This paper presents an inverter-driven induction motor used as the traction motor for a high speed drive system that is required safety, reliability and performance and so on. In the respect of traction motor design, it is mainly showed the weight reduction inclination and characteristic investigation due to V/f driving pattern variation of inverter. Particularly, the reduction of V/f ratio pattern effects on the weight of traction motor and badly on the increase of phase current of traction motor in starting point. This method of weight reduction design have to be reached the decision with not only motor but also the consideration of inverter system because of the heat capacity, weight and material cost of inverter according to the increase of current.

The advantage of the squirrel cage induction motor is the brushless rotor. This advantage for operation and maintenance turns out to be a disadvantage for the detection of the cage rotor bar and endring defects, which means that the detection of cage faults is due to the measurement and analysis of only the stator input signals.<br/> The monitoring task in an inverter drive is complicated mainly because the voltage and current waveforms are nonsinusoidal and the high dv/dt values from fast switching inverterd distort the measurements.<br/> in this paper, we are going to discuss the detection method of broken rotor bar of squirrel cage induction motor by the motor current signal analysis(MCSA).

As a main tractive system of the high speed train, a traction motor is highly required stabilization and reliability for passenger safety and needed a design of lighter weight with compact size for high speed operation. The design technology of the traction motor was developed through the G7 project and verified it by performing strength analysis of rotor and frame which are the main parts of the mechanical design and confirmed by evaluating heat stabilization of the forced ventilation cooling method. The high speed train driven by the developed traction motor could successfully run at the target speed. 350 ㎞/h in the Test Driving on December, 2004, and it is running today for its commercialization in the near future.

An inverter-driven induction motor is used as the traction motor for a high speed drive system that required safty, reliability and performance and so on. rotor bar and end ring of the traction motor are the electrical equipments which form the conductive close loop and then induce current by interaction with the current of stator, the materials selection of rotor bar and end ring are seriously considered in the aspects of electrical and mechanical specification and Motor slip relation to inverter. Particularly motor slip guarantee the safty and reliability of induction motor, this paper show the material selection and the determining of slip in the design of traction motor for high speed train by analyzing the specifications of material being used currently.
