin grammarian Varro sorted words into four parts of speech. Language differs also in the fundamental classification of their words; many langages even lack some or most of parts of speech. It implies no one can assert that the concept of parts of speech necessarily exist universally in any language. It does appear explicitly, in general, within the scope of Indo-European family of language as a specific grammatical category. Thrax classified words into eight categories but his classification includes article and participle, excluding the current adjective and interjection. G. Brown has ten parts of speech including article and participle to our eight which was originated by J. Priestley. On the other hand, O. Jespersen worked out three-rank theory: primary, secondary, tertiary. In the course of grammar history, as far as English is concerned, the initial endeavor to classify words according to meaning was replaced by another trial to sort them in accordance with the relation between word and word, and then developed into the third exertion to distinguish on the basis of function and form which is a very scientific and convincing approach. P. Roberts rightly pointed out that the traditional method of parts of speech has no way of explaining such sentences asIt's time to stop. Is it true that he died? That is his cat. What is his in the last sentence, expecially? Who can definitely assert that it is a pronominal adjective or an adjectival pronoun? C.C. Fries designated four words of classes with as many as fifteen subdivided groups of function words. In this paper, I claim that the present classification of parts of speech, though with some irrelevances and controyersies, is rather ideal way, provided each word can find its classifying criterion with peculiar morphological and syntactical characteristics in the sentences. In short, while we discuss the parts of speech in English, much more weight should be given to the syntactical considerations because the deciding factor lies rather in the syntactical functions than in the morphological elements.

Compared with the mutagenic activity in urine of ordinary 15 workers, t hat in urine of 32 workers who were working at a ru- bber coating factory was investigated by use of Salmonella typh- imurium TA 98 and TA 100. The results were as follow: 1. The average mutagenic activity in urine of the exposed work- ers on TA 98 was 55.5+ 47.2, which was very higher than that of the unexposed workers, 17.1±29.4. 2. On TA 100 was 386.3+ 200.8, which was very higher than that of the unexposed workers, 164.1+108.3. 3. Among the exposed workers, the mutagenic activity of smoking workers was higher than of non - smoking ones.
