        Ectopically Expressed Membrane-bound Form of IL-9 Exerts Immune-stimulatory Effect on CT26 Colon Carcinoma Cells

        IL-9 is a known T cell growth factor with pleiotropic immunological functions, especially in parasite infection and colitis. However, its role in tumor growth is controversial. In this study, we generated tumor clones expressing the membrane-bound form of IL-9 (MB-IL-9) and investigated their influences on immune system. MB-IL-9 tumor clones showed reduced tumorigenicity but shortened survival accompanied with severe body weight loss in mice. MB-IL-9 expression on tumor cells had no effect on cell proliferation or major histocompatibility complex class I expression in vitro. MB-IL-9 tumor clones were effective in amplifying CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and increasing cytotoxic activity against CT26 cells in vivo. We also observed a prominent reduction in body weights and survival period of mice injected intraperitoneally with MB-IL-9 clones compared with control groups. Ratios of IL-17 to interferon (IFN)-γ in serum level and tumor mass were higher in mice implanted with MB-IL-9 tumor clones than those observed in mice implanted with control cells. These results indicate that the ectopic expression of the MB-IL-9 on tumor cells exerts an immune-stimulatory effect with toxicity. To exploit its benefits as a tumor vaccine, a strategy to control the toxicity of MB-IL-9 tumor clones should be developed.

        Korean University EFL Students` Perceived Barriers to Classroom Participation

        Language professionals frequently discuss and stress the importance of classroom participation and its role in the process of language learning, but few language researchers have actually investigated the construct proper in terms of the effect of learners’ perception on it. Using a qualitative inquiry, this article examines EFL students’ classroom participation with special attention to their perceived barriers to their engagement in classroom discourse. Content analysis was employed to examine the respondents’ interview data. Key findings address sources of non-participation in the EFL classroom or barriers to classroom participation, which may translate into variables both internal and external, to EFL learners’ involvement in classroom discourse. The findings here go beyond the importance of simple classroom participation. Classroom participation is not a singular construct. Rather, when conceived as multidimensional, it demands scrutiny within a holistic framework. Classroom language learners need to be encouraged to exercise control over their own interactive classroom participation by increasing the awareness that they are fully responsible for their own learning.

        Effect of 3 - aminobenzamide on DNA Replication in CHO Cells Exposed to MMS

        Effects of 3-aminobenzamide (3AB) on DNA replication was investigated in CHO cells treated with MMS by alkaline sucrose gradient sedimentation analysis. The inhibitor produced a dose-dependent decrease in the rate of DNA replication. The inhibitor did not seem to affect the specific step of DNA replication, but decreased the number of active replicon, which can accomplish DNA replication. Since 3-AB increased MMS-induced DNA strand breaks and significantly retarded the rejoining of strand breaks, we examined the possibility that single strand breaks enhanced by 3-AB may influence the pattern of DNA replication in the presence of MMS.

        Solvent Sublation of Trace Noble Metals by Formation of Metal Complexes with 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole

        A solvent sublation has been studied for the determination of trace Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II) in waste water with their complexes of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Experimental conditions such as the concentration of HCl, the amount of MBT as a ligand, the type and amount of surfactants, bubbling rate and time, and the type of organic solvent were optimized for the solvent sublation, i.e., 25.0 mL of 2.0 M HCl solution and 30mL of 0.4%(w/v) MBT ethanolic solution were added to a 1.0 L sample to form stable complexes. The addition of 4.0 mL of 1 ${\times}$$10^{-3}$ M CTAB (cetyltrimehtylammonium bromide) solution was needed for the effective flotation accomplished by bubbling nitrogen gas at the rate of 40.0 mL/min for 35 minutes. As a solvent, 20.0 mL of MIBK (methylisobuthylketone) was used to extract the floated complexes. The procedure was applied to three kinds of waste waters. Au(III) was determined as 0.68 ng/mL and 0.98 ng/mL respectively for final washed water of two plating industries in Banwol. Pd(II) and Pt(IV) were not detected in any of the three samples. The recovery, which was obtained with analyte-spiked samples, were 95-120%.

      • 컴퓨터 바둑에서 돌의 세기와 영향력 분포에 기반한 형세 평가 시스템

        컴퓨터 바둑에 있어서 형세 평가는 일반화되어 있지 않다. 정확한 평가를 위해서 국면의 변화에 따른 361 자리의 소유 여부를 분명히 할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 바둑의 규칙과 특성을 분석하는 방법으로 그래프 표현을 적용하였으며, 돌의 세기, 영향력, 안정도, 자리값, PM 등의 요소를 정의하여 임의의 국면에 대한 형세를 평가하는 시스템(SES)을 제안하였다. 이는 혹, 백간의 영역 차이를 명백하게 표현하므로 바둑의 전반적인 형세를 평가하는데 매우 효과적이다. 결론적으로 SES는 초반의 형세 평가에 매우 우수하며, 프로기사에 대한 254개의 실전 기보에 대해서 70.9%의 적중률을 보였다. 정석 사례를 구축하여 사용하는 상용 프로그램, Nemesis와 비교 실험한 결과에 의하면, 프로기사에 대한 형세 평가 적중률에 있어서 SES는 Nemesis보다 전체적으로 10% 앞서는 것으로 나타났다. In computer Go, the method evaluating the situation of a face is not generalized. To evaluate the situations all the faces accurately, computer Go must judge owners of 361 positions according the changes of the faces. In this paper, we apply the structure of graph as a method analyzing the rules and characters of Go. The Situation Evaluation System(SES) which can evaluate the situation of a face without DB information oかy using strength of stone(SS), influence power(IP), safety(S), position value(PV), and position-value matrix(PM) is proposed. This system is very effective to evaluate the whole situations of Go because it can show the owner of 361 positions between Black and White. As a result, SES can well compute the situations in the opening game of Go. It makes 70.9% hit-ratio as compared with the practical Go games of professional players. According to the results compared with Nemesis, the commercial program which has the joseki(established stones: hewn sequences of moves near the corner which result in near-equal positions for White and Black), SES is superior to Nemesis by 10% higher in the hit-ratio of situation evaluations of professional players.
