In this study, we produced silicon through a carbothermal reduction process using a CO₂ laser beam as a heat source. After the laser beam radiation on a silica and carbon black mixture, shallow brown powders were found on the surface of the sample. The brown area was inspected using Raman spectroscopy and a clear peak of crystalline silicon was detected, indicating successful carbothermal reduction of silica. The effects of process parameters such as laser beam power, irradiation time, nitrogen gas flow in the reaction chamber and the silica/carbon black molar ratio are explained in detail. Our research may suggest a new method for extracting silicon from silica and carbon materials in a very fast and efficient way and this could be a starting point for another silicon application in the future.
