Numerosity perception is considered as an innate ability of human being where its sensivitiy may widely vary across each individual person. The present study explored the relationship between visual working memory (VWM), visual search efficiency, and numerosity sensitivity. To accomplish this, we calculated each participant``s K-value from change detection performance representing one``s storage capacity in VWM, slopes of search RTs representing the search efficiency, and discrimination sensitivity for a quantity difference across two sets of dot arrays representing the numerosity sensitivity. The correlational analysis across the measurements revealed that participants with a high VWM capacity better discriminated the numerosity difference in the arrays when the spatial information in the two dot arrays was preserved. In contrast, the participants with high search efficiency discriminated better the difference in the arrays when the spatial information in the arrays was not preserved. The results indicate high VWM-capacity individuals were presumably able to use a strategy of storing the dot arrays by grouping them into a smaller pattern of dot arrays while high search-efficiency individuals were able to use a strategy of rapidly switching their focused attention across the dots in the arrays to count each individual dot. These in sum suggest that individual differences in numerosity sensitivity rely on one``s working memory capacity as well as their efficient use of switching focused attention.
사대(事大) · 사소(事小)의 정치사상: 『춘추(春秋)』에서 『맹자(孟子)』로
김기연 ( Gi Yeon Kim ) 서울대학교 한국정치연구소 2021 한국정치연구 Vol.30 No.2
This paper explains that Sadae (事大) · Saso (事小), the main concepts of the traditional international order of East Asia, which originated from the West Zhou (西 周) Dynasty, have been used and interpreted differently depending on the context of the times and situations. The earlier studies understand Sadae (事大) · Saso (事小), mentioned in the Confucian texts, the Spring and Autumn Annals and the Mencius, as a principle of coexistence for international peace, and interpret them as not particularly different. In response, this study reveals that the existing studies’ oneway interpretation of Sadae (事大) · Saso (事小) is not valid, and argues that Sadae (事大) · Saso (事小) in the two Confucian texts, which are the results of different historical background and situation, should be interpreted differently. The Spring and Autumn Period aimed at maintaining the international order of status quo in which the power structure between the major and lesser powers does not change amid the demand of the times to restore the ideal international order of the West Zhou Dynasty. After then, it was expected the restoration of the royal family of Zhou. Under these circumstances, the Spring and Autumn Annals, presented an international relationship in which the great and small states mutually served. This was suggested as a way to achieve peaceful coexistence between the great and small states for the sake of the international order of status quo. On the other hand, the Mencius, written against the background of the Warring States Period, was the book of political thoughts that hoped for opening a new era, not restoring old order. Therefore, the context of breaking the international order of status quo that would reshape the Warring States Period’s era should be considered. Mencius did not suggest international relations that the great and small states serve in a bilateral way. He rather presented a neighbor policy that the great or small states served in one direction. This should be seen as a part of Mencius’ unification theory that a true royal sovereign could unify the whole world. It was a methodology that anyone could unify the whole world regardless the state’s size when they carry out the rule of right, but the new era that Mencius planned would gradually move away when it worked in a bilateral manner as it did in the Spring and Autumn Annals.
