A lot of children appear in Charles Dickens’s novels. Some of them are heroes or heroines, and the others are minor characters working for the plots. But almost all of them appeal to the reader’s sentiments, sometimes looking pitiful or even pathetic. Critics have been harsh on this characteristic o f unrealistic portraits o f children. Approached differently, however, this aspect is Dickens’s way of criticizing Victorian society, and in this sense all children in his novels work as a vehicle that runs toward readers’ consciousness, awakening their new perception of reality. The children, especially the main characters, reflect the past that the Victorian readers once had had and then forgotten; the readers see how they lost their innocence or how their reality changed them. Minor characters also suggest various kinds of contemporary social problems. In the end, all the children in Dickens’s novels represent his views that voice social reform.
Vol.67 No.1
Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel whose background is the French Revolution. But it has been disputed over its historicity because the stream of time is somewhat distorted. This paper argues that the Revolution is a mere background, and that time, especially the past and the present, plays a functional role in leading to the last scene heavily loaded with powerful emotional catharsis. All the characters in the novel live their present lives encroached with past memories, and there is no way out of this state. The only way the novel suggests is a violent, destructive twist of fate, which is embodied in Sydney Carton’s sacrificial death for Charles Darney in the level of the plot, and which is materialized in the ambiguity toward the time stream in the level of the narrative. The French Revolution is used as a background not for its historical meaning, but for the atmosphere of violence and destructiveness that it arouses. A Tale of Two Cities distinctively features the emotional effects of the historical event rather than its historical meanings.
Positioning Ouida at the Turn of the Century
Vol.51 No.1
This paper attempts to reassess a neglected sensation novelist, Ouida, by reading her life and writings. Ouida is usually remembered as a writer who argued against Sarah Grand on the issue of the New Woman, and as one who strongly stood against the New Woman movements. However, in a certain sense, her life itself is that of an independent, self-assertive woman, and in many of her writings appear those women whose life challenges and even completely destroys the male-oriented traditional values and codes of conduct. In fact, her life even can be seen as the materialization of the characteristics of the New Woman while herself luxuriously enjoying the values endowed only on males. In this sense, I would like to suggest we accept Ouida as a hybrid of the Victorian traditional values and the New Woman instead of discarding her as one who is strongly opposed to the New Woman and whose work is not worth a serious discussion.
