Vol.0 No.51

This study aimed to perform a comprehensive review of the overall research findings on literary geography, and to further discuss the issues and challenges found during the course of the review. The academic terminology associated with literary geography first came to the fore in the early 1990’s when geographers introduced overseas research findings. Literary geography has been studied in earnest in the Korean literature community since the mid-2000‘s. The studies on literary geography have primarily been conducted on the utilization of the underlying logic of geography within literature. To be more specific, Eunsook Lee, Jinyeong Kim, and Seunghui Sim took empirical, humanistic, and structural approaches, respectively, to study the experiences of a place expressed in literary work. Under the currently restricted conditions associated with the excavation of literary sources, as well as the processes required to understand literary works, the outlook of the research on literary geography is not promising. However, using a collaborative research approach, Lee’s study described how places can be urban spaces, immigration spaces, or leisure spaces. Lee’s research on the database of literary space, cultural identity, leisure, and place marketing holds significance in that it shows the possibility and diversity of literary geography research at this point in time. Dongil Cho tried to study literary geography by exploring the history of local or regional literature. Taejun Kim presented the direction of the study of regional culture and the wiring of literature tour by using the terminology “the imagery space” and “the literary geography”. Modern literature researchers from Dongguk University used the concept of representation to interpret the meaning of literary spaces when they co-wrote “Korea’s Modern Literary Geography” in order to express differences between their perceptions and research methods compared to those of geographers. Seungsu Lee proposed a research method for literary spaces by using exegetically historical research and field surveys, adopting the concept of an epical space from anthropology. Hyeokrae Kwon empirically studied the historical evidence of spaces found in a novel, while discussing the relationship between spaces and their accounts, and the storytelling style of the spaces. In literary studies, a more systematic and logical approach is needed for literary geography. It is not sufficient to use terminology such as “the history of local literature” and “the study of regional literature”. More in-depth approaches to spaces and places should be introduced by further developing the concepts of imagery space, representation, epic geography, literature map, and storytelling, while considering discussions of place and sense of place, landscape, and human geography.

Vol.62 No.-

In this study, I examined the development of cultural contents by using the Story of a Refugee Returning Choi Chuk, a Schola from Namwon. The cultural content’s elements of Choi Chuk-jeon are narrative, characters, theme, and place. The narrative of Choi Chuk-jeon is very dramatic because affection and narration are closely related to the development of the 17th century. The characters of Choi Chuk-jeon are various and distinctive such as Choi Chuk, Okyoung, Ming Dynasty soldier Yumoon Yeo etc. The theme of Choi Chuk-jeon is friendly and universal in terms of love, family love, and peace. The background place of Choi Chuk-jeon is attractive because it has Namwon area and East Asia. I presented four things about the direction of Choi Chuk-jeon's cultural contents production. First, it is a method of storytelling Choi Chuk-jeon and publishing it as a liberal arts book by adding human information and visual expression. Based on this book, I described how to develop Choi Chuk-jeon tour products, build a museum of peace themes, and produce TV dramas.

Vol.27 No.-

Japanese mythologist Toshio Takagi(1876-1922) investigated the old stories of Joseon from the early 1910s and picked up the 52 works and published An anthology of Korean educational old stories in 1917. He recorded many types of sodam (laughs), and he showed `aesthetics of humor` in the way of ridicule, comedy, satire, etc. Takagi tries to emphasize the educational and instructional character of the old story of Joseon while adding the qualification of `education`, but the works are not educational or doctrinal. Takagi published the old story of Joseon (Mukashibanashi) in terms of `laughter` and `fun` rather than `educational` factors. Takagi Toshio`s attempt to find the nature or essence of the old story of Joseon in `Haehak (humor)` will be evaluated as a very interesting and important result in modern Korean folk tales and fairy tales.

Vol.30 No.3

The Flower of Kusumo: Indonesian Fairy Tales Collection (1942) contains 20 works written by Japanese author Koide Shyogo in a fairy tale style sentence. Based on culture and emotion, works are largely classified into two types. The first type is a story about gods, fairies, rice, and the sea that Indonesians worship or know well. In the 13 works, there are many depictions of God, and the idea of God is strong. The second type is a story that shows tricksters' performance and notions of good or bad. In the seven works, the aesthetics of satire, a sense of criticism of reality, and a people-oriented personality are well revealed. The Flower of Kusumo is a collection of old stories of colonial states published under the political intention of the Japanese military during the Pacific War. However, other than the 'preface', there were no cases in which political voices were made through the text of the work or the voice of the narrator. In the subject or character of the work, it is not particularly noticeable to be interpreted politically, but rather, the pure literary character stands out. In this regard, it is necessary to take a closer look at The Flower of Kusumo as an Indonesian fairy tales collection in the early modern period and the publication of an Asian fairy tales collection.

Vol.- No.47

This thesis examines recent trends in literary geography research being conducted in the fields of Korean literature and geography, and discusses research prospects. In the study of the literary space of the geography research, the direction of the research topic has changed from ‘explanation of the landscape and grasping geographic information ’ to ‘focusing on the dynamics and product value of the literary space ’ . In addition, I reviewed the research cases of place marketing, DB work in literature space, and information and communication utilization. In literary research, it is found that research on sense of place and image space through literary space, educational use cases, travel literature and travel experiences are actively taking place. The prospect of research on literary geography needs to be found in terms of first, in-depth interpretation of literary space’s sense of place, storytelling based on this, and use of contents. Second, a geography researcher and a Korean literature researcher comprehensively grasp the literary space and do dictionary work and database work. It is necessary to work together to produce digital contents using information and communication technology. In terms of research, utilization, and expression of literary geography, it is necessary for literature researchers, geography researchers, cultural contents studies, tourism management studies, humanities and information science researchers to discuss, collaborate, and conduct fusion research. In this case, practical research results of literary geography research will come out.

The various types of wandering done by the characters described in Choi Cheok Jeon are influenced both by the writer's own personal experiences and the historical realities of the time. There are three types of wandering described in Choi Cheok Jeon. The first type of wandering is the wandering of the refugee. When he came to Ming, Choi Cheok was escaping the reality of having lost his family. However, he did not settle anywhere at all. Similarly, the old Hu-geum soldier from Sakju was an immigrant who had suffered from tyranny. The second type of wandering is the wandering of the captive. Ogyeong, who was captured and brought to Japan, only avoided harsh suffering because she was under a kind owner. She settled in Hangju, Ming after meeting Choi Cheok in Vietnam. Choi Cheok was captured in the Simha battle, but later returned with the help of a Hu-geum soldier. The third type of wandering is the wandering of the fugitive. Jo Wui-han described another type of family separation in the episode of the wandering, separation and reuniting of the Ming soldier, Jin Wui-kyoeng, and his daughter. In the reality of a time in which there were numerous vagrants, each scarred in their own way, whether physically or emotionally, the theme of 'wandering' exposes the scars of many people that were caused by the war and shares their pain, including the pain of Jo Wui-han himself.

From a historical perspective, Deungju in Shandong, China has significance in terms of the diplomatic relationship between China and Korea. In this paper, the meaning of Deungju from the perspective of the literary geography is discussed by analyzing descriptions of Deungju in various literary works, including poems based on travel logs at the end of Gorye dynasty, Jocheon Voyage Log by Hong Ik-han, and Gim Yeong-cheol Jeon. Deungju was depicted as a stop over connecting the land and the sea route in the course of travel to and from China at the end of Goryeo dynasty and the early Joseon dynasty. A lodging house at Deungju Station and Bongrae station, Bongraegak, and Bojeongsa are the representative examples shown in the envoy travel literature. Gwon Geon and Jeong Mong-ju used the place as material for their literary works. A 30day literary log was recorded in the Jocheon Voyage Log by Hong Ik-han(1625). Here, detailed descriptions of the landscape and traditions of Deungju and the places visited by the envoys as they successfully performed their mission were also included. Deungju in Gim Yeong-cheol Jeon was described as a city where love, happiness and the pain of separation between Gim Yeong-cheol and Lady Jeon were shared. It is expected that the depictions of Deungju in Korean literary works could serve as a significant historical record, and strengthen the ties between China and Korea.
