Effects of coating treatment of metallic film on SiC particles on wetting behavior of liquid Al on SiC were studied. Experimental variables are included types of coated metallic films such as Ni, Cu, and Ag, and temperatures of heat-treatment under vacuum. Model experiments were performed using coarse SiC particles to observe the wetting phenomenon, and Al-SiC_P composites are prepared by powder metallurgical techniques to test mechanical properties. Analysing the experimental results concerning wetting phenomena of liquid Al on SiC, it was found that coating treatment of metallic film on SiC particles seriously improves the wetting behavior of liquid Al on SiC, especially in case of Ni coating. The tensile strength of Al-SiC_P composites made of coated SiC particles showed also higher value than the specimens made of non-coated SiC particles even though the coating treatment was not perfect.

The wetting phenomena between A1 matrix and metal coated SiC fiber have been studied at 670℃ for 15 min-60 min under vacuum. SiC fibers were coated about 1000Å thickness with Ag, Cu, and Ni metal in high vacuum evaporator. The wetting behavior of Al/metallic thin film/SiC fiber was analysed by SEM, AES, and XRD. The wettability of metal coated SiC fibers was better than as-recieved SiC fiber, especially Ag and Cu coated SiC fibers were more effective. It was considered Chat the driving force for wetting was increased by interfacial reaction between metallic thin film and Al melt. When interfacial reaction involved the eutectic reaction, the interfacial free energy was sufficiently reduced to improve the wetting behavior, and aluminum oxide film was easily broken down by eutectic melt. The wetting behavior of as-recieved SiC fiber was not uniform and the contact angle was larger than 90°.
Fe-Cu 계에서 Cu 가 Coating 된 Fe 분말 압분체의 치수팽창 현상에 관한 연구

The swelling and alloying behaviour of ferrous metal powder compacts have been studied using TMA(thermomechanical analysis) and optical microscope. Binary Fe-Cu compacts containing 3wt% Cu and up to 7wt% Cu were prepared from blends of Fe and Cu powders, and Cu coated Fe powders respectively. The TMA observations indicated that penetration of Cu-liquid phase into Fe particle and grain boundary leads to swelling of the powder compacts during heating and early stage of isothermal sintering at 1150˚C. Those swelling can be suppressed by using Cu coated Fe powder. The alloying process was accompanied by grain boundary penetration of Cu-rich liquid phase.

Pore filling processes were observed during iiquid phase sintering in Co-Cu alloy. And the experimental results were compared with the theoretical results of Park's theory. The spherical Cu powder and the Cu wire were used for forming the artificial pores. The Cu contents of the green compacts were varied from 28 wt% to 32 wt% of Cu and the green compacts were sintered in a dried hydrogen atmosphere for various sintering time at 1200℃. The distributions of gram size and pore size were estimated by image analyzer. The experimental results showed that the pore filling processes by liquid phase were agree to some extent with the theoretical estimate. But for the large spherical pores and the cylindrical pores in 72Co-28Cu alloy were not consistant with the theoretical results. Those large pores were shrunken slowly during the prolonged sintering and the shrunken phenomena of the cylindrical pores were investigated.

Melt-textured growth of the YBa2Cu3O7-x phase from a supercooled melt created locally aligned, barshaped grains of the orthorhombic 1-2-3 phase. Based on all the observed phenomena, the gross mechanism of the melt-textrued growth of YBa2Cu3O7-x on the (100) plane of MgO was delineated by three basic patterns of reactions. These are : (ⅰ) formation of the aligned 1-2-3 phase and the Y-rich 2-1-1 phase at the bulk region away from the (100) plane of MgO ; (ⅱ) formation of the Cu-richprecipitates at the interfacial region by the selective interface-induced precipitation of the liquid phase ; (ⅲ) condensation reaction of the entrapped Cu-rich vapor with Mg atoms during the initial stage of rapid cooling from 130$0^{\circ}C$ to 98$0^{\circ}C$.
